Terminator is an awesome movie, not because of the action, but the story. My brother has been dreaming of a future war movie for years (10 in fact, since he was 7), so it will be hard to meet his expectations... he thinkr it might though2009-03-01 22:00:00

From McG? I wouldn't count on it. Terminator died with 3, when it became a money-making franchise that threw out everything that made the first two great. And now there are plans to milk this one until oblivion. I heard talk about something like FIVE more Terminator movies. Plus a flopped tv show. I'm still going to see Salvation, but I urge everyone here to keep their expectations low - otherwise you'll just set yourself up for disappointment. The Terminator series has officially reached its "milking" phase.2009-03-02 00:40:00

Shane Hurlbut: I was looking at the light.

Bale: Ohhhhh, goooood for you. And how was it? I hope it was ------- good, because it's useless now, isn't it?

Hurlbut: OK.

Bale: ----- sake man, you're amateur. McG, you got ------- something to say to this prick?

Director Joseph 'McG' McGinty Nichol: I didn't see it happen.

Bale: Well, somebody should be ------- watching and keeping an eye on him.

McG: Fair enough.

Bale: It's the second time that he doesn't give a ---- about what is going on in front of the camera, all right? I'm trying to ------- do a scene here, and I am going "Why the ---- is Shane walking in there? What is he doing there?" Do you understand my mind is not in the scene if you're doing that?

Hurlbut: I absolutely apologise. I'm sorry, I did not mean anything by it.

Bale: Stay off the ------- set man. For ----- sake. Alright, let's go again.

Just to get a tidbit in on this Christian Bale thing -

Christian Bale was way, way out of line in his overreaction. But he's also given a very genuine public apology: YouTube - Christian Bale Apologizes for Tirade - Public Apology for Freak Out KROQ Exclusive w Kevin and Bean.

At the same time though, this kind of thing is actually not too uncommon on movie sets. The reason it was such big news this time is because it happened to have been recorded and subsequently leaked. Much like the Lily Tomlin/David O Russell explosions on I Heart Huckabees. This stuff, unfortunately, happens all the **** time. It's a weird profession. In many ways it's a totally backwards industry. It's usually the people who completely explode and go absolutely over the top in their behavior that get their way, who DON'T get fired. If a grunt on a movie set had a similar reaction, he'd be fired on the spot. A movie rests on the shoulders of its director and its stars. If they explode, there's very little anyone can do.

Ed Harris punched James Cameron on the set of The Abyss. This isn't very well-known though - it wasn't recorded and leaked. There have been numerous, far worse blow-ups, even on recent films, than the Christian Bale meltdown - but they don't get any attention because it's (sadly) common in the industry, and they happened to not get recorded.

While the DP Shane Hurlbut did make a genuine mistake in walking into Bale's eyeline during filming, Bale's reaction was unbelievably out of line. He embarassed himself and belittled the DP in front of the entire crew, knowing he couldn't do anything about it. Not cool at all.

That said, I went to film school years ago and learned over and over again - do not get into actor's eyelines. Do not move while the film is rolling. Be quiet, be still, and wait until the work starts to move your *** and check the light. I couldn't believe that a DP would do that on a huge film, when it's one of the first things we learn in film school. But it still doesn't remotely excuse Bale's behavior. You take the DP aside, you talk to him in private. You don't throw a tantrum in front of everyone.

Terminator 2 was my favourite. 1st one was a bit boring, 2nd one had better storyline and good action scenes aswell the 3rd went a bit over the top and blew everthing up. Now this looks ok, but changes the storyline alot by the looks of things. So now John Conner won't be the "hero" (at first, anyway), someone will be his villain(even though no time paradox would happen) and a giant robot will appear firing random things everywhere. I kind of liked the plane type things featured in the first two fims' future scenes, even though they looked like tin cans on strings. Now, films are getting too over dramatic in my oppinion and the future battles in the first two films and even the third were shown in a much better looking way than in this trailer, I'll still go to see it though since I've wanted to see this terminator movie for years.2009-03-29 05:26:00

I recently watched the first movie for the first time ever and I thought it was ok. Since way back I've seen T2 a few times now and then but now I got to see what happened before. T3 also rocked and I'm sure the next 3 will be great.2009-04-03 12:08:00

I just finished watching T2 again on blu-ray, still as good as I remembered it.
So I decided to watch the 3rd one as well but if you watch them back to back it becomes so painfully obvious that someone else is behind the camera.
It's not a bad movie by any means but certainly lacks the depth of the 2nd one.

I'm not so sure about the 4th one, but that has more to do with the fact that the future-war really doesn't interest me all that much.

You're not stoked for the rise of the machines?! Are you serious?!

I'm pretty excited about it and feel confident the film will satisfy as two additional films are very much underway. The studio wouldn't invest that kind of time and money into something if they weren't uber-confident it would pay off.

I'm just not sure if an entire movie set in the post-apocalyptic war is something I want to see.
+ Its an entirely different cast yet again, I love Christian Bale but I would liked to have a little more continuity with the previous films.

I wouldn't put so much faith in Hollywood if I were you! In Hollywood, there's a machine they keep in the basement, they don't tell anyone about it. What they do is, they take people's faith in them, and they feed it into this machine, and it grinds it up and they mix in some toxic chemicals, and out of a conveyer belt on the other side comes gold, jewels, and candy - all of it poisonous. They've run franchises far into the ground before this one. If you hear deals being made for 2, 3, 4 more movies, it very likely has nothing to do with the actual quality of the current one (nobody making the money deals bothers to watch many of the movies - they ask one question: does it make money?)
It'll probably do very well financially, even if it's terrible. That's all it takes for a 4-picture deal. If they can grind hype, they can turn a dollar.

I'll say this as well - McG is known to nobody for making good films.

I hope Salvation is a fun flick. I'll definitely see it - I can't NOT see it. I've grown up with Terminator. I had the Kenner figures as a kid. I'll probably flinch and squirm a lot, because T2 is one of my absolute all-time favorite films and T3 made me want to eat my glasses.

So the extent of my hope is that it'll be a fun summer movie distraction. But for anyone that's a fan of T2, just keep in mind that the franchise properly ended when Sarah Conner said "Maybe we can too", and a rolling image of a dark highway faded to black.

Did anyone end up actually seeing this??

I came back from the movie the other night. for the most part, it was as I expected (a vigorous but unimaginative milking) - with the exception of one thing.

The plot...
The plot was so... sooo... SO... STUPID!! I couldn't BELIEVE IT.

Spoilers for anyone who has seen it or doesn't care about this brillinat piece of work being spoiled:

Skynet wants to kill John Connor because he's the future resistance leader (not quite yet though). Even though it's already been proven that THIS future is a changed timeline from the future talked about by the time travellers in the first 2 movies. Things have changed and the timeline has branched out.

But even still, Skynet is obsessed with killing John Connor. So its plan to do that?

First, to create a cyborg that thinks it's completely human, and... release it into the wasteland. Second, to capture teenager Kyle Reese, who in the OLD "future" would grow up to be sent back in time in order to conceive John Connor. Don't kill him, just capture and hold him.

That's pretty much it. Why?? How??

Well, for whatever reason this cyborg, Marcus, finds his way to John Connor by a series of somewhat random events. After Reese is captured and held at Skynet, Marcus and Connor plot to sneak into Skynet (ARE YOU SERIOUS???) and rescue Reese. It works! The machines' brilliant plan has brought John Connor right to their front door! So they dispatch a terminator (even though it's effing Skynet and they could probably just THINK HIM DEAD if they wanted) to kill him. Well, what the hell. Why not. John Connor gets free and then blows up Skynet and escapes with Kyle Reese and Marcus. Amazing work, machines. Great plan. Fool-proof. This is what the internet community would call "epic fail".

Seriously, the machines in this movie are revealed to be so unBELIEVABLY stupid that you might actually LAUGH at them. Skynet, when described to me in the first 2 movies, was actually disturbing. It was a deeply disturbing idea, and built up in frightening fashion. Well, guess what. It's okay everybody! In THIS version of the future, Skynet's certifiably retarded!

Great plans, Skynet. No, really. You did a good job.

YOU F---ING IDIOTS. (I think I'm referring to the writers as much as the machines in this case).

Seriously. It boggled my mind how stupid this was. I mean, I can only go so far with suspending my disbelief during a movie. But this is going so, so far off the deep end that I can't possibly hope to buy ANYTHING the movie's selling.

It's also just drab! The future war in the previous movies has been an unimaginably dark, desperate place. Here it's basically just Mad Max with the occasional robot patrol. That sounds really really cool, but somehow these genius filmmakers couldn't even pull THAT off. The future's not that bad a place here, people have most amenities they have today, just a bit more run down. a bit more post-apocalyptic. but otherwise, they seem to get by pretty easily. Fighting the future war is literally shown as "hanging out". You just kind of hang out and occasionally kill a terminator. Jesus Christ. It's just BLAND. There's no sense of humor. There's also no dark, desperate struggle. It's just weak, flimsy. This movie is an over-boiled noodle.

And everything in between the stupid bits is bland action. I wasn't even into the action sequences. the car chases with robo-bikes. The big giant terminator could have been cool, but had the classic effect of being very efficient at killing non-characters and utterly inept when it came to shooting at the protagonists, so you just sort of shrug and roll your eyes and say "here we go again, another stupid action movie". This, I expected. The mind-blowing stupidity, however, actually went far beyond even my expectations.

And speaking of protagonists, the movie can't pick one. It's Marcus, then it's John Connor, then it's Kyle Reese, and then it's Marcus again. Ultimately it's Marcus. but again: this movie is a noodle.

I don't know if there's anything it did right. Some neat looking terminators. the very first terminator John Connor has a "fight" with, a very very short scene, is a good one.
Sam Worthington did an alright job as Marcus. But there's just not much there to work with.

The concept has sooo much potential, apocalyptic nightmares have the potential to be everything that sci-fi can be when done well - pure metophor, with endless depth and meaning. I'm expecting mindless action, though.

Surely the plot can't be as bad as the third: "Skynet can never exist after T2 and the way we will get around this fact is.... (shhhh no-one will notice)". T3 kinda lost me at that point (the beginning).

I deliberately didn't compare Salvation to T3 when I discussed it for one reason:

T3 was so utterly forgettable... that I completely forgot everything about it. I mean seriously, I don't know what the hell happened in that movie. I remember Judgment Day coming at the end. I remember a chase scene with a fire truck... That's about it, man.

well, not quite. I remember it being a laughably unimaginative re-hash of T2's plot - 2 terminators sent from the future, one to kill john connor, one to protect him. The "new" evil terminator was the Terminatrix (oh my ****ing god), which was a mixture of the liquid metal t-1000 and... a regular metal terminator.
I mean, holy god almighty, REALLY? You cannot POSSIBLY, no matter how hard you TRIED, be LESS imaginative than that.

No, I'm pretty sure that Salvation is better than T3, but I really, really can't be sure, as I've forgotten so much about T3, as I might be likely to do with Salvation.

I can't agree more. The only thing I do remember is the brazen disregard for the massive plot hole that is the continuation from T2. I was really hoping for some intelligent loophole, even if it wasn't 100% sound, but nothing? Come on.

Ha - I just checked, I have terminator three on the shelf, still wrapped. I've clearly only bought it so that I have all three of the films and it cost like ?3 in the supermarket.

Yes, I was quite disappointed at the film, but when you put time travel into a movie, the story line gets messed up, BADLY.

You know how the Terminators have those red cores that are nuclear, and destroyed Skynet? Why didn't they just send a robot with that, and make him blow up? Would have been much easier...

Some things were cool, like the looks of the robots, but that was pretty much it. The only character that was pretty good was Star, the girl who DIDN'T TALK. She just helped all the retards that were too stupid to do anything by themselves.

My brother is 20. He first saw Terminator 2 when he was 7. One of the things that drew him in most was the Future War.

13 years he waited for this movie. 13 years.

I still don't think he saw it. We were going to when we were in Disney World... but he didn't want the rest of the vacation to be ruined due to 13 years ruined with this.

That said, I never saw it either. ... May be best. Shame... this movie had so much potential

Go to see this movie expecting it to be an average scifi action blockbuster, you'll be fine. It was never going to be anywhere near the original and comparison to a groudbreaking movie which has remained iconic for 24 years is unfair.

That said, it could have been a whole lot better. Marcus was the only compelling character for me and I think the tragedy of his story had the potential to be quite a beautiful, powerful plotline. As it is with John Connor being the absolute cornerstone of the terminator mythos, Marcus could never have been properly explored, and his plot was all too predictable. which I tihnk was a shame

And regarding time travel. I don't mind storywriters sidestepping paradoxes and inventing their own rules for time travel, it's poetic license. But it's lazy to just not bother with even a token explanation. This was my issue with T3

I saw it yesterday and it was good to average. The end all seemed a bit rushed though- all I remember was the skynet place blowing up and John Conner in a helicopter saying 'The future is not written, blah blah blah, a storm is coming' (pretty much the same thing was said at the end of Terminator 2

EDIT: I mean Terminator 1, just watched it again. LOL- the special effects on the terminator near the end are... realistic

EDIT: Does no one else think those big robots were almost copied from war of the worlds? They made strange tones like them and had prisoner baskets.

Also, what was the point in the computerised Arnold Schwarzenegger?

I just came back from watching this with my mate. I totally agree with your spoiler, Gravel. 100%. As for who was meant to be the protagonist - Kyle was made out to be so great at one point, and all I could think was "All he's done is point a gun at a few guys, shoot once or twice to no effect, and then get captured." Big hero. Oh and he gets some time travel tail. Big deal.2009-06-05 22:11:00

If you want an deep, artistic spin on arnie being there, the T800 was the one that John Connor befriended as a child. Remember how emotional the death was? Serious emotional trauma there. Juxtoposed with this is the fact the John has probably been dreading the rise of the T800 for years. This is a powerful emotional combination that they just didn't utilise. So yeah "for teh lulz" is way more accurate.

Kyle Reece shouldn't be a hero at this point in the timeline. He should be a kid who is just surviving. We know john is supposed to take Kyle under his wing and make hime into a proper soldier. He is significant only in the sense that if he dies, john connor will never exist and john connor is the keystone to the survival of humanity. We have known this since before he was born.

Also, being rather geeky here. Kyle Reece comes back in time to protect Sarah when he's a good 5-6 years older than in this film AT THE LEAST. At that age, he cleams the T800 is a new prototype. So Arnie is appearing 5 years earlier than he should be. Now I know the timeline changed, but the timeline changed, but the timeline changed to push BACK the progress of skynet, so arnie is appearing a good 10 years early.

Personally I like how sony are still going strong in a post-apocolyptic world. Helps me sleep at night when I know I can still buy consumer electronics after the inevitable nuclear war.

Well he was only there for a minute anyway before he got burned and looked just like a bigger terminator. They could have used an old recording of him saying '... I'm back...' or something since he couldn't do another film.

Surely the best course of action for the machines is to create some sort of organic virus/poison/whatever.
