Like last years Movies of 2014 thread but more general to cover new things and being late to the party on films. Tag spoilers as you feel appropriate. General musings on some stuff I've seen in the last few months. Black Beauty (1994) Saw Sean Bean in the credits, watched expecting him to get a cool horse related death but the film just moves on from his character after about 10 minutes. Dragon Ball Evolution (2009) Went in knowing it was a poorly received but I thought I'd see how it goes for someone with minimal knowledge of the source material. There's a few alrightish fight scenes but there's too much stuff to introduce, training to do and balls to find in the allotted running time maybe another 30 minutes might have let things develop better. Back to the Future Trilogy (1985, 1989, 1990) The answer to the question of I know the major plot points and have seen huge chunks of the films but have I ever watched them all the way through was a no. Real Steel (2011) Its underdog sports movie robot boxing edition. It did at least manage to find a way to deny them the final victory while giving a good enough performance to still let you feel good about it. Hachi: A Dogs Tale (2009) One of those times you go into a based on a true story films knowing how it will end but it still manages to deliver a gut punch to your feelings. It was a good decision to spend some time showing the dog waiting for the master that would never come home before it eventually dies. Coluld have easily gone with showing less of the waiting and just mentioned the eventual deth as the credits started and lost the impact. Frozen (2013) Had one good song sequence with let it go but the rest of the sound track felt like it was there just get an album out and pad the running time. It was nice to see a few things done a little differently like stuff with marrying someone you just met, keeping the villains intentions quiet for most of the movie and have the usual true love guff be non romantic. Nativitey (2009) Somehow this escaped being a crap one off drama on TV and got made as a crap film instead. The last Mimzy (2007) A film that you realise halfway through that you've seen it before it's just incredibly forgettable

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) Free Bird solo. 10/10 Friend of mine watched that movie few days ago. Then he forced me to watch the bar fight scene from YouTube, because it was one of the best moments in the movie. "Manners, make it a man." Then he recommended it to me.

Saving Mr. Banks I got a very Life is Beautiful vibe off of it right from the get go. I knew it was going to have a lot of cheerful sentimentality, but dang, some of those early flashbacks had me thinking, "Alright, so when is the pile of dead bodies going to show up." Really liked the movie though. Glad I eventually saw it.

The Theory of Everything (2014) While it is undeniably an Oscar film (aka a film centered around a male character with a disability and he has to overcome it) (also British), I feel like the formula is broken enough in the sense that while most Oscar-made films are about overcoming a disability/disease, this one is about learning to live with one. Nothing is overcome here, which makes The Theory of Everything all the more real and all the less boring Oscar schlock. Primarily this is because the movie is much less about Stephen Hawkings coping with ALS, but it's rather about his wife (who is honestly the main character here) learning to understand her own needs and desires. If there's one negative thing to say about the movie, then it has to be said that the repetitive, boring piano ping-pong that is the music is the definition of Oscar-contender as well, as in it feels super, super pretentious. Oh, and the Son of Theirs from the Doctor Who episodes Human Nature/The Family of Blood pops in to make Doctor Who references, so if you're a fan, that moment alone is well worth watching. Also, daleks. Two pi out of seven.

The Interview (2014) Genre: Comedy This entire movie is based around making fun of Korea, and it was hilarious. It even had a bit of drama. 6.25/10

6.25/10 Man, I have troubles deciding scores out of ten and here you go rating a movie out of a thousand. Saw The Interview a while back. It was really average. Then again, better than most comedy trash winter usually serves. There was also a funny bit with an almost romance like thing going on between the host and Kim Jon Un, not to mention the guy who acts the dictator being, like, really, really good. 5/10 not enough hot ladies/guys.

I'm on a bit of a Wes Anderson binge so I checked out The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. It took me a while to decide my overall opinion on it, and I think that I love it. It's equally sincere and insincere, and I think that the overall message of the film is that despite this, the meaning that we derive from insincerity and 'phonyness' can still be genuine. This is echoed a few times throughout the movie and I don't want to spoil the absolutely and wonderfully idiotic moments so see it for yourself! Bill Murray is wonderful and the movie is pretty hilarious is slightly melancholy towards the end. It also has great music and some lovely stop motion animation.

For me the most recent movie I saw was Robocop (the ORIGINAL one, mind you). I thought it was a great movie, though I weirdly found myself laughing a lot at some of the scenes in the film, and I personally see it more as a comedy than an action film (hell there were only about four action scenes altogether). I definitely recommend seeing it if you're into 80's films, or robots, or blood, or swears, and so on.

Godzilla (2014) I can see why there was complaints about the small amount of screentime Godzilla got in its own movie but they lack the context of the film having a solid slow build-up and the need to introduce the other creature and the dynamic that brings to the film. If I had to complain about anything it would be that the level of conveniently coincidental protagonist felt a little too high. Also I find it mildly interesting that of all thngs this shares the nest subplot with the 1998 version. Immortals (2011) From the producers of 300 but with none of the lines that make for memes that can get parroted on the inrernet for years. Its an entertaining enough way to spend a few hours if its on TV or streaming at any time.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994) It's a shame that pop culture references have spoiled a few major parts of this but sometimes wanting to see the story behind them directs you to something you may have otherwise overlooked.

First time you've watched it? It tends be on TV quite a lot, and is one of the most rewatchable films IMO. If I see that it's on, I'll tend to watch a bit.

Yeah I'm taking advantage of having the ability to store dozens of hours of content on my DVR to bank films when they're on TV for watching whenever. Its great for catching up on missed classics and checking out trash that you wouldn't want to spend money on.

For all its worth, it just feel incredibly cheap and there isn't a mood I can be in where I think: "Oh yeah, we should totally watch Shawshank Redemption!" An unpopular opinion, undoubtedly, but I ain't going to pretend I like it if I just get incredibly bored trying to watch it. And it's not that I don't appreciate story or long runtimes, heck, I'm in the group that actually loves the Hobbit movies, but overall the entire movie is... well, for the lack of a better phrase, fannying around. If it wasn't for Morgan Freeman, I probably couldn't watch the movie.

For me it was definitly worth watching but I doubt I'll be back for a repeat viewing in the future.
