Problems and solutions

Archive: 6 posts

Good morning, afternoon or evening. The sun is somewhere when you read this.
First off, Hello to all sack-folks new and old.
Time to dust off the karting beast again.

Today, I am going to talk about 2 things that almost stopped me building a race-track.
1."Locked track position"
2."Game freeze during build"

A little back story, I started my first race-track build (everyone needs at least one).
I started to lay the track, twists turns... everything seemed smooth.
Nothing complex added. Just the first layer (the track).
During the 'test runs', finding the flow.
I decided to make it sleeker and started 'shifting' the track into position, for better turns and smoother runs.
And this is where the problems started...

Problem 1: Locked track position
First thing I noticed is if parts of your track are close to each other and you try to 'shift' them.
The section will become red highlighted and not move (the become locked).
How to fix: change section of track to 'bridge type'.
Why: The problem occurs because of the ground to track connection.
You can then resume 'shifting' that track, once your done you can always add the ground back.
Problem 1 Sovled

So thats what I did, saved and made the whole track a bridge.
Went around setting the height and flow of the track.
Finished about half the track, changing back the 'bridge' to actual ground/hills.
Then kablam in the face, FROZEN.

Hard reset, and back in.
Shifting, setting, shifting, frozen... Again last week, yesterday same, today again?!

Problem 2: Game freeze during build
Anytime I started adjusting the track it would freeze up.
What I started to notice was everytime a 'shift' happens: the rails would automatically adjust.
Not just a section of the rail, but all of it (the whole track rail).
Shift, automatic rail adjust, freeze.
Fix: Remove all the railing from your track.
Why: automatic re-adjust of rails causes 'game freeze'.
Once your track is 'set', you can always re-add your rails where you want them.
Problem 2: Solved

These 2 problems hit me hard, I almost stopped and scratched the build.
I thought it would be best if I shared how they occured and how I got around it.

Hopefully It helps.

This is some good info, thanks for this! I run into the track locking quite often.

However, this is probably supposed to be in the tutorials section. The mods might know better.

Hey V2C. Don't get to that stage of frustration, we're here to help!

Unfortunately it's true there are a number of glitches with the editor, specifically during track build. But almost certainly one of us has come across it before and will get you back 'on the right track' as it were.

Any problems going forward with your first track give us a shout!

I know we are all here to give a hand... unfortunatly these problems happened during the 'down-time'.
And the only solution I had was to solve them.

Now that the site is back, there are a few questions that are floating around.
1. Is it possible to 'cut' through the ground under a track? Without cutting away a channel (the ground under the track straight down to the other).
What I'm looking for is a hole not a valley (I have my doubts, I believe its only a channel cut that has to be decorated - masked visually).
2. Is there a way to get more track thermo? I've layed full track and adjusted. I went to 're-roll' a section but what it allowed was 1/4 of what I erased (about 20 sections of track, giving me back around 5). Also have my doubts, I have a feeling it has to do with the previous 'shifting' of the track.

1. Cut using the circle shape terrain SCULPT tool, NOT deform. Adjust using L2 to deep and then Keep X pressed until the 'cutting' noise stops, you should have a hole. If under a track you have no choice but to either change track to a bridge or remove track or change to 'no respawn'.
2. Recovering thermo is an ongoing battle.
A few tips:
Remove any rails you don't need, you are better off replacing them with a created object. Another trick there is to use forcefield material shaped roughly to the edge of the track and throw some appropriate 'decorations' on it. 1 piece of material used but effective barrier made covering many rail lengths.
Keep different material usage to a minimum. Wherever possible choose maybe 3 or 4 maximum and just adjust the colouring and brightness to achieve the effect of numerous types. You can incorporate texture on the material during the creation of the object by simply cutting away the 'face'.

I realise this isn't specifically going to help with 'track' thermo recovery, but it will help as your level goes on.
Any more thoughts I'll add.

Think we need to get this moved to the 'Tutorials' section though!

If you mean a tunnel going through the ground, that's not possible. But masking works in many situations.
