Sticker Costumes-Are they too hard?

Archive: 21 posts

I'm sure all of us have went on to steve-big-guns' level and had a go at that cool Altair/Darth Maul/Helghast etc. sticker costume.

You stick on the first sticker. It LOOKS fine

You stick on the second. It doesn't look exactly how it's supposed to. But it'll do.

You stick on the third. Is way off and give up. You can't be bothered getting that pinpoint precision needed. Sure the tutorials might help. But who could be bothered.

So I ask you this. Are sticker costumes worth it?

You might as well ask if creating levels is too hard. The challenge brings satisfaction.2009-03-04 20:48:00

Woah these replies were quick. I'm actually suprised!

I suppose you're right but Level creating is quite simple. I don't want to sound boastful or anything but i find it easy.

There should be a mode to properly customise Sackboy. Right now it's not worth it for me. I won't go 3 hours at making something that could have taken 10 mins if the game was properly designed.

Half the fun in create mode is making something work in a roundabout way... I think making a cool costume with such limited means and making sackboy look a way he was never intended to, is the same kind of ghetto programming spirit lol

Early on when LBP came out, we didn't even know you could customize sackboy that much by using stickers and decos - the first time you saw someone with a giant ear on their head you were like "WHAT LEVEL DO I GET THE EAR IN?!" lol. Even if you could select costume pieces and use a color sliding scale for tone, shade and color - it wouldn't feel as ingeniously put together.

It's just a superfluous feature - changing costume pieces is handled pretty intuitively and gives alot of possibilities, for a game that's not an RPG center on equipment and avatar creation, or a basic fighting game with alot of room to fit a create-a-character mode in that lets you adjust color and anatomy scale. I wouldn't mind having the freedom of something like Soul Calibur 4 though

I understand but since you want people to put stickers and decorations on their Sackboys, why not make so it's user friendly? Their costume system is already so cool and let's not talk about the quite infinite awesomeness of the creation mode.
Anyways, I totally understand people having fun making those custom costume but personally I can't help it but to think I would need some user friendlyness there. At least make so the Sackboy animations are paused and let me turn him. Would have been so easy to do...

The biggest difficulty in stickering yourself is the fact that your sack person is constantly bobbing up and down happily. I've noticed that if you change his/her face to one of the angry expressions they will stop bobbing around as much so it's easier to apply your stickers.

Hope this helps.

I never even use "sticker costumes". I do have my own custom sack characters though. I do sometimes put 1 sticker on a costume, but never make a costume pretty much made out of stickers. I tried to make a "sticker costume" once, but I gave up almost straight away. I would say they are too hard to make, one of the big reasons is that your sack's body is constantly moving up and down.2009-03-10 19:52:00

almost all my costumes are a basic sackboy cyclopes. i use basic color stickers to customize mine. my favorite one i made is my 'demon' one with black skin (black sticker), a red eye, red mouth, and a red zipper (with red stickers). i wouldn't think about making a near exact copy of a heighast or master chief or any other game/movie/tv character. way to complicated for me2009-03-11 02:39:00

If I make a sticker costume, I always go in Create Mode, that way I can rewind any mistakes. It makes it a lot easier, although your Sackboy still moves.2009-03-11 11:50:00

I use the scared emotion for steadying my sackboy. Works great except for the legs, they wobble all over the place.2009-03-11 12:31:00

I love making sticker costumes, it gives you better creative freedom than with the ordinary costumes, so you can make costumes from other games and media without having to wait for a costume pack, like this pretty cool Martian Manhunter costume I made once.

Incidentally, is there a thread sticky or something for costume showcasing on this site?

Instead of worrying about how to apply stickers, why doesn't MM just let us share costumes?2009-03-20 03:31:00

Hah, making costumes is like making levels, at first it might seem complex and difficult, but as you keep making them it becomes faster and easier since the more you do them tthe better you know where the costume/sticker/decorations are and are faster to get, you know what sticker convinations make what and how to make them.
Don't worry, at first, it takes about 30mins+ to make a decent looking custom costume, but as you gett better at it you can finish a good one in a matter of a couple of minutes.

Well it is about to get a whole lot easier by the looks of it. With the new cornish yarg update making it possible to turn your sackboy 360 degrees to customise him easier 2009-03-27 01:09:00
