Connections between LBP3 and previous games

Archive: 10 posts

As I was playing Story Mode in LBP3, I've seen references to previous games, besides the bomb survival reference.

In the level "The Great Escape", I see two antagonists. One of them is obviously Newton. We know him well. The other was the Collector, the bad guy in LBP1. I think you can see him in either Oddsock's section or Toggle's section. It's just that the collector keeps coming back. He was stealing creations in LBP1, and he's still there?

In "High Stakes Heist" in Manglewood, I found a similarity when you get to the point when they say "when the chips run out, we blow the place up". The scene where you have to run as fast to dodge the explosives was much similar to the part in the Canyons level "The Mines" where you have to escape the giant fire boulder near the end. The music change and the drop to the escape section just reminds me of that.

Have you found any other similarities like what I say?

The Collector wasn't siding with Newton; Newton was trying to build his own versions of the LBP1 characters. The High Stakes Heist level is more reminiscent of Bang For Buck in LBP2, where pretty much the same things happen.
Later on in The Great Escape, you can also catch glimpses of a Newtonified King, Queen and RoboBun, not to mention some crocodiles in Even Bosses Wear Hats Sometimes.
Another one, easy to miss, is during Oddsock's section, disregarding the Da Vinci blueprints left, right and centre, you can see a gigantic cardboard Da Vinci head towards the end. It's during a fast paced section though, so take it slowly and you might be able to see him.

Yeah, you can see copied, Newton versions of some of the previous story characters as you go through the last levels. The power of the Titans gave Newton the ability to steal the creativity for himself, Newton is a terrible creator so he just copied other people's creations and whacked a bowler hat on them, or colored them pink. Feels like a reference to level copying and other not-so-creative behavior we've seen in previous LBPs.

Does kind of remind me of this though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Opebw8FXOHI

Yeah, I bet Newton is even worse than the guy we see on the cool pages when it comes to copying and republishing levels. I love seeing games that make references to community-related stuff in the canon parts of the game.

The reason why I think High Stakes Heist is like The Mines rather than Bang for Buck is because near the end, there is a section where you have to run as fast to avoid getting hit as if you get hit, you start over. The chase scene starts out with a trapdoor, and the music changes to some rock 'n' roll like music. There was no trapdoor or rock 'n' roll music in Bang for Buck in the last scene.

And I saw the other characters in Newton's lair.

It seems I am the only one who noticed this:
Every LBP game has a chasing boss where you have to run away. In every game it's the boss of the third world.

There's four of them in total:

Skulldozer
Copernicus (turkey monster)
Garbage truck thing in Coaster Valley
The second titan

I think that shows the producers are losing creativity.

Losing creativity? Hardly; it's become a tradition. Use of tradition isn't lack of creativity.2014-12-10 07:35:00

Since they did plan it out to be a specific number, it is more of a tradition, like 11th said.

Unless they were like, "Let's 'make a tradition' so we can knock out one level easily!" And then they'd rub their hands together all menacingly and stuffs. I'm pretty sure that didn't happened though.

Although I do like the chase levels. They are fun, especially that Garbage Truck one. Although I watched the truck one since I don't have a Vita, I would have hated trying to get that 2x prize. xD

Oh I didn't knew the Vita has it to. Never played the Vita version. Is it in the third world too?

It's in the fourth, I believe. Yeah, the 2x bit was a challenge, definitely.2014-12-10 20:45:00
