What I've been up to while LBPC was down

Archive: 12 posts

I used to be a pretty avid photographer. But since the dawn of digital I have been relegated to simple little point and shooters, as my budget couldn't handle the expense of a DSLR. Well, I sprang for one at Christmas (the lowly but still awesome Nikon D3300), and have been buying up gear (lenses, lighting equipment, gadgets) with almost every paycheck since.

So I thought I'd share a few of my images with the LBPC faithful - my favorite group of creative folks on the interwebs.

The two skyline shots are the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, in Minnesota.

EDIT: I edited the post to give caption/descriptions, rather than file names under the images.

Thanks!!

Nice work Danny!

I think the first one could use just a bit of cropping and post processing. I like the slow shutter speed for the creamy water, but something about the crop and maybe adding more contrast.. maybe even the lights a touch darker? I dunno...

Oh, I know... "if" you got another chance... I would say much smaller depth of field. Too much is in focus that disturbs the eye and crop to avoid the lumber stuff in the upper left corner or make it darker and totally out of focus. That might require you a better lens... but as I have Nikon and quite a few tasty ones... I guess I can visit and let you borrow one. lol

The rest are really good. Maybe some small niggles here and there, but really nice work.

Wow, really awesome photography.
I would like to be a photographer as well, but there aren't much good scenery in where I live.

Holy mother of photos .-. this is beautiful! I know barely nothing of professional photography but this for sure looks like much more than a hobby thing, you really have some talent! Thank you so much for sharing, this really got me inspired. Not sure for what, but I'll eventually find out

Oh, nice to see you visited Mexico *inserts mariachi toggle smiley*

Oh... one more thing. lol

You probably are wondering "Well dang jw... How can I have a long shutter speed for a silky waterfall and have a large fstop for a smaller DoF?"

I am sooo glad you asked. lol There are these handy things called neutral density filters, or even a circular polarizer will knock a few stops off your exposure. I have an NDx2 and a NDx4 which can come in very handy for just this sort of thing. They also make graduated ND filters to help darken a sky (ie backlighting) to allow a darker foreground, but I tend to opt for post processing in Lightroom or take two shots, one for the sky and one for the scenary and combine them a bit... (via a tripod obviously) sort of like a toned down HDR effect.

And also... ANY questions at all in your shooting. Please feel free to ask.

Not sure if you have ever seen my site or not. Mostly race cars, but the slide show at the main page is worth a look. A few of those shots were magazine covers... so at least someone thought they were good. lol

Actually, it was shot with an ND filter and a polarizer on. I have a variable ND filter (ranges from ND3 to ND400). I don't have any graduated filters (all threaded circular filters). As for the deeper DoF, it was partly by conscious choice. While I agree that It's a good idea to try to blend out the distracting branches, I wanted the water in front and the forest behind to be in clear focus. But I was also using my wide angle (11-16mm) lens, so a shallow DoF is difficult to impossible. And that side of the falls is a challenge because of those branches. I almost wish the state parks people would come in and clean them up a bit (but that's not how they operate and I guess that's a good thing - could become a slippery slope, y'know?). Here are the other shots from this set, most of them from the other (more accessible) side of the falls:

This one in particular you can see the deadfall that I had to shoot through from the right side:

Your site looks great! Thanks for sharing.

Ahhh understand... . Those are the challenges of shots for sure.

To be honest.. I don't like graduated filters. As I said, I can do the same thing with a few shots or using the graduated tool in Lightroom.

Keep up the awesome work!! ...and glad you liked my site.

My younger brother has a Nikon D3300. I'm not much of a photographer beyond having a natural eye for art, but he's got tons of awesome pictures. Great job with these, they look very professional.2015-08-19 01:51:00
