Survive This! - Part 1 Winners

Archive: 36 posts

I am dead tired right now (I think I may be sick), so I'll do the full writeup tomorrow, but here's a list (in no particular order) of the winners of Part 1. Now, this was an incredibly difficult decision, and I in no way want to negate the value of the levels that were not picked. We had a list of 10-15 levels that we were fighting over, and all of the judges had to make compromises in order to agree on this final list. Congrats to everyone who participated, you all went above and beyond what we expected (and we expected amazing things). To the creators of the levels below: expect a PM from me.
Level Title:Sack'a'light
Creator's PSN:oooDORIENooo
Short Descriptionut out the red lights before they go boom. You do this with your white light beam that follows sackboys movements. Can you make it to the top SPEED 9 ??????
I didn't explain this too well when you start the level and a few people where unaware what to do.
Basically there is 9 black lights in a 3x3 grid (3 in each layer - front, middle and back) These lights start to light up red and if one stays lighted for more then a set time you explode and die. To put these red lights out before they kill you, there are (directly above the lights where sackboy is) 9 buttons in exactly the same 3x3 grid. When you step on a button a white beam of light shines down from bellow it to the corresponding red light. This puts the red light out and it goes back to black.
The rate that they light up red increases. You start off at speed 1 and it gets faster and faster till the top speed of 9.
I think it could be quite addictive if you get used to hopping in and out of the screen and left and right.
I've made it to speed 9 a few times when I was play testing it so I'm sure some of the hard core players on here could get there too
Level Title: [MmSC] Jungle Jumps ~ Survival Challenge
Creator's PSN: cRueLm0nsTeR
Short Description : [MmSC - Survival Challenge] Try to stay as long as you can on the platform and collect points. But be careful: The monkeys don't like you ...!
Pictures/Video :

Level Title: Rocket Hurdles : Electric Dusk
Creator's PSN: Lokno
Short Description (optional): A survival challenge where the objective is to avoid electrified hurdles rocketing toward you. These hurdles span all three layers, and there are 1-2 two holes in them which you must jump or shift toward to clear each.
Now, get practicing! We'll officially begin Part 2 tomorrow.

Thanks for whoever voted for me guys, it must of been a really hard decision as there were a lot of GREAT entries.

If anyone fancies getting some practice before it starts proper then my level is still published. So head over to my level and try it out. Any comments and plays/hearts are welcome so I get some recognition as well
But only heart if you like as I only like to get hearts the legit way

Well done, everyone! I'm happy to have been part of part 1, I'll probably play the winning levels a couple of times in part 2 as well, just to get a feel of how fierce the competition is. 2009-03-05 20:34:00

It was definitely a tough call getting to those three. I remember discussing with CC about the initial competition idea, and we were initially thinking three winners for stage 1, but were fearing a poor response from people and might have gone with just one winner for the first stage.

I'm glad we went with 3. We could have easily have done 5 or 7 without too much trouble, judging from our short list and the quality of the enteries recieved.

Congratulations to all the people who won part 1 and to all those who took part! Even though you might not have being one of the top 3, let me say that every entry was great. If people want a playlist that will keep them very busy and entertained for a few hours, you can't go wrong playing through the whole list of those who entered.

Contrary to what I said above, Part 2 will commence once we hear back from all of the Creators. There's still one person who hasn't responded yet, but we expect him to let us know soon. Until then you can use the extra time to practice for Part 2. 2009-03-06 02:09:00

Well, when there's 37 other competitors and we are only choosing 3 levels, the competition can get pretty fierce. I have to say, 95% of the levels that were submitted had some quality about them that absolutely amazed me. However, it also had to be fun, quickly accessible, highly replayable, and able to stand up against tons of players playing it repeatedly without anyone discovering unexpected workarounds. Many of the levels actually met all of these qualifications, which is what made the final decision-making process so difficult.

Just a quick update:

The creator of Rocket Hurdles has yet to get back to us. I've contacted him via PM, PSN, and email, so if he doesn't respond in one more day, we'll pick a different winner. Sorry again for the delay!

Let's hope he doesn't respond! Lol, that may be a bit harsh, but I wanna another winner that has not been selected by MM for their contest.

It's not an easy question to answer. Each judge took a different approach in terms of what they were looking for, and we were focusing on an initial top 5 and then a top 3. It's not like we have all 36 levels organised from 1 to 36. Some judges might have taken that approach, but I know I personally did not. I went through and tried to get the levels that appealled to me, and then narrowed that list to a smaller and smaller number, getting to the point where I was down to the top 5 for the first round of judging.

From my own notes I can see that your level did not get onto my short list, but half of the levels fit that category. It felt too fiddly to me, and we really looking for the best levels we could find.

I hope that helps, but I cannot speak for the other judges for their opinion of your level.

Now, I have nothing against the winners, but I would like to know why these levels won, so I can see were to improve my level, and future levels. This would be really helpful!

Thanks!

Well, as I alluded to before, we were asked to look at as many of the levels as we could, and then come back with our top 5. We then whittled the list down to a personal top 3, and people commented on some of the different choices made. From those lists we came up with the final 3 winners.

Each of us had different criteria we were looking for though. Although it was not set in stone, we all have our own opinions and values on what makes a good level. What we were looking for overall was something that was bug free, easy but challenging to get scores on, and replayable with the aim of being able to improve your score.

The final winners were not entirely unannimous amongst the judges, however. We all had levels that we liked or did not like. It's just there were so many good ones that met the overall requirements, that we had to compromise and come to the final list we have today.

If we had known we would have gotten so many good enteries, we might have opened the field up for round 1 to have more winners. But when we were initially planning the event, we were not sure if were even going to get one good one. Ah well, what's done is done.

I hope that helps answer the questions. If you can come up with a level that met with the criteria mentioned, rest assured then you have a good level in and of itself. All of the judges have their own levels that they found great and will return to that were not the final 3, and this means that anyone can go through the entry list and also find such buried treasures.

To add to what Elbee said my top three picks didn't even make it to the final three that's how close it was and how many good levels there were.
