The classic 'sidekick'

Archive: 5 posts

Hi everyone. As you've probably noticed i'm new to the lbpcentral forums but have been trying to create for a while.

My first level publised was under the name LocoRoco ver 2 and you can guess what that was about. Still on a 4 star rating though.

Anyway, down to business. I'm making a contrasting colour/art themed level as many as there already are around but am wanting a 'sidekick' to follow and help you through parts of the level.

I've decided on a weasel/ferret type animal and it has 5 small seperate coulored metal blocks as its body segments. The thing i need to get around is letting it walk follow (with a body that can crawl over small hills) and be able to hold the blocks until needed for a certain puzzle.

< [] [] [] [] [] O> head = O> tail =< body segments = []. Sorry no pictures yet

Any ideas as it seems too heavy to move with just normal wheels/legs at the moment?

Thanks, I'll try and update when i can.

Legs typically perform poorly. They don't work well on fabric (sponge) materials, and often you need to play with their settings to get movement (for whatever reason, it might not walk on speed 1, but will on 1.5 and more...)

Wheels should have no trouble moving things unless they are losing grip. You can combat this by making your sidekick out of lighter material (stone and metal are heaviest; you can always take a picture of metal and sticker a lighter material to look like it!)

If wheels aren't turning, then the problem is more likely that your brain isn't properly connected to your critter. brains should be the last thing you add, and if you make any changes to your critter, I suggest removing and replacing the brain with a new one when done. They tend to be buggy...

Sounds pretty slick. Maybe you could have the segments of his body as rollers, so he just rolls along, with Thin layer bits connecting the segments. Might be hard to program his movement though. Plus ferrets are the ultimate problem solvers.2009-03-04 23:01:00

Thanks, Ill try both of those methods-basically i want these 5 segments (all colour coded) to be able to be picked up/seperated from the ferret (I've decided to name Flaire) for a sort of puzzle part-way through the level. The ferret will follow you underground tough most of the level if possible than surface when needed for puzzles.

The whole level will be puzzle/platform and secret area filled.

Thanks for the tips again!

If you could draw a picture in MSPaint or take a photo of what you have already it would help because I'm having trouble visualising what you want to do.2009-03-13 22:42:00
