[Video] 2D Top-Down Point & Click RPG Concept Demo

Archive: 9 posts

This isn't a playable level (ie, it's not available for the community at the moment), but it's something I've worked on for two years, and I wanted to share anyways, and I'm not sure where else to do it. It's probably a lot more exciting in video form anyway.

Here's a video of me playing around on my biggest (and sadly, unlikely to ever be finished) LBP2 project. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qiis4C0D4IM) I touch on most everything that functions in my level, but it might be a lot to try and comprehend. I might provide a more detailed commentary later (especially once I can poke around in create mode again), but for now, I'll just explain a few things.

1.
I'm not a pixel artist. Also, most of the stuff in the level is made out of hologram material because I started making this before sticker panel was a thing, and changing all of the animations would have been a very tedious effort, so I resolved to simply make all the new ones out of sticker panel (which you can see later in the video with the bed animations.)

2.
that uh... horned figure that I briefly change to at around 10 seconds in and later on in the video is supposed to be the main character. It's probably really difficult for anyone who isn't me to make out what that's supposed to be, but here are two better depictions. Here's (http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/037/3/e/safety_in_shadows_by_ryuhza-d4ow8np.png) the drawing that I based the model off of (you can see the head portion of this drawing in the video, in the upper left corner when I open the menu), way back in early 2012. And here's (http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2014/194/3/6/oswald_orozco_2014_digital_by_ryuhza-d7qjk7k.png) a more recent, digital design. The rest of the sprite sets were for testing. The arrows that you see just before I enter the bathroom were the initial animations I used to test my animation system. The turquoise guy is what I use as an animation base, for modelling all of the other characters (there weren't many before I gave up on this, sadly).

3.
The bright green dot that I play with for a bit in the middle of the video was supposed to be a commentary node. Earlier this year, I came back to this level and, not wanting two years of effort to go to waste, planned on writing out a bunch of commentary on each of my level's features, how I put it together, what I wanted it to eventually become, what went wrong, etc. And then I was going to release it to the community. The node works as it's supposed to, I just never got around to actually writing the commentary. At first I was waiting to get a wireless keyboard for my PS3, but then I got that and... well, I'm doing this instead.

The rest should be mostly self explanatory.

You've really got something there! You need to complete a project using this. Any reasons not to, throw them out the window. This is brilliant and original. I've yet to see this in any levels. I think if many people see this thread they'll encourage you. I'd love to give it a go.2014-12-14 03:47:00

Well, fortunately, the biggest hangup was the framerate in LBP2, and that's mostly been resolved. The other hangup was that this level and it's assets and logic took ages to make. I was still in high school for most of it's creation, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to dedicate the same sort of time now that I'm pursuing higher education.

Still, there's a lot I could potentially improve upon with LBP3's new tools. Now that collisions can be disabled and opacities tweaked for every material, I wouldn't have to use sticker panel so much in the environment (which was a pain when it came to changing lighting conditions, since sticker panel doesn't normally react to light changes).

Thanks for moving it to the right place, however, I don't think it's going to get any visibility here. Since I'm considering continuing this level in LBP3, do you think it could be moved to that ideas and projects section? The last thread in this section hasn't been touched in a week.

On the upside, at least here you're guaranteed a front page position. 2014-12-15 12:03:00

One other thing I didn't mention; I actually designed two other areas (a motel lobby, and the motel's exterior, which you can see slightly through the bathroom window) that the character can tromp around in, but they don't have any interactive things except for light switches and, of course, doors. I had temporarily removed them back when I was working on this level in LBP2 in order to improve performance, and I never got around to reincluding them. If I were to do so now, I'd have to become familiar with logic I haven't touched in a year, but I think it's perfectly doable.

Right now, interacting with the door handle sends the player to a permanent transition state, as you can see at the end of the video. Normally, the first room would be removed and the second room would be added in it's place, it's arrival triggering the end of the transition/loading period. With the second room's emitter/tag command deactivated, it never arrives, and you're stuck with a black screen (I actually designed a couple of loading screens too, but I think I deactivated the camera that shows them).

Hopefully I'll be able to share more tomorrow when they add more DLC compatibility and I can finally get to this level in create mode.

looks fab! I would totally give it a go in LBP3 and continue with this - I'm a sucker for a good point and click, so I'd be all over this like a .... sackgirl with an embarrassing medical condition. 2014-12-15 23:11:00
