It's quite late to start discussing about this, but since the winners have yet to win, here are my picks: EDIT: My picks were written tens of minutes before the actual winners were announced. I've written the actual winners below. --- Best Picture: The Theory of Everything Winner: Birdman Actor: Eddie Redmayne from The Theory of everything Winner: Eddie Redmayne Actress: Rosamund Pike from Gone Girl (though I won't complain if Felicity Jones snatches the prize) Winner: Julianne Moore Supporting Actor: J.K. While I think the movie is very strong on a technical standpoint and its wins for cinematography and directing were both well-deserved, there is an aspect to the writing that really seems pathetic. The movie takes the genre of superhero movies and belittles, not only the movies, but also their audience. There is a moment late on in the movie where the main character literally looks directly in the camera and explains that fans of superhero movies don't care about writing quality and they just want to see stuff blow up. While this would be fair if The Amazing Spider-man was the only superhero movie this year or if this was the era of Batman & Robin, Phantom and Steel, but this year there were three live action superhero movies which were actually really good. Complaining about a seriously well competing genre with a lot more creativity and ideas than most other genres ONLY because the movies are action-heavy seems like nothing more to me than a moan for attention. Birdman is not a bad movie, it's not even badly written, but it performs a huge, HUGE lapse in judgment and as a result it really feels dated and tiresome when one tries to compliment its entirety. It looks good, it has exceptional acting, the style of making the movie seem like one continuous shot is unique and adds impact to the hectic head space of its main character and the writing is... good. I just can't really come to terms with this being a winner, given that I think its the third least best of the nominees (after Boyhood and American Sniper). Well, anything is better than the racist, islamophobic piece of utter garbage and the so-bad-it's-terrible writing, acting and directing (FAKE BABY BECAUSE REAL ONES REFUSED TO PERFORM IN THIS PILE OF TRASH) that are present in American Sniper. It's actually a much better psychological horror film about nationalism and fascism than it is about... what it's supposed to be about. Oh yeah, family and duty. Because when making a movie about a person who constantly abandons his family to fight in a war, there is absolutely no benefit in explaining the head space of its main character. It's better to leave it unexplained, so the audience won't start asking questions about the morality of going to war to kill people only because their skin is a bit darker than yours. What an insult to modern age and film-making in general. Absolutely unforgivable. The most terrible thing is that the only reason this movie got anywhere is because it's possibly the last-ever work of Clint Eastwood. If so, then... not a high note to leave on, I'm afraid. Also, fake-sounding gunshot-sounds win sound editing. I don't even... uh, I've got nothing. As for The Grand Budapest Hotel, the second best work of its director... it won quite a lot. It is a very good movie, I still do think so. I just feel like there are a few things about it that don't just work. Still, the most surprising thing is that the Academy is actually noticing a movie that came out before July. A massive surprise. | 2015-02-23 00:27:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |
I am so happy that Boyhood didn't win anything. There is justice in the world. | 2015-02-23 13:18:00 Author: bonner123 Posts: 1487 |
I am so happy that Boyhood didn't win anything. There is justice in the world. Well, Patricia Arguette (the winning supporting actress) got the Oscar for her role in Boyhood. Funny, given that there's not a single character in that movie whose name I remember, but let's be honest here: the only reason Boyhood is given any recognition at all is because it took 12 years to make, which itself is ironic, considering what movie won the best picture last year. Okay, bad joke, sorry. Still, it's a painfully average movie and not really worth half the praise it's getting. | 2015-02-23 15:49:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |
WHAT SHOULD NEVER EVER WIN ANYTHING: One of my top 10 worst movies ever, American Sniper Hahahahahaha. But yeah , in all seriousness, I generally don't follow the Oscars too closely (there are better ways to find the great films of the year, like closing your eyes and throwing a dart at a list of them), but I missed it completely this year. | 2015-02-23 19:26:00 Author: xxMATEOSxx Posts: 1787 |
