Make a tornado

Archive: 8 posts

Simple enough idea... hard to actually do - this derived from my nature tech demo, which turned into a second level called Disaster beta. Disaster Beta, by LuckyShot has a tornado - it's ok.

I just want to see if someone can make anything that looks like it's spinning, like a barber shop candy stripe thing - or if you're really good, a tornado! Any takers?

i wont take it lol you could have some gas effect in bg to make it look like theres a flow of rubble and dust.2009-03-04 22:58:00

My current build of a tornado has black rubble emitted down a spiral outline of a tordado, with black gas all around it to look like it's flowing... becuase I had the exact same first thought on how to make it!

I then added a rocket for the ground debris effect and a strobe light to make it look like the lightening in the forground is bouncing of the internals of the tornado... still looks a bit cheesy though without some sort of rotation effect.

hmm if you had BG gas then you could have a high power mini fan to push it around and have leave decor attached to small bits of sponge emmited left to right2009-03-04 23:14:00

Maybe you could create the illusion of rotation by using a striped pattern on the tornado. Have the stripes at a diagonal slant, and have a really fast piston making it go up and down... Maybe if you get the right intervals, you could get this spiraling optical illusion but it all sounds very iffy.....2009-03-04 23:38:00

Elaborating on Pitcard's idea...

Candy stripe two thin layers of glass. Horizontally flip one of them so that the stripes go in the opposite orientation. Place this one in the layer behind the first. Use some fancy piston effects and maybe, just maybe, this will look real.

The alternate approach is to use lots of debris in a bunch of emitters doing the same idea.... shooting diagonally towards the ground, then a layer behind it doing the mirror image diagonal.

Pulling this off is going to take some serious skill and innovation. Essentially what you're trying to do is create the illusion of debris plane shifting, which is fundamentally against the creation mechanics.

Ok, I played the Nature demo and the Disaster one and I'm seriously impressed.

The tornado's lookin really smooth, maybe it'd be more catastrophic on a bigger scale!

The lava flow is brilliant, you could add cracks in the volcano revealing some more lava effects behind, probably wouldn't take much thermometer if you just fix it to a piston.
Its a pity the lava takes up so much processing already...

Your nature level is just beautiful. Everything is really atmospheric and captures the nature perfectly. You could screw around with those beams through the woods, maybe have them change angle slightly as you walk through, or change intensity. The lightening is really "striking"... excuse me....

I think the snow effect you made doesn't really work with that scene too well. But looking at it, it'd work great for snow landing on a window or on a big object cause of the way it suddenly slows and dissolves. Looks just like its landing and melting.

Lookin forward to seeing a full level with these effects!

or u could simplify the whole idea a bit

use a big rocket booster, set it to on and have it move along the ground ( or under the ground, but hidden cleverly by a thin layer stickered to look like dust or debris ^_^
