New guy here with a snow level and a dessert level!

Archive: 17 posts

Hi, as the title says I'm new here an was advised in my introduction thread that I might post my levels here.

My levels are nothing like the fanciest stuff I've seen made in LBPK, but I think they're still fun to play, and I'm particularly happy with the snow one.
Both have got somewhat difficult shortcuts, traps, objects, "treats" and plenty of good places to drift.
As you'll see if you play them I like to play with lights and the winter one changes from daytime via evening to night as it progresses.

So without further ado I present:

If you do take the time to play them I hope you'll enjoy it and take the time to give me a like and a comment if you do. Any suggestions and criticism will be appreciated too, so I can improve in the future.

Thank you, but I'm not really sure what queued up means. I'm completely new to the online bit of LBPK. Do you think you could explain?2015-02-24 14:05:00

Already played both. The snow fjord mountain is good. The houses are built very well.

Queued means that he puts your level in a waiting queue, so he'll play it later. When you go to karting.lbp.me you can "queue " levels.

Played the snow 6 lap race, good overall. I did particularly like the sneaky shortcuts via bounce pads with the added benefit of score bubbles!

The track itself is well balanced with decent drift areas, nice technical sections and scenic enough to draw your eyes away from the racing occasionally.

Solid track.

Welcome to LBPCentral, karting forums. We have a standing rule here though, no questions are ever deemed stupid, so don't be afraid to ask!

Thank you for that!

I was afraid no one would notice if I didn't put bubbles there, because I hid the pads themselves. I don't like the appearance of the bounce pads much, or at least I felt they did not fit in this level.

scenic enough to draw your eyes away from the racing occasionally.
I'm very glad you found it a bit scenic because that was one of the things I was aiming for.

Did you think it was too long as a six lap race?
Personally I felt one needed the time to get to appreciate the track and I thought it was more challenging since there is more time for the positions to change and to make mistakes. However, since i got one comment saying it was good but too long I adapted the timings to fit in a three lap version also.

Edit: I see that several of the people posting here have posted tracks, and I can't wait to try them out

Definitely too long, but as you've now renamed it as an endurance race, it's fine.

My own rule of thumb is to make a race last approximately 5 mins. Enough time for a good race without becoming repetitive.

I do make exceptions to that too though. If i made a new route available on lap 3 for instance, then why not extend the number of laps?

As long as you use the reviews wisely your tracks will just keep getting better.

Looking forward to your next creation!

Played both, good first levels.
I'm guessing 'VolcanOasis' was your first build, just seems theres more overall construction in 'Snow, fjord and mountain'.
Overall: decent, replayed 'Snow, fjord and mountain' a few times (both 3-6 laps). High lap count didnt matter.
The little details got my attention: after the dock launch flying over the construction on the road, the pipes in the mountain hole.
Cool.
Also like how with speed you can get a 'combo chain spin jump', just after missing the dock shortcut.
Speed boost into a 360 spin off the road construction hill into the speed boost then 720 spin over the race start line.
Nice set-up.

Some tiny things got me (just me) frustrated, enjoyed drifting but some corners are 'hard/sharp' (left incline turn after the first tunnel).
Also, turn with the first shortcut the super tight 'S', seemed to hit the hill side going to fast or hit the sign just before the 'jump'.
But these are super small things.
Because I replayed it numerous times to reach high score.
Challenge accepted.

Side note: Try demo play with 'kart resizers' on the 8 race spawn points. Adjust 1 kart resizer settings to 0.5 and copy to the rest, it will make your kart half sized automatically making your track width that much wider (with no work), some of the 'hard corners' would seem widened allowing you to keep speed.
You can quickly set-up and demo this in 'editing level', If effect is not desired just dont save.

Anyways, welcome.
Keep working on your skill, never stop learning.

Thank you for the great feedback valious2corvus. The snow track is actually narrowed on purpose but maybe I should widen some of the corners a bit, I'll certainly have one more look. And you're quite right, "VolcanOasis" Was the first one 2015-02-25 08:18:00

Your levels are good as is, actually better than most 'first levels'.
Dont change anything.
Just keep learning ideas for the next.

I just wanted to thank you guys for the advice, plays and thumbs up I've gotten on my first tracks. It's really fun that somebody liked them and it makes me want to keep creating. So yeah, thanks again! 2015-02-26 18:56:00

Have now played the volcano level and the shorter 3 lap snow track. Same review applies as above for the snow level.

As for the volcano one, as V2C noted, it's fairly obvious this was built first. The marked difference in flow of the track is evident. For instance, there is a nasty crest of a hill with an immediate turn following, meaning you tend to fly off the track. None of those kind of issues with the snow levels, though I would concur with previous review that a couple of the turns could do with widening on their outer edges.

Personally though I'd leave them, there's no serious faults and good playabilty. As far as 1st levels go they're far better than my initial creations!

I would suggest though that if you're unsure on a build, that you ask on here for someone to beta test for you. Getting a good track layout is often tricky. It's very easy to think you've made a good one, but, of course, you know the track!

There are lots of friendly Sackfolk on here that'll suggest tweaks to help you improve future creations and also very clever logic gurus to call on should you need help in that area.

Happy Building!

Thank you scorpio! I think I'll take the time to tweak the snow level a bit later on, just to see if the changes will be appreciated by others. However, I'm not quite sure how I can edit a level after It's been published. I tried to on the first one because for some reason all the random weaponizers gave the same weapon, but I couldn't figure out how. Editing on my moon and saving it didn't seem to do anything, but since no one had played yet I just deleted and reuploaded it. I've watched all the relevant tutorials on creating a level but didn't find anything about that. Also I find that although It's always pleasant to listan to mr. Fry and most are helpful, I find some of them lacking in actual helpfulness. I've had to google quite a lot and figure some of it out myself, which can be fun of course but is also slightly annoying when it feels like it should be obvious to put it in a tutorial in the first place. Looking forward to spending more time with you lot and getting help and advice, and hopefully being able to contribute myself once I've gotten the hang of it a bit better.

If you want to edit a level, make the changes in your moon, then, you have to publish it again on your earth, exactly over your former level. Doing this, you will keep your "like" and "heart" but you will loose your "plays" ( back to 0). So be sure you made all your changing before editing.2015-02-27 01:11:00

Couldn't agree more. Take the time to look through the Tutorial section on these karting forums, specifially a thread called 'Beginners Tutorials'. You'll be glad you did, it'll save you loads of time in the long run. Also look in the Help section, there's loads of more in depth questions in there concerning logic and motors to really bring your levels to life.

And as stated previously, you can always just ask, via the Help section, that's what it's for!
