So, comics, I like 'em. I've been buying them a lot recently and I couldn't find a related existing thread so I'm hoping theres some readers. I was hoping to start a general conversation about what you're reading or have read, what series you like, what you're looking for, and just general chatter. So I've been getting into Batman lately, written by Scott Snyder and I love it. Since I've only just got all of them this month I'm on issue #30 about Doctor Helfern (Death) and The Riddler which I'm reading right now. But I've been broadening my collection lately with new comics like Arkham Manor, Star Wars and I'm looking into the limited Darth Vader series, The Nameless, Borderlands Fall of Fyrestone that I believe is on it's last issue now ,#8. And a couple more. Do you have anything to say or contribute?

Confession time, I was a big-time comic fan when I was younger. My mom reading them to me when I was, I don't know, eight or something and me going on to rack up a collection contributed a lot to my understanding of the English language (whether that's a good or bad thing I leave for other people to decide). That said, I don't really buy them all that much these days though I do semi-regularly browse nearby retailers and buy the occasional trade paperback. I think a lot of it has to do with both modern day Marvel and DC's infatuation with angst-y drama and overhyped and overblown crossover events; most of what I might buy these days are actually probably older runs. My favorite comic is probably Neil Gaiman's Sandman (not to be confused with the Marvel villain). As far as comics go, it has an incredible blend of elements that would probably seem impossible to make for work together but it does and does it wonderfully. Got the complete set and worth every penny. The other set I've been meaning to finish is Walter Simonson's run of "the Mighty Thor." It's considered the definitive run of the comic and features some of the greatest moments of the character and gave him and his supporting characters a sense of epic grandeur. Truthfully, these days I'm more interested in Marvel Studios' projects on the big and small screen than what Marvel Comics is doing and on that note I know the third Thor movie is going to be an adaptation of Simonson's "Ragnarok" storyline. I've said it before but I only hope it's at least quarter as good, because if it is it would still make for an incredible movie.

And there are seemingly endless crossovers that require you to buy 6 comics in a week. Not as though it's a problem, but gets pretty dumb. I prefer single issue plots and an new plot in the next issue. I read a little about Sandman and noticed it had pretty positive opinions but I never picked any issues or collections up. I think I read about the comic series having been finished.

Yeah, the series proper ended roughly over two decades ago, though since there have been a number of one-shot stories, cameos and most recently a prequel series. Even though the main series itself has one long and intricate, overarching plot the setting lent itself very well to standalone stories if that's your thing; the 6th collected volume "Fables & Reflections" is almost nothing but a collection of these. They're all really good and you don't really need to know much at all about the rest of the series for them to make sense (or as much sense as those stories can make). There's also "The Dream Hunters" standalone, which is actually done in the style of a Japanese Fairy Tale rather than a comic book and features artwork by Yoshi-taka Amano, the artist who did the conceptual artwork for the earliest Final Fantasy games. More recent reprints of that story feature artwork by another artist but frankly I feel that the much more traditionally comic book art style that was employed for that ruins the tone of the work.

I just downloaded Volumes 1 to 10. And there downloading now so, I'll start reading them soon. There seems to be a couple of new comic series this month. Stray about a sidekick whose mentor is killed, Divinity some kind of Russian space exploration superhero thing, Black Hood another superhero comic, D4VE which I've no clue. And then there's the existing and ongoing Batman #39, Batman 66 #20, Futurama #74, Star Wars #3, Darth Vader #2 of #8... And a couple of others. Marvel and some other companies are releasing some second and third prints of comics I don't have this month. Man, I need to get paid soon.
