Neergnag's escalator reverse engineered

Archive: 10 posts

Hey guys,

I received a random PM yesterday from a guy looking for a good escalator build.

Anyone who has tried building one of these knows that it's not easy. Chain-driven ones look and function awfully. Emitter based ones are much better but still suffer from a myriad of technical challenges to overcome to replicate realistic step motion and not have the steps fall off the base.

Inevitably, aspiring escalator builders usually end up referencing this video in forum posts seeking build help:

YouTube - Escalator

IMO, this is ideal. The steps are locked in place and the motion is perfect. This realistic-behaving escalator is one of the most elegant pieces of machinery I've seen in LBP to date. A lot of people have tried to reproduce this and failed. However, I went through the same tribulations months ago, but I was successfully able replicate Neergnag's escalator and even improved on its construction.

So, I've uploaded a tutorial on how to build this mechanic marvel called "Professional Escalator tutorial" and included my own build as a prize. Hopefully, this should help you guys out in builds of your own and save you hours of work and sanity in the process. Enjoy!

I played this after you published it last night. I hadn't even registered how mechanically cool the thing was when I saw it in your current work in progress level... I was like "ah, I remember this" when I played this. It's a very cool machine, functions perfectly, and is definitely a design I would mimic given the right theme. Malls, airports... and tons of different variations for a design like this to make the beaten-to-death conveyor belt section a thing of the past.

I have about ten object demos hearted, and this is one of them.

Sounds pretty useful. I may have to use a similar system when designing my Grindinator-X (tm).2009-03-03 15:28:00

I've recently noticed that Youtube will display the "This video is no longer available" message whenever it gets a mild connection hiccup. Reloading the page generally works... so much for "no longer being available". 2009-03-03 16:04:00
