Strange respawning

Archive: 9 posts

Hello all,
I'm almost finished with my level, a pretty simple loop, with a material covering the path. No special respawn logic, but when you get reset, it brings you way across to the other side of the track. I have no idea why it's doing this, thought someone migh have a clue.

I'm also using the limit of breadcrumbs, which seems to cause some strange "off track" resets when passing by those areas. It occurs randomly, not every time, but often enough to be a problem.

Please lend your knowledge!

For the second point, you can avoid the off road problem by adding shortcuts all along the road. Problem is that the shortcut has to begin and end on the main road.
For the first point, you can delete some breadcrumbs and replace them with shortcut.... That's just an idea.

I would like to use branches, but for some reason, it's extremely picky about where I can use them (even though my track is a simple loop). Apparently the limit of number of branches and breadcrumbs you can have is tied together - so if I reach the limit of breadcrumbs, I can't place any branches.

I think your first suggestion would work, but I'm using breadcrumbs for off-track paths, and don't have spare to use around the whole track.

If I'm remembering correctly, I have 10 breadcrumb paths being used. I wonder if that's the max number you can have, I've never tested it before, nor do I know if longer breadcrumb trails have a larger effect on the total number that you can have. Is it simply a static number of separate breadcrumb trails, a total distance of pathing in breadcrumb trails, or a mixture of both?

I think I can incorporate several of my small breadcrumb trails into longer, main track covering breadcrumbs.

Thanks for the idea!

It's a shame to have to announce that the problem persists. I've reworked the breadcrumbs to cover the whole track, to no avail. I deleted a few obstacle pathfinders and covered the track ground with drivable pathfinders under the idea that maybe the obstacle designation was causing some sort of no drive/respawn zones.

Any other ideas?

I know when you create a track, it automatically has built-in respawn points (only having the start spawn, the track will fill-in respawns).
Have you thought of manually adding spawn points along the track? It might counter some of the random respawning.

This is a great idea. I had a minor thought of doing specific respawn, but that would mess with the flow of the race. However, if I just throw a few arena spawns along the level, maybe that would give a better respawn than its current confusion.

Thanks, I'll give this a go.

Sorry for being a noob but can someone explain to me what branches and bread-crumbing is?2014-12-18 04:49:00

Don't know if you are familiar with lbpkarting but in create mode, in your pod, when you select the icon on the top left, you can choose between breadcrumbs or shortcut (branches). Breadcrumbs allows you to draw an alternative path in your track. Shortcuts allows you to make... shortcuts or alternative branches, but it is often used for preventing from out of bounds issue too.
I made a tutorial about " how to make your track changes at lap 2or 3". It's in the tutorial section .

Check it out if you want more information.

Thanks Val!

I got it to work with your suggestion! I tried just placing blank arena respawns, but it just ignored them. I tried setting up a simple forced reset, set to a blank name, like all the respawns had a blank name by default, and it still ignored them. But! I gave all the arena spawn points the same name, and used that name in the forced reset, and it started to recognize them! And you even spawn at the closest one to boot!

So with that, this track is finished.

Branches are additional track you can lay that branch off of the main track and rejoin it further along. It can be used for short cuts or split paths, or alternate paths. It lays actual track and adds to your total track consumption.

Breadcrumb trails can be used for any pathing issues, shortcuts, and paths through terrain you don't want messed up by a track. This doesn't add to total track consumption, but there is a limit to how many you can have.

Hope this answers your question sufficiently. They both are found in the track modification menu.

Derp. I thought this was in the LBP3 forum. But I do own karting, so I guess it's still good to know.
