Custom Music Generator - some photos up!

Archive: 20 posts

I'm working on a slightly complex idea which I'll probably make into a level.

This is where it gets complicated so if you not arsed reading, just skip to the underlined bit at the end!!

My set up is:
- a set of pistons going horizontally with mag-keys on the ends
- these pistons are set to snap back to the beginning when they reach the max length
- then I can put a musical pattern in with mag-switches, so it plays in a LOOP
- I've made several different musical loops to feed in, all in the same key

What I'm planning to make:
- I'm gonna have it so their is a grab switch for spawning each loop, one grab switch per loop
- Also each loop pattern is made of dissolve material
- When you spawn the first loop it keeps playing, until you grab another switch. This'll dissolve the first one as soon as it gets to the end and spawn the second loop while keeping to the rhythm of the song!

So basically what I'm making is a song, broken up into loops, which the player can re-arrange to their own preference as the song is playing! For example, they could let the first loop play for 4 times, then decide to trigger the 3rd loop once, then go to the second etc.

I'm just seeing if anyone actually sees what I'm getting at, and if there's any interest at all. I'll still make it though, cause its good fun composing lbp music:hero:

Also when I'm finally done, I might make a copyable user friendly version, so maybe people could use it or create some of their own music... without resorting to the old sponge push-a-long trick

Will upload images sometime soon, cause I'd say its hard to visualize >_>

The music I've made so far, I'm pretty happy with, kinda funky gaming style beats with chug-along bass and intertwining synth melodies.

Also I've been thinking about the interface, I'm thinkin a massive OVEN. Sackboy's on top with all the controls ie the grab buttons, and the beats are seen spawning behind the glass window in the oven door. Bakin up some toasty beats in the kitchen!

Actually just thinking now.... I could have a bunch of realtime appliances that sackboy can use to trigger noises to add to the music!! Hehe like a toaster that makes a PING when it pops.2009-03-04 22:55:00

OK, I've done the first 4 loops of the song.

Heres the most basic mechanic behind the music
These pistons each have a mag-key on the end. They are set to flick back to the beginning.

First Loop

Second Loop

Third Loop

Fourth Loop

The Purple mag-switch here dissolve the loop its connected to. Each loops got one of these.

I just place each loop next to the darkmatter block, and pistons just play it. All I have to do is have an emitter mechanism that spawns the loops in place, and a dissolver mechanism that gets rid of the last one playing.

Sure Zommy. Seems like your the only one interested, but I'm gonna try make it as fun as possible to screw around with.

If all the loop triggering falls through, I can always just stick each one together and make it into a long song with a car playing it! Lazy-mans style. But i'm pretty sure my design will work.

well i hope it does because im very intrested in music levels and more interested in music levels where i can mess around rather then pushing a ugly box. although leather monkeys stairway was quite epic xD
this should work perfectly and im sure others will be more interested when you publish it

Ahh I'm presuming by Stairway you mean, he's the one who did Stairway to Heaven?
Think I played it, was epic alright. Love the Zeppelin.

Ye plus its a great place just to jot down ideas. I think I could also have a switch you can adjust the speed with too.. but I dunno if that'll be necessary really.

Great idea!

I was trying to make a song that looped and progressively got more complex the same but just using the sound of the materials themselves clashing-such as glass or rubber.

I'm not too good at making music levels though and it didn't sound that good in the end

Your idea looks to work well though and could make a great different song in-game.

I'll keep my eye on this one...

Ye I bet you could make some different noises just from the actual materials coliding, I'll consider this while making this level, cheers Nintendoholic.

Oh ye, if any of you guys want a sample of the basic loop idea, I have 2 experimental levels I made when I first got the game

You get my sample loop as a prize too...

I'm just building the Big Oven right now, also made the mechanism that triggers the loops to dissolve only at the end of the bar.

I'm gonna be adding a few Kitchen Appliances and other stuff that belongs in a kitchen. All this stuff will be interactive and make noises that sackboy can add to the music. So fire away if you guys think of anything I could put in.

That's a cool idea! Sort of like a sequencer for LBP. Maybe you should have the player change individual tracks. Like, for percussion he could switch between Drips in the Sink, Lid on the Boil, Chopping Knife, and for melody there's Boiling Kettle, Microwave and Blender...

And it seems more compact that the usual music level. Would this work for writing your own music for a regular level? Or is it very thermo-heavy?

I was thinking about being able to choose from different beats, then different melodies, and different bass. This way it'd be really customizable, but it'd make everything just a bit too cluttered and complicated for my liking.

I do like the way you associated the loops themselves with the kitchen, that'd be kinda sweet, but I don't want the sackboy having to jump around too much for the parts of the song themselves. I have it so the 5 grab switches for the 5 parts are all on top of the Oven. Then I'm gonna expand the kitchen and have some interaction with the stuff in it. Basically, it'll give the players freedom to have maybe someone triggering the song parts, and other players exploring the other objects.

Yep its really nice and compact cause the emitters have the loops all stored up. I've done the 5 loops and have some emitter based triggers for the mechanics, and so far its only about 1/5th full.

It's kinda tricky to hook up though, but if you want the song to flow 1 loop after another, I'd say theres a very simple way.

The great thing is, when you've made a loop, you can just shrink it down to a bitesize block! You could just have these hidden on screen in certain areas of your level for you own custom music!

Very cool, I'm currently working on making my own custom, continuous music to put in my levels as well. if you want, add me on your PSN and i'll playtest and give you feedback. this kind of stuff is really cool to see.2009-03-07 15:02:00

Cheers! I'll add you then, I have a couple of music tests published a good while ago, you can try them out. And I'll have to give your levels a shot.

Ye I'd really like to see a music themed expansion. The instrument range isn't great, especially for sustained instruments... you've only got the one synth, and its really impossible to have sustained notes in a loop. You'd have to do them separately

I agree, the range on the piano/bass guitar, or really anything, as far as note-wise isnt great. theres a number of songs i can't do that i want to, because of the range limitation. well, we can hope that MM will work that out for us!2009-03-08 01:15:00

This is turning into more of an Ongoing Project than just an idea to be honest.

Since I don't have the power to move my thread, I'm just gonna leave this one here... as an Idea. Cause I think anyone can add to this if they want, and they can go right ahead and use any of the basic mechanics I've used!!

I'm gonna start a proper Project thread right away. Basically same level, just more centered around getting through the level as a work in progress.

I'll post some Pics of the Oven, which is actually shaping up pretty well! Thanks to anyone who is interested so far, i'll edit this with link to new thread incase you're willing to contribute

Here it is! (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=9553)
