Platforming tips!

Archive: 4 posts

Hey guys! As a creator, over time I've learned more about how to make platformers. And now I'll be presenting some tips! I know a lot of people out there are logicionists so you'll learn a lot here!

Tip 1: Using Grid and Corner editor - This is an important one. When you want to create precise designs, grid is the best way to do it. You simply move the analogue stick and the game will create accurate designs. As for corner editing, thats could for changing the shape of the design to just the way you want it.

Tip 2: Drawing level design - This is an important one. Draw out your entire level. After failing at creating levels so many times, I've finally realized how important planning levels can be. You can't just expect to start with something and go with the flow. You have to have you entire level planned out.

Tip 3: Having a background - Backgrounds are very important. You don't want a blank background because thats bland and uninteresting. Like tip 2, plan and design your back ground, and then create it.

Tip 4: Getting inspired by real world objects or ideas - I was once thinking about how to design a plane. I looked it up and bam! A good design for me to use in my level showed up. Sometimes when you run out of ideas, get inspired by objects, ideas, landscapes, etc.

Tip 5: Using the option of "Order by Color" - This is another big one. When you select a category, go on the "order by color selection". This is really good because it allows you to quickly find just the right object or material you want to use in your level. For example, if your building a snow level, and can't find the right material, try selecting this option. All you have to do is look for the white materials and there's your snow material! You can also use this option for stickers and decorations, which is also really helpful.

Tip 6: Placing your level away from level boundaries- You want your level away from these areas so that it's not easy for players to get a glance at them.

Tip 7: Starting off with a basic, cardboard layout - Sometimes you don't want to focus too much on the decoration of your level. You just want to create your level first. Well that's easy! All you have to do is select cardboard or another basic material. That way you can create the design of your level first, and decorate it later.

Tip 8: Having a theme - You should have an idea of what your level is going to be about before you make it.

Tip 9: Having fixed camera angles - This is pretty important. What you want to do is place a small piece of hologram/sticker panel, and then put a game camera on it. Adjust the camera to just the right angle, and voila! You can place the camera in certain areas of your level to have a better camera view.

Tip 10: Using the static option for objects - This is just a small tip, but it's pretty useful. Try to select static on objects and materials that you want to stay firm in 1 spot. That way you don't have to worry about the laws of physics lol.

Well those are my tips! Hope you learned something about platforming!

Static was a great new feature introduced in LBPV, I use it all the time, before you had to screw around with glueing stuff, and it wasnt fun.2015-03-02 03:36:00

I hear ya. I have more interesting platformers that suffer from lack of planning collecting dust on my moon than the amount of levels I have published.

In fact, I still forget this step, and sometimes I wish I didn't because I lost my creative edge later on.
