Animated Book Tutorial

Archive: 4 posts

Hi friends,

in my cancelled LBP2 project "Do you fear Death?!", which had been planned as a hybrid between music gallery level and a "Pirates of the Caribbean" themed movie level, I had an animated sequence of the "Pirate's Codec", in which one could find the controls of the level. In this sequence the book opens and closes again:

https://youtu.be/Ae7suec3vs8

And for those, who are interested, I've done a little tutorial!
So lets begin!

Ingredients:

1x cube made of sticker panel material
1x small round thin disc made of sticker panel material 2x "open book"- object from the objects bag (one of it mirrored with R3)
1x thin cuboid, two layers deep (for the book title)
1x thin cuboid, two layers deep (for the tabletop, wooden material)
4x thin background made of bookshelf material (you can probably find it in the wood category)
1x spring bolt
2x microchip
2x fog machine
1x impact sensor
2x rotator
1x timer
1x selector
3x on-/off-switch
wires, glue, letter-stickers, text-stickers

Recipe:

First compose all ingredients for the book:

Then glue the little round disc (layer 2) with the front page part of the book at its bottom left corner (as the book is 2 layers deep the little disc is located at the middle of the book):

http://ie.lbp.me/img/ft/22ed38cc644417df5bee7a022473736cec6d1b52.jpg

After that glue the sticker panel cube (one layer deep and located in layer 3) with the tabletop, exactly on that place where the book should open. And then place the front page part of the book above its back page part so that you get a closed book. Next put the round disc and the sticker panel cube together using a spring bolt. (check carefully whether the front page part of the book is still movable!)

http://ie.lbp.me/img/ft/78e685b0723dd0dccb0107d5d3d2f133742fec97.jpg

Ok! Thats been the first steps, now you have to deal with some logic!

To get the front page part of the book opened, you have to let the round disc, which you have glued with it, rotate to the left direction (rotator2 on the microchip moving the disc anti-clockwise), to get the front page part of the book closed again you have to let the round disc rotate to the right direction (rotator1 on the microchip moving the disc clock-wise)
To switch between opening and closing the book you can use a selector! Wire the outlet1 with the rotator1 and the outlet2 with the rotator2! And wire the outlet2 additionally with the input1.
The trigger of the animation has to be wired with the input2 of the selector!

http://i7.lbp.me/img/ft/63739643dc798b423f2d110caa69314c2c97c728.jpg

For the rotators I used following settings:
*Rotator1: deceleration: 0%/ acceleration: 100%/ speed: 80/ action: on/ off
*Rotator2: deceleration: 0%/ acceleration: 100%/ speed: -60/ action: on/ off

If you put a signal on the input2 of the selector then the output2 will be activated and also the rotator2 with the effect that the front page part of the book rotates to the left and the book opens. If the signal will be deactivated again, then the output1 of the selector will be activated and also the rotator1! And so the front page part of the book will rotate to the right again and the book closes. Voila!

Now its time for some additional effects!

When the book opens I wanted it to blow up some dust!
For this effect place two fog machines where the opend front page touches the tabletop!

http://ic.lbp.me/img/ft/b8cf95eb0e30049d9436383134d9231c2b474d18.jpg

To trigger the dust whirl you can use an impact sensor placed on the front page! If the front page touches the tabletop, the impact sensor will be activated! To let the dust be blown up only a limited time, wire the impact sensor with a timer and the timer with the fog machines!

http://ib.lbp.me/img/ft/dcb8b8dbb1f421e3f0baffa81ae7f5aa3146d396.jpg

http://i5.lbp.me/img/ft/1c5a3185eea347ba0a893566fb99fefcaf78d3af.jpg

As an additional effect you probably want to see the title of the book clearly on its front page when the book is closed.

http://i9.lbp.me/img/ft/87911bced095dece424a4356664c8118f0521acf.jpg

for this effect write the title of the book on a cuboid sticker panel material (two layers deep and as broad as the front page) and place it upon the book's front page in that way that the letters of the title are just visible on it. Then you can adjust the color and the brightness of the title in the way you prefer it! Finally glue the sticker panel material with the title to the front page of the book! To avoid that parts of the title can be seen when the book is opened you can add a simple on/off switch triggered by the impact sensor.

In the initial state (book closed) the switch for the title is "on" and the switch for the timer reset is "off". When the book opens the impact sensor will be activated and the switches will go into reverse (title "off" and timer reset "on")

http://ic.lbp.me/img/ft/d0cf76c84a588f1580d0408ba8353615fb77dcf3.jpg

in the picture the element at the bottom on the right is redundant!

When the impact sensor is activated the title is switched off and the timer, which activates the fog machines, gets a reset. If the book closes, the title appears again!
Alternatively you could use a marker and a marker sensor to control the title.

After the animation had been created and tested, the only things left to do have been some fine tuning and some garnish. I've ornamented the book pages with a text sticker and a pirate's flag sticker. Finally I've added the background made of bookshelf material and the skulls with the candle lights on them. Thats been all! Super simple, isn't it?

I hope that I could entertain you with my animated book tutorial and maybe its an inspiration for you to do some own book animations!

Maybe that there are some smarter logic solutions, but this one does function, so I'm content with it!

Many greetings, Jürgen^^

It looks great!

Just one thing... the book in the beginning of SACKBOY and The Seed of Destruction looks almost identical to this. Did you do it?
It's highly suspect...

Hi DiamondDiancie,

I don't know "Sackboy and the Seed of Destruction", but I will search for it! I've done this book animation more than a year ago, working on my "Do you fear Death?!" level! I've already published a German version of this tutorial in German LBPC in July 2014 and I published it also in my "Do you fear Death?!" trailer on youtube also in July 2014.

Ok, now I've seen a video of "Sackboy and the Seed of Destruction" and it's beginning scene with the opening book, and I think that its totally different to my solution,...ok, the book is on a wooden table, but thats what books often do,...and there are some books in the background, but thats also an obvious arrangement!...ok, the book also opens, but in a different way and opening its pages is finally a necessary action if you want to show its content. ...ok, there is a candle with a flame, but no skulls! ... And no dust, when opening! ...and...and...and...

And if I should have inspired SAMURAI-09 then I would be the happiest man on earth! But I'm afraid that thats been pure coincidence!

But let me tell you a funny story! When I had the first idea to do an underwater music level, I created an underwater scenery with a sunken wreck, corals and mussles, a treasure chest and so on! And when I had nearly finished it, Kevin-4244 published a music gallery with nearly the same scenery! Pure coincidence! He did a fantastic music gallery indeed,... but I couldn't publish a nearly identical scenery! So I had to change the whole concept and thats been the origin of my "Do you fear Death?!" project.

Omg! I tend to chatter, I hope that you are lenient with that!

Have a fine weekend and many greetings, Jürgen^^
