The Office.

Archive: 108 posts

Just wondering who else watches this? I don't get to watch it regularily but I love this show; my best friend DVR's it so he usually has me watch the newest episodes.

My recent favorite one is when Dwight faked the fire drill because no one paid attention for the fire saftey meeeting. he ended up cutting off the face of a CPR doll thing and putting it on his face and doing the silence of the lambs thing lol.

I saw the title The Office and immediatly thought of Steve Carrell, so I didn't find it misleading at all.

I've watched both Offices UK (its whole 2 seasons) and been keeping up with the US version every thursday night. Honestly the UK version isn't funny in the slightest, compared to the US version. The US version capitalizes on awkward situations, and the UK version is just dull, like a straight documentary of an office in the UK. Watch the first episode, supposedly monumental, and watch the classic jello stapler and how the sales rep reacts and is more concerned with office property, how is that funny? Dwight/Jim do it so much better.

Also, Ricky Gervais humor seems so forced in The Office, a sign of bad acting imo. It just doesnt/didnt work for him. He fit the role.. but couldn't act it.

If you havnt seen alot of the office, you can really make assumptions from comparing these two videos

YouTube - The Office UK - Jelly Stapler

well i was gonna post the link from the american version, but youtube is being OCD about copywritten videos again

I'm going to have to contest this. I believe that whether or not my title is misleading is going to be culturally biased. For me being from the USA alls i've really known IS the US Office, I did watch some episodes of the english one and didn't really care for it that much.

And also the US one has been running for 5 seasons now. And el oh el at super sickie

It's also terrible. The Office USA is actually nothing like The Office in terms of humour. But like you say, it's a cultural thing. The only thing America is good at is satire.

I'm really not sure how that it was so great and only lasted 2 seasons. And I don't really get english humor that much it just seems really dry and...not that funny to me. Not sure what to call it even. But oh well I guess, the American show appears to still be running strong.

no offense to anyone here although im sure you will be offended, I know a lot of you are from the UK. It's just my preference obviously, I usually laugh histerically from things like Family Guy / The US Office and just don't find English humor funny at all in comparision. I also love Seinfield.

I enjoy both versions. I think the US version became a much better show once it started doing it's own thing, rather than trying to be an exact replica of the British version.2009-03-03 17:24:00

I'd say I hit the point dead on. The UK office is dull and boring, and the awkward situations... are actual awkward situations from an office. Part of the US office charm is the outlandish humor and impossible situations. Obviously dwight/michael would have been fired in... season 1?

Every time I have this discusion American humor is always insulted on a whole. Its pretty a pretty tired arguement, when none can explain why the UK office lasts for 2 seasons yet US goes for 5? If the UK version is a fine example of UK humor on a whole, and it only lasted for 2 seasons, what does that say?

Nobody wants to watch how an actual office works for crying out loud...

There wasn't a 3rd season because Gervais & Merchant didn't want to do a 3rd season. As simple as that really. It wasn't cancelled, the creators wanted to do something else (i.e. Extras). A lot of great shows only have a few seasons. Guess Americans have never heard of the saying "Quit while you're ahead". =P

I guess American show creators are creative / good enough to stay ahead for more than two seasons. I don't want to be pulling these punches but you arn't giving me another option. Seinfield for example ran forever...not exactly sure how long, friends, family guy, simpsons, the office is at 5 seasons now, Lost is on season 5 or 6... There are alot of shows; you can't use that excuse of quitting while your ahead well you can it just isn't very flattering for them.2009-03-03 17:48:00

Seinfield, The Simpsons, Family Guy and Friends all got worse as they went on. The Simpsons especially is terrible now. It's also got nothing to do with being creative (every episode of Friends is basically the same, haha Petter and Homer are dumb, wow that Kramer sure is zany!).

Creating more than one good show = creativity. Joey =/= creativity. The Cleveland Show =/= creativity. There's nothing creative about having the SAME CHARACTERS in the SAME SITUATIONS for YEARS. Creating a number of good shows = creativity.

Compare what Jerry Seinfield (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000632/#writer) has written to what Ricky Gervais (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0315041/#writer) has written.

Their so creative they kept it pumping for 2 seasons.

Maybe the UK isn't ahead like you'd like to think? Perhaps they need to catch up and start re writting the same old same old as you think it all is... because doing the same thing over and over obviously has lead to success Eg. 5 seasons of the same old crap is still going strong where creativity in every episode lasted 2 seasons.

*They're. Their is possessive i.e. That is their ball. They're is short for They are, as in They are (They're) so creative.

Perhaps you should learn English, maybe then you'll be able to read what I wrote explaining why they only did two seasons.

Ya I would contest that they are obviously doing something right lasting over twice , three times or more as long as the UK office. Perhaps it's just you / a small minority that feels that way because clearly the majority or a large enough number of people don't to keep the shows going.

I would also contest that they it is hardly not the same exact scenario, obviously the characters stay the same...thats the premise of a show; same characters just diferrent scenarios. People grow to know and love these characters.

If they were exactly the same scenarios as you've over simplified them to be I highly doubt people would continue to watch them. South Park is still going extremely strong because they use the same characters but base their episodes off of current events (which gives them unlimited material)

[Edit]: And yes he clearly got your point, and decided to pick on things other than your point to avoid it.

I know it wasn't pretty but I thought we were keeping it to a fairly civil debate. But I agree that its out of hand. And I made this thread with the intention of talking about everyone's good times watching the office not to start a US vs UK flame war; and it upsets me it turned into that

Ya I know you mean well. This subject is obiviously very touchy for all of us because we all feel our country's humor is funnier than the others. If someone has an opinion I'll respect it but it really infuriates me when someone not only states an opposite opinion from someone else but does so in a cruel manner putting the other person / beliefs down.

and obviously both country's have their own opinion / taste on humor so its not really even debate I guess over opinions. And i"m sure there are minorities in both cultures that prefer or enjoy the other cultures humor; really shouldn't of gotten to that point so i apologize for myself, I just got heated when I was insulted over the America comment

I guess I'll just let this thread fall down and maybe try to start it up again with some disclaimers next time.

Truth of the matter is that US television networks literally suck the creativity/life right out of every show that's a semi-hit and that's coming from an American. LOST was originally meant to run three seasons as it was a solid story, but the network forced them to continue as ratings were huge. In the midst of the third season - after ratings had faltered considerably - the network backed off and finally set and end date to the series after the sixth season concludes. However, some creators/writers are always as fortunate.

Seinfeld ultimately had to pull the plug on his own show because it was going nowhere and if that doesn't prove a point then I don't know what will. Seinfeld is a show about nothing after all. Ratings really hadn't suffered to a great degree, NBC had done well with Thursday nights dating back to Cheers and the viewers were still there. Jerry just had to put his foot down though. Good for him.

In turn, the success of a show should not be graded on how long it's been on the air. Instead, the impact on culture is a better measurement in my opinion. Considering the rights to The Office - created by Gervais and Merchant - have been sold to networks in over 80 countries I think that's proof enough that the show itself is a success.

Which is funnier? It's strictly opinion, people. The British comedy is groundbreaking to say the least. Gervais and Merchant are - in my opinion - two of the greatest comedy writers of our generation. The series was written as twelve episodes and they came back for a two-part holiday special and the request of BBC and the popular demand of viewers. The series won both BAFTA's and Golden Globes to boot. Needless to say, it was loved by both viewers and critics alike while it was on the air.

The American version is funny as well, but in a completely different way now that the series has blossomed a bit and I'm not sure it's headed in a good direction. A few characters are extreme personalities (Dwight, Angela, and Kevin) and the show is becoming something of a one-trick pony. Each week, you can ensure that Dwight with say something sexist/offensive, Kevin will become even dumber, and Angela will obsess over her cats and/or fool around with Dwight. It's still funny, but for how much longer?

There really haven't been any new developments this season; go back and watch if you don't believe me. Sure, Michael likes Holly the HR Lady, but who really cares? Jim and Pam seemingly have relationship problems that are always solved at the end of each episode. Like I said, I'm watching, but maybe it's only for that Fonzie-like moment...

Thank you for intellectual non belligerent input supersickie. But about Boomy's / halfasack's comment, sure he should've worded it more nicely but I think he has a valid point that Boomy was just stirring up some potential drama based on the fact of subtling accusing people (possibly me / halfasack) of attacking people for having a valid opinion which wasn't the case, it was only due to getting attacking on top of their opinion being stated.

but i don't really mind i'm ready to drop that entire arguement its obviously clear that everyone (especially different cultures) have different types of humor they find more funny than another, and not everyone is satisfied by the same thing obviously.

the point i was trying to make is you don't have to attack eachother to make your point, be civil about it; give valid reasons that don't involve just saying someone else's humor sucks. (which i kind of resorted to myself out of anger so sorry,.)

I like watching The Office (US) occasionally. I haven't watched the UK counterpart (besides the clip posted here) so I can't really comment on it. Part of the reason it might not be funny to US viewers is the difference in cultures. What may be funny to us may not be funny to them and vice versa. Just like movies might change titles slightly to make more sense in other countries.2009-03-03 20:18:00

So you mean to tell me I put you down so hard you resort to minor grammar errors and personal attacks?

You've edited your post now, but all you had originally posted was "Their so creative they kept it pumping for 2 seasons." Which is just a sarcastic remark with no sort of explanation, so that's exactly what I responded with, especially since I had already explained why they stopped after two seasons.

South Park is still going extremely strong

I agree, South Park is still ace, because it's satirical and always current.

supersickie basically summed up what I feel about long running series, the creators lose control and the show becomes stale (which Gervais didn't want to happen, so he stopped).

If they were exactly the same scenarios as you've over simplified them to be I highly doubt people would continue to watch them.

They are and they do. Take 24 for example. The plot for every season is the same.

There's a terrorist attack planned in whatever city Jack Bauer happens to be in. The terrorists manage to launch a small attack, because someone in the FBI/CIA/CTU helped them. Someone close to Jack dies. Jack finds the terrorists and finds out who the mole in FBI/CIA/CTU is. Turns out the mole was a double bluff. Or it wasn't. It's all pretty much the same. Plus it's pretty much jumped the shark by now. In the last series, Jack returned form 2 years in a Chinese prison, had a quick save and Bang! he was just fine.
But no matter how repetitive it is people still watch it (myself included).

However, while escapism is all good fun, Gervais & Merchant value their creative integrity, which is why they stopped, not because they were out of ideas.

Also, I'm please point out where I've badmouthed your favourites show.

I said I thought the US version is rubbish and people have said that the UK version is rubbish. Fair enough.

The point I've been making is not that UK TV is better than US TV, but the fact you all seem to think that because The Office US has run longer than the UK version, it's some how inherently better and that the writers have more creativity. This is not the case.

It seems you've missed the point entirely.

If we all can't be a little more mature about all of this I'll be forced to lock the thread. Understand I really don't want to do this; I love The Office whether it be on NBC or BBC 2. Let's just take a deep breath and move on.

I guess you don't belong here. I wasn't pretending to be a mod, I was just keeping stuff in order till a mod arrived. You know what, I don't care about it anymore, this thread is a big mess at the minute.

Stuff it, you're just acting immature and are rating this forum higher just because of a couple of people. Sorry, but I care enough for this place to not let you just say it's like every other forum.

Mod or not, it's not anyone's place to say that a newcomer doesn't belong just because they express their feelings. That kind of pointed statement isn't necessary and it won't be tolerated by myself or any other staff member.

Truth is we all like coming here and participating in a good debate/discussion. This is everyone's last chance to get back on topic on a friendly level. If someone - anyone - doesn't comply I'll start handing out infractions. It's not something I enjoy doing, but I've asked several times and see no other choice in the future.

Last chance. Make me proud.

IDK man, as orginator of this thread I've seen 0 produtivity or anything good come out of it; it was just shot down immediately and then told over and over again it's a crappy show. Although I don't agree with Winston at all about any of his points that's fine i'm mature enough to let it up and not stir up some more drama at all.

I would suggest locking the thread as sad as it is because I wanted to discuss / share fun times w/ the office not point out how someone says their show is better and just be a downer which is off topic IMO. IDK just lock it if no one else has a problem with it

Wow. Does this REALLY need to be a USA vs British thing?

I watched both - and I gotta tell you - BOTH were incredibly funny, but approached things from a totally different angle. I'm not sure I even have a preference they were so different. It's kind of like having an argument "I like Monty Python" with the reply "Oh yeah?? Well I like ham sandwiches! You wanna fight??"

And BOTH have had actors which became popular in Britain AND America. Very talented cast in both.

The British version had some REALLY cutting edge one-liners in there that would definately have been censored in the American version... ones that I was left saying, "Holy crap.... I can't believe he just said that!"

I LIKE this thread! But I think it can contain both series AND be positive!

American version:

Ok - yes, I thought the fire episode was one of the FUNNIEST episodes I have ever seen! Especially the cats!

British version:

The actor that plays the boss is quite possibly one of the funniest guys I've ever seen. Love his style! And he's been in some great movies lately.

By the way, I'm really glad the British version was so popular because without it we wouldn't have had an American version. I'm just glad they did it right - remember what happened when they tried to take "Faulty Towers" and create an American version? (with John Laraquette?) Horrible.

No I supose not, thanks a lot cubbage; your awesome. As long as people can keep it civil and not resort to subjective arguements that can never be won, I think we'll be fine.

Also ya the cats were pretty hilarious....they look at her screen and they saw that one cat doing the other one and she had to run home and they saw angela licking the cat hahah and she comes back and coughs up a hair ball.

OH YEAHH! Man, my wife and I have been talking about that for WEEKS! I think the whole Angela thing and her cats is some of the best material in there...

Going back a little - Dwight was supposed to be taking care of her cat, but instead he put the cat in the freezer and told her it had died??? (there were claw marks on the boxes in the freezer - Hah!)

Interestingly, I've been a fan of Steve Carrell for probably the last 15 years. He used to be on "The Daily Show with Craig Kilborn" (now Jon Stewart) and before that he was a troop member with Second City.

For Americans who are not familiar with the British series, here's some stuff you would have seen THOSE actors in:

Dwight character from British Office: Thin pirate with dark circles under his eyes in the Pirates of the Carribean movies.

Michael character from British Office: The boss in "A night at the museum".

The "Jim" character from British Office: Arthur Dent in "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" movie (which would have been better if Douglass Adams were still alive... sniff)

How about the time Ryan started a fire in the office? They ask Dwight what his favorite movie is and he ignores them, all the while high-kicking a sign posted on the building. Camera goes off of Dwight and back to the group. Silence. And then you hear Dwight say, "The Crow." Awesome. I laughed so hard then and do every time I see that episode.

UK series... I know it's cliche, but David's dance in the second season is pure gold. For the viewers who have only seen the US version I seriously recommend finding this scene on YouTube (should be there). You think the Steve Carrell moments are uncomfortable? Get ready to feel your skin crawl...

Yeah, not just a piece of the cardigan. A whole. Freaking. Sleeve. Unreal.

Gervais and those one-liners are so good. Best David quote:

You see the way I react to people. I make them feel good. I make them feel like anything's possible. If I make them laugh along the way, sue me. (DRAMATIC PAUSE) And I don't do it so people turn around and go 'Ooh thank you David, for the opportunity, thank you for the wisdom, thank you for the laughs.' I do it so one day, someone'll go 'There goes David Brent. I must remember to thank him.'

I remember watching the pilot episode of the US Office and hating it. It was pretty much just a recreation of the first episode of the UK version but about half as funny.

But I have heard that it does get much better once they stopped trying to ape the UK version and found their own niche for the characters and humour. I'll have to check them out one day.

As for there being only 2 series of the UK Office. As was already said it was the writers and directors decision not to make another series. They felt that the 2 series were great as they were so rather than just milking the hell out of an idea they'd already pulled off exceedingly well they decided to move on and try something else. You don't have to milk every last drop of blood out of something before you kill it off.

Alot of British series only run for 2 series. In the UK it's known as a bit of a golden number. Great comdedies like Fawlty Towers, Spaced, Alan Partridge, The Day Today/Brasseye, The Ali G show, People Like Us, Thick of it, all ran for 2 series or less. I think it's one reason British comedy is so cutting edge and funny.

I think it's a cultural thing that British people see comedy as being far more than just something to make you laugh. The best comedy also provokes, offers social commentary, challenges boundaries and conventions and challenges the viewer themselves.

Sosaku - that post wasn't NEARLY as funny as the previous posts. You need to brush up on your comedic skills.

But you're absolutely right. I think they found a great happy-medium with the Blackadder series - just change most of the characters and the entire setting every season and base it on the anscesters of the previous season.

Ok, the jogging episode - Michael decides to do a charity jogging (I THINK for Meredith, who he hit with a car).

Andy complains about the jogging because his nipples are really sensitive to chafing. So he ends up taping them with scotch tape to protect them from his shirt.

By the end of the episode, he has 2 red blood marks on his shirt! Go check out this episode if you haven't seen it already. Absolutely hilarious!

Is it also common for each season to only last six episodes? I know The Office and Extras were done that way, but Merlin ran twelve or thirteen. I love Merlin!

On topic, what about the time Garreth - UK series for those that don't recognize the name - is in the club making out with some chick, and looks over only to see a dude watching them. Turns out to be her husband... and then Garreth is seen at the very end of the episode riding home with the couple in the sidecar of their motorcycle. So awkward.

Most shows do 6 episodes seasons, some like Life on Mars do 8 episodes and a few have 13 episode seasons like the new Doctor Who, Torchwood, Robin Hood and Merlin. Most of those were in the saturday 7pm(ish) time slot. I think the BBC are doing 13 episode seasons of their bigger budget drama series with the intention of selling them overseas (particulaly America).

I assume your referring to Michael's statement at the end of the episode. I don't know, but it's getting ridiculous in my opinion. For one, we all know he's not going to quit and - more notably - there isn't a successful company out there that would tolerate his antics or childish behavior let alone give in to his incessant whining.

Anyone else notice how we're kind of back to square one after last weeks episode? Everyone's worried about losing there jobs all over again. They equate it to today's economy, but it feels old to me nevertheless.

Here's hoping they manage to finish strong and original.

I was thinking the same thing - HOPING they have something up their sleeve and aren't "jumping the shark".

But on the other hand, it's the fact that he's still there regardless of his unprofessionalism and whining that makes the series funny in the first place.

Maybe in the next episode Michael dies in a car accident on the way back to his office, Jim and Pam get married, Dwight and Angela get back together, and the whole thing ends up in a spin-off show called "Andy and Toby".

I agree that Michael's antics are - by large - what makes the show funny. However, it's past the point at which you feel uncomfortable for him. Now, I'm just uncomfortable because he's so extremely pompous and whiny. That said, I'll continue to watch every week like the drone I know I am.

And since supersickie (a regular contributor to this thread) is a mod, he has the right to come to your house and smack you on the forehead with a slide-ruler if you pull off old scabs.

I sort of feel like they should have ended the US office a while ago. I liked the original Office because it was short and sweet. We tend to drag out our dramas and make them go on for 9,000 seasons.

On a side note, I live 20 minutes from Scranton, Pennsylvania. It's so weird to me that they set the show there. It's just a small city, basically. Nothing special about it at all.

They ended up having this big office convention two years ago, and I got to go and meet Phyllis, Angela, Ed Helms, Andy Buckley, and Mindy Kaling. It was so cool! ^_^ No Jim and Pam, though.

I watched the Office on thursday night, and I REALLY hope they pull it all back together. I agree. While I thought it was a great episode, it seems to me that they're breaking things beyond repair. A real business would never give michael his job back after some of the stuff he did. My guess is that they're setting it up so that they realize that the new boss has NO idea what he's doing (after all, he put KEVIN on the phones...) and will try to get Michael back. "The Injury" is great! "I want you to rub butter on my foot".

The part where Dwight vomits on the back of his car sent me over the edge literally. I was laughing so hard that I started choking and had to take serious steps towards not dying. After I composed myself, I backed up the PS3 ten seconds and watched it again and again. SO great.

Well, we have seen Michael actually shine at times in the past, like when he completed the sale with the client at Chili's. I also noticed that throughout this season, the writers have made it clear that the Scranton branch has suddenly been very successful. I think they will use that as a reason to bring Michael back. Now that he is gone, maybe all the others will realize that while he was crazy, annoying, and offensive, he also truly cared about them and wanted them to enjoy coming to work. That's been my theory anyway.

You just made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. And the fact is... I'm not that far off from Michael as a boss myself, and I haven't been fired yet... so maybe it's not so unrealistic.

My favorite part of the Injury was the cold open. I think that might be one of the best cold opens ever. I do enjoy the "future dwight" opening, too though, where Jim keeps faxing the faxes to dwight... from the future!

The Injury, as a completely random fact, was written by Mindy Kaling, who plays Kelly Kapoor. I usually think the episodes she writes are hilarious.

and yes, guys, I have faith that that's why they're going to take Michael back, too. They've been building up the fact that he's somehow doing a great job all season, and now he leaves? I think the branch is gonna go to pot with him gone!

Good episode last night. First time in awhile I was laughing hysterically throughout the show. If you haven't seen it yet, imagine the hilarity that ensues when Dwight is forced to... wear long sleeves! 2009-04-17 16:19:00

Oh man! Loved last nights episode. "$9000 seems like a lot for an acapello band that went to a college we didn't go to"... "Did you even HEAR the music????"2009-04-17 19:07:00

YouTube - The Office UK - Jelly Stapler (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOkxLvFQQXE)

well i was gonna post the link from the american version, but youtube is being OCD about copywritten videos again

Watch it on hulu: Hulu - The Office: Stress Relief - Watch the full episode now.@@AMEPARAM@@http://www.hulu.com/embed/6zYhhfqFRppF08qQbW-SMQ@@AMEPARAM@@6zYhhfqFRppF08qQbW-SMQ

LOL this is the funniest one

I honestly can't decide how I feel after last thursdays episdoe.... I'm glad that it's obviously gonna go back on track... but I was kind of hoping for a seris finale including Jim and Pams wedding... dunder mifflin closing and MSPC taking over but...

IDK I just saw it coming, everything perfectly falling back into place for another season

It was however, the biggest nail bitter episode I've watched in a while... i was on the edge of my seat as soon as the elevator hit top floor and michael was all hunched over.... then he kicks david wallaces butt in the meeting... then dwight gets that call... omg my blood was pumping...

Was last thursdays the season finale or is there more to come? I'm a huge fan of the office but after this last season... i don't see how they can really continue on w/o recycling or seeming like their drawing it out... but they have awesome writters i hope they pull it off.

Charles is still lurking, hollys still an unfinished story, pam and jim have yet to get married... those are the only things i could see them running with... everyone else has had their episodes.

I'm scared to see where the show is going

I watched the British series first and I liked it. Then I started watching the american one and hated it because they started by just copying the original. But later on I decided to give it another try, as a different show in it's own right. Now I like both, in different ways.2011-02-06 19:34:00

I never noticed this thread before but I've seen both versions (the US and British) and I think the humor in the British version just isn't the same for me as the American one. I guess you could say the British one has worse language in it but I don't think it helps make it any funnier.2011-02-06 21:02:00
