Anybody else into 3D printing?

Archive: 5 posts

Since we don't have a section about other hobbies I thought I'd post this here. I've been wondering if there's any other people around here that are into 3D printing. I've been into it for about eight months. My son and I started out buying a prusa i2 kit. Built that. Had it putting out good prints in no time.

We were hooked immediately! So, naturally I went to work designing my own version of a delta style 3d printer. We planned on making two. One for each of us, (he wanted to take his up to Michigan Tech where he attends university) so once I got the parts designed we started printing them on the prusa. We had to buy a bunch of the stuff you can't print (they call it vitamins) and some of that other stuff we built. I came up with my own hotend design and built that. I also came up with my own heated bed design and built that.

Once his was finished I started printing parts for mine. I disassembled the prusa and used what parts I could. I did have to buy a few things though. All in all it was a great experience and it's opened up yet another addicting hobby for me to tinker with.

Here's some pics

Just one of my prints

I still have to finish the control panel and I have some mods planned too...

Thanks for reading!

Actually, mine is huge as far as printers go. The prusa we started with was much smaller. It might have a footprint of about 18" x 18" or so and only bout 14 to 16" tall. If you ever do find any room/time and like to tinker it's a blast of a hobby...

Awesome thing you printed there, invite guests and go like: Yeees, yes that's design furniture, by myself.
We have a 3D printer at our school, but I only printed a duck once. xD I have no idea how to operate it, had to give the teacher my 3D drawing and she did the rest. But now someone broke it and they're busy repairing it now. I can't wait to use it again though, it's great fun!
