The Final Fantasy Thread

Archive: 26 posts

Love it or hate it, we all know Final Fantasy.

I love it, and continue to love it daily. Favorite was 7 and tactics. I've yet to get into a FF storyline like I did FF7. 9 is definitly a close second.

Love it? Whats your Fave?

Hate it? Why?

Actually Zommy, there's not a generic Final Fantasy thread - I just did a search and looked through 5 pages of results because I couldn't remember seeing one. There is only a FFXIII thread... so I think you're being a little hard on our new member here.

Anyways, back on topic. I love it, all of it. I'm sure many would call me a blind fanboy, but I've played nearly all of them, many of them repeatedly. The style of 7 through X-2 to me is as good as RPG games get. Something about the transfer of 3D combined with the classic ATB is the perfect experience. And while I've played the older 2D ones, they lack that visual immersion factor that makes you feel like you're IN fantasy land while playing. Also, while many hated XII due to the lack of story and gambit-based gameplay, I loved this one because of its ability to bring me back to my [good experiences] with XI Online.

Few can match the mood and depth of the story of 7, but 9 comes close and I really enjoyed the anime-style characters. While 8 was memorable, it felt oddly sterile and too serious. I didn't care for the linearity of X much, and for this reason I still prefer X-2 over it. If they ever bring back a proper overworld map screen I think I'd die of happiness!

There's plenty to criticize, especially when you consider that every one seems to capture the same personalities for the protagonist and antagonist. There's a lot of recycling in terms of theme, plot cycle etc., but I never found any of this to really detract from the core experience.

I've played many other RPGs, but few capture the magic I feel when I play the FF series. I have a really hard time warming up to other ones, usually because they feel too "for kids" in their presentation, or the battle systems are clunky... In the end, they just don't have that same old comfortable feeling.

Ah, I think I have found a friend.

I've loved final fantasies.. been playing final fantasy and zelda since before i could read... and you could understand my dilema playing before i could read lol....

I really enjoyed the 2d FFs at the time.. meaning pre ff7. Loved em' played em though multiple times, but found myself coming back to ff3(6) the most.

Once 7 came out it was lights out and I played it through nonstop until 8 came out (being under 16 you play what yo uget for christmas/bday all year)
But when 8 came out i felt alienated, due to my young age possibly, but it was as you said, too serious a story line. Also very, very confusing for a pre-teen. Not to mention Draw stock magic is FAIL!

9 held my attention in the story line and in the side quests especially (love catching them frogs, and i cant ever get enough of the chocobo hot/cold game, love the western-ish theme) but I didn't feel connected to the zidane/garnet love story like i did the cloud/tifa/aeris (and yuffie/barret if you play right!) as well as I did not enjoy Kuja as the femmie anti-life person he plays. I know its cliche but i enjoy my bad guys badass sephiroth esque.

I feel ya on missin the overworld map, i felt they added ALOT more secrets and such with a huge overworld map. My, think of the overworld map possible in ff13, on next gen it could be so simple, but packed with goodness.

FF6

FF7
FF10
FF3
FF1

I won't even bother listing the other ones
Just a free cheap comment though: X2 is like one of the worse game i've ever played

Yeah, but the T&A is pure GOLD.

Plus, I liked the side quests. Beating Angra Mainyu(?) is a blast, as is the cactuar-hunt sidequest. The dressphere system brings me back to good old days of job classes in FF5 and is far more fun than say, oh, the blasted sphere grid.

I've played and own most of them but I have a real soft spot for Final Fantasy IX.
Least favourite...hmm, I'd have to say Final Fantasy X

Final Fantasy 7 was one of the first games I played for PS and I couldn't drop the control once I started playing it. I played 9, didn't get to beat it but got close. Played about 20 hours of X and about 20 mins of XII, which I can't seem to remember where I left. Of the ones I played, 7 was my fav and 9 was pretty good too.2009-03-03 21:22:00

I've been working for years to accumulate perfect saves for all of these.

VIII was fun to do, because you needed to stay at level 1 until near the end of the game, then power level with the best magic junctions

I recently did a IX perfect game, including KOJR, hippaul, and perfect amounts of all the synthed items. I had to write a bloody excel forumla sheet to keep track of item quantities... nuts

XII was a lot of fun to PG as well, mostly because you could play the game without any special circumstances. Beating Yiazmat in a fight that lasted 2 hours was one of the most intense battles I've ever had in a video game... truly epic!

I love almost every part of FF... I couldn't really pick apart favorites, but I have a confession: I only beat one FF game, FFX... in every single one I come really close to the end and then just stop for whatever reason.

I tried FFX-2 and actually like the combat system in it, but there's somethign in it that turns me off...

I've played almost every final fantasy, including one for gameboy that's name escapes me, but like I said, I never completed them. Weird, huh? I really want to beat at leas FF7 and FF8, I still have them for PS.

FFX was a winner for me. Turn-based batle system was really tactical, story was cool, sphere grid was brilliant. And Blitzball.

Also, X-2 was alright. The battle system was cool, you could just string combos of attacks which was fun to do. I think I'm also the only person who enjoyed Sphere Break, too. I beat Shinra in two moves.

I wish they'd stop making the Ivalice Alliance series, though. I think it's the dullest world they've made.

I think I prefer Dragon Quest VIII over the final fantasies though.

I will agree with you on Ivalice. Ivalice is only fun in tactics imo.

I'm a big fan of FF. I have I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, Tactics, X, and XII. My favorite has to be tactics, due to its epic storyline, long length, addictive gameplay, and great soundtrack.2009-03-03 23:35:00

Ah the FF series. One of those series that I wished I loved.

I'm not an RPG gamer. I don't hate them or anything, I actually quite enjoy them when I start them but I lose interest after an hour or two as there are many other games where thrills come quickly and more often. Also exploration is often hindered and in my mind punished by having frequent random battles.

Over the last few years though I've made the concious effort to come around to them. I've owned FF7 for over 10 years tried to play it twice, years apart, couldn't get over my hatred of the combination of random battles and the turn-based battle system and then gave up.

However thanks for CFW I put it on my PSP last year and I'm slowly getting through the first disc. I'm currently at the Temple of the Ancients about 19 hours in (level 35). I've got stuck a few times and had to use a guide (eg. the rolling things in said temple, it just never crossed my mind that the gap was there for a reason) but otherwise I'm kind of enjoying it. I don't play it enough to make quick progress (maybe an hour every few weeks) but I've enjoyed the time I've had with it and it is very memorable.

I guess I'm trying to change because I feel like I should love RPGs. I think that if I had no other games to play I would love them. I love epic music, epic stories, interesting and deep characters and fantasy-style worlds where most of them are based. I pretty much exclusively read fantasy novels. There are tonnes of reasons that I should love them but for some stupid reason I can't stick with them for long. Another oddity is the fact that I've played Oblivion for over 250 hours so that kind of shatters my theory that I have some mild form of ADD.

I own FFVII, VIII, FFIX, FFX, FFXII, FFT:WotL and Crisis Core and have a few others such as VI on my PSP GBA emulator. I've started them all but I've spent longest with VII. The start of IX was very fun, VIII I gave up after a short while, very boring start, VI has a cool start but I haven't played it much yet (definitely planning to though), about 5 hours into CC, barely played XII (I remember going on a small quest into the desert but really didn't like the combat system) and got a few hours into X before getting bored (that boat journey took FAR too long and I gave up soon after). Oh and I beat the first (or one of the first) battle in Tactics. It felt like it took 30 mins. I stopped playing. Awesome cut-scenes though!

Anyway that's my FF story. I'm still fighting my personal JRPG/FF demons and my brain is slowly coming around. I hope there'll come a time where I'll be able to see one through to the end.

Now you're just making up stuff up to get your post count up! I totally caught you!!!

The original FFTactics is fabulous. I tried to play FFTA on a DS emulator and thought it blew.

Never owned a PSP so never saw anything of Crisis Core, but I did absolutely decimate dirge of cerberus. Cool game concept and I enjoyed it, but not one of those games I'll likely ever play again.

I like both of these games but I do think they should stop releasing FFVII-related titles.
I for one don't want them to do the inevitable FFVII remake either....well, not yet at least.

I thought a PS3 remake of ff7 would be alright... if they didnt use voice actors like lance bass.

If you didn't know Sephiroth was voiced by Lance Bass from ?Nysnc? in Kingdom Hearts.

Wow... I've played more FF games than I can count, so I think it'll be simpler listing the games I didn't play.

FFX-2 : I like the battle and job system, but I haven't gotten around to playing it yet. The story doesn't really hook me that much.

FFXI : I don't feel like grinding monsters for 40h/week just to get enough GP to buy a potion. I'm also a strong opponent of pay-for-play. The game looks nice enough though, but I'm not an MMORPG fan.

FFIV DS : I'm dying to play this one, but I have too many other games to finish first. I hate leaving games pending.

FFIII DS : Currently playing it. FFIII has a special place in my heart along with FFV because they were, for a long time, Japanese exclusive games that only diehard FF fans got to experience.

FFTA and FFTA2 : I thoroughly enjoyed Final Fantasy Tactics on the PSP, but I'm not a fan of the sequels.

So yeah, everything else I have played and enjoyed to varying extent. I defeated every optional boss and made sure to get the best weapons in every game. I don't think a Final Fantasy is the end-all of RPGs, but I find they are generally enjoyable in gameplay and story, and have very few annoying features.

I'm highly disappointed in the recent trend of "FFVII bashing" born out of the Compilation of FFVII project. I think it's incredibly childish and ends up reflecting poorly on the whole series and the fans.

I would love for Square-Enix to remake FFVII eventually. The english translation had severe flaws, the graphics did not age very well and the game is almost impossible to find locally. However, I would really prefer that they continue their current trend of remakes and give us an FFV and FFVI remake first.

Favorite : FFV - Awesome music, great job system, and Gilgamesh.

Least favorite : FFVIII - I don't enjoy the Draw and leveling system, which is a shame because I feel everything else about the game is great.

Most looking forward to : Dissidia.
