Problematic Packaging - Survival Challenge [MmSc] (Pictures and Video!)
Archive: 34 posts
Name: Problematic Packaging - Survival Challenge [MmSc] PSN: The_Killian Description: Trapped in a box! Avoid the turrets and waste chute for as long as possible! (1 player survival challenge) I've been working on this for about 2 weeks. Unfortunately, I've missed the LBPC contest due to exams but hopefully Mm will notice it. You start off inside a small box and you have to avoid the turrets shooting paintballs. When your health bar reaches zero you lose. Includes custom turrets given as shareable prizes. F4F: You'll probably have to wait until next weekend as I have to finish exams but I will get back to anyone who requests so in their comment. Images: A couple of pictures with the in-game camera: http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/littlebiggallery/images/455/large/2_A_Photo.jpg http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/littlebiggallery/images/455/large/1_A_Photo_1.jpg Video: A nice guy over on the Workshop forums uploaded this for me. HltdSYOfWwU They don't give an account picture of the level in my opinion. :/ Thanks to ThommyTheThird and Yarbone for testing it for me. Have fun. | 2009-03-01 19:55:00 Author: Killian Posts: 2575 |
good to see you published it Btw i was talking about the box emitter at the actual challenge not the one in the beginning... I hope we where talking about the same... But you get the idea about popping the boxes out of the wall like that drawing i made.. | 2009-03-01 20:05:00 Author: Yarbone Posts: 3036 |
Uploaded a couple of pictures with that terrible in-game camera. | 2009-03-01 21:30:00 Author: Killian Posts: 2575 |
That was well done, I did enjoy it. The Pros: +Everything looked great, and was well detailed. Good use of the MGS pack. +Your turrets were actually your turrets. I have seen enough MGS turrets. +It was fun, with an original idea. The whole box idea was great, making it so much more original than the other conveyor belt Survival Challenges. The Cons: -I just followed the track the first time, and fell right to the finish point. I was confused, until I retried and stayed in the main area. maybe you should explain this to people so they know were to stay, and they won't just go falling into storage. Overall though, it was a great level, visual-wise, and gameplay-wise. Great job! 5 stars and hearted. I shall play this level some more so I can beat you and your highscore, as I am only third right now. | 2009-03-01 22:07:00 Author: Kog Posts: 2358 |
Thanks Cog. I'll change it so that it warns you next time I'm on my PS3. Oh and you'll never beat my score! | 2009-03-01 22:18:00 Author: Killian Posts: 2575 |
Aww, you republished it I had a score around 1900... now i'll have to beat you again. EDIT: Also, you can still jump to the right instead of down the tube Probably not going to fix that, since it's cool. And tehre's gas so there's no exploit. How do the score bubbles spawn man.. Sometimes you get a 2x multiplier, and sometimes you don't.. It's weird One more question.. What does MMsC mean? I see ti in a lot of Survival Challenges' Names... | 2009-03-02 14:03:00 Author: ThommyTheThird Posts: 440 |
NO! I've beaten you're score, but dieing reduced my score a bit.. Now im still second. I'm not stopping untill i beat you. EDIT: I walked over your score man. Added 900 points | 2009-03-02 16:04:00 Author: ThommyTheThird Posts: 440 |
I really liked this! I've seen the "sackboy in a box" thing done before, but never in a survival level! Its a simple, but fun idea and I think you did a wonderful job with the visuals in the level. Well done! | 2009-03-02 16:04:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |
I beleive the scoring system is really instable. The bubbles get spawned inside the box, so you acquire the points right away. BUT, sometimes you're big face get's in the way, and it doesn't spawn points. This happens for example when you stand still. Not sure how to fix it, only fix i can see is collection points at the end, so when you die you pick up all the points you rightfully own, and then to the scoreboard. But it's quite ugly :S | 2009-03-02 18:56:00 Author: ThommyTheThird Posts: 440 |
How do the score bubbles spawn man.. Sometimes you get a 2x multiplier, and sometimes you don't.. It's weird One more question.. What does MMsC mean? I see ti in a lot of Survival Challenges' Names... MmSc means Media Molecule Survival Challenge. Mm told everyone who made one to add it to the title so that they could find it easily. About the score bubbles. I'm aware of the problem but I'm not sure how to fix it. Every 10 seconds or so you get an added bonus which adds to the multiplier. I'll try to make the score bubbles tiny and put it in the very corner so that you don't block them. I really liked this! I've seen the "sackboy in a box" thing done before, but never in a survival level! Its a simple, but fun idea and I think you did a wonderful job with the visuals in the level. Well done! Thanks for the feedback. Glad you liked it. | 2009-03-02 20:24:00 Author: Killian Posts: 2575 |
Awesome level! Love the design! Love the concept. Only if there were more platforms, it COULD be more fun. | 2009-03-03 10:49:00 Author: uzman Posts: 209 |
I don't think you should fix the score bubble thing. If you make them too tiny, standing still might stack up a few point bubbles, making a combo really easy, thus slightly cheating yo?r score. I'm afraid it's not really fixable... | 2009-03-03 14:22:00 Author: ThommyTheThird Posts: 440 |

I'm afraid it's not really fixable... I have the emitter on "Max emitted at once - 1" so it will work fine. | 2009-03-03 14:45:00 Author: Killian Posts: 2575 |
Oh ok, then i guess that's the best option. But are they emitted towards the middle of the box? If not then i think you should. Because if they just drop down, they can still be uncollected when you're standing still. If you know what i mean. | 2009-03-03 15:19:00 Author: ThommyTheThird Posts: 440 |
Update: Tinkered with the score bubbles to make them more reliable. Added further explanation to avoid confusion. Changed a couple of colours/materials. Reclaimed the #1 high score! Edit: When I republished it, I locked it so it was locked for most of the day. | 2009-03-03 19:53:00 Author: Killian Posts: 2575 |
Did you get that score with the current version? Or with the old one? Because.. highest i can get now is 1500.. And when i scored 2900 i didn't survive nearly as long as this time... | 2009-03-04 16:05:00 Author: ThommyTheThird Posts: 440 |

With the old one. I just tested it and the bonus points you used to get are no longer working. Sorry about that I'll fix it now. | 2009-03-04 20:38:00 Author: Killian Posts: 2575 |
Very cool level. I played this for at least 40 minutes straight yesterday. I'll be back to beat my score. I have the third or fourth highest score now, not so bad. Nice concept, very well done. 5 stars, hearted. Take a look at one of my levels if you have some time. Thanks! | 2009-03-05 16:23:00 Author: JackBurton25 Posts: 116 |
Also, not sure if it still happens as you said you fixed some issues now, but sometimes i saw point bubbles flying out of the box. This happened only when you were spinning quite fast, for example when you try to jump over a box or something. I'll check it out soon. | 2009-03-05 16:28:00 Author: ThommyTheThird Posts: 440 |
This level was definitely a job well done. I love survival challenges, they seem to be so addictive to me, I am always determined to be my high score...lol. Loved the idea of the box and using your own turrets made it so much more original, even though I did a review on it for ya just wanted to comment on it in here as well, since of course it is such a great level....keep up the good work... | 2009-03-05 16:29:00 Author: Lil-Pingin Posts: 396 |
Just played this a couple of times, and I loved it! Especially the humor, I actually laughed out loud at the second poor "package". Also, the look and feel matches the theme very well, it's what you'd expect a dangerous factory to be like. I was actually quite surprised to see that you created your own "this way up" icon for the packages using two arrows, even though you get such a sticker by playing the Mm story levels (or possibly a tutorial? can't recall now :S ), but it looks OK nonetheless. As with most levels I play and like, I actually tried "breaking" it (i.e. finding safe spots to stand in or knocking off the turrets somehow), to see if the creator or any testers he/she might have asked had playtested well enough, but - thankfully - I failed. I must say, though, I actually almost managed to clog the chute leading to the end of the level with one of those long crates... maybe it's possible if you try long enough, but the next couple of crates/skulls could dislodge it even if it did get stuck. Perhaps it's worth some more investigation or testing... Anyway, I had fun playing this one and will probably come back to get the high score at some point. =) Oh, and my prediction is that this is going to be the #1 pick for the next batch of Media Molecule Survival Challenges. Great effort all around. | 2009-03-05 18:31:00 Author: sny Posts: 144 |
Yeah, i did indeed see the chute get stuck on a long box once, but it got dislodged by the smaller ones bashing into it. Anyway, if there's an easy fix you might want to change this. Also had to say that i OmgwtFBbQ0wned you're score (Which was already owned by a random guy) once again. #1 babeh!! | 2009-03-05 19:52:00 Author: ThommyTheThird Posts: 440 |

Thanks again for the review. I might hold a contest for the highest score. Not yet though as I don't want to draw attention from "Survive This!". Very cool level. This happened only when you were spinning quite fast, for example when you try to jump over a box or something. I'll check it out soon. I think this is because I put a trajectory on the prize bubbles that aims for the middles. Maybe the speed makes them pop out. I'll slow it down a bit. The only other flaw I can think of is that it can only be played with 1 player. | 2009-03-05 21:00:00 Author: Killian Posts: 2575 |
Just played your level a few times.... + Awesome concept, made me smile when I saw sackboy in the box + Great intro, invalid contents, and getting sent down the chute + I don't think I'll ever get sick of seeing Sackboy in the box + Great concept, avoiding the paintballs, and the things coming down the conveyor, keeps you constantly on the look out. + It gets very hectic when the other two turrets kick in + I can't stop playing it!!!! Its an awesome survival game, probably the best I've played, the scenario, looks and playbility are spot on. A very good job ***** and hearted. I'll be back to this to get a better score. Awesome job. Loved it | 2009-03-05 22:07:00 Author: GruntosUK Posts: 1754 |
Thanks Grantos! Thommy is destroying my score so I better get playing. | 2009-03-06 20:09:00 Author: Killian Posts: 2575 |
Oh my god I JUST played this like 10 seconds ago without noticing the thread. Don't bother with F4F with me, but: PROS: -My god. I can only imagine whats happenning to that poor sackboy behind that thin layer in the beginning. how can you do that to the poor thing??!! (I mean it's funny as heck! thud! Ding!) -Custom Content, always good. -Interesting concept. -Looks funny. Just a box jumping around. CONS: -Verry little warning before the turrets start shooting. -Gas to the left is very far forward, I kept thinking that i'd be OK. That is all. I've already 5 stared and hearted, so thats no problm. BTW, thanks for giving my my daily LOL | 2009-03-06 22:50:00 Author: DRT99 Posts: 431 |

First off congrats on moving up to the 2nd (I think) page of Cool Levels I played this the other day, here are some thoughts: I have been playing a lot of really great survival challenges form these forums lately so my expectations are now rather high. The good news is that your level delivered! I have personally not played a survival challenge that used this kind of mechanic so you automaticall get points for doing something original which I am always a big fan of. It was a cool way to start with the LED's and the lighting in general was really great. The lvl had a "glossy" look which I guess can be attributed to a color filter you used because I have seen these materials before but they never looked like this lol (and that is a good thing). I was actually able to jump over the gap and get over to the other side. I think it would be cool if you added a point bubble bonus for those who manange to do this or otherwise just the block the way with some invisibe dark matter. The gameplay was great and after a while it got very frantic! I liked all the different things coming out of the machine and I like how you used different color paint for the individual turrets, nice touch. One suggestion I might have is to use colored lasers instead of the default red just to add some more flavor. Overall I had a lot of fun with this and gave it 5 stars and a heart! I hope you were able to go back and complete Pulse and I look forward to any further thoughts you have. I also hope you will be following this up with another full-fledged lvl, we all saw what you are capable of with Earthquake Evasion | 2009-03-07 12:56:00 Author: OCK Posts: 1536 |
Adding a sound just before they shoot will make it lame in my opinion. I like it how the turrets have a certain pattern, and a certain time before they shoot again. It requires you t pay attention to where they last shot, so you can see where the new "safe place" temporarily is. But that's just my thought. | 2009-03-07 13:08:00 Author: ThommyTheThird Posts: 440 |
This should be up in MM's website. This level clearly shows Killian's expertise in aesthetics, this simple-but-awesomely-fun challenge is worth a play (and a heart, 2 hearts if possible!) Found it on the cool pages, and it will obviously stay there for a looong while Pros Gets challenging overtime Didn't use anything MM made Frantic and Fun! Cons Single-Player only 5 star'd and hearted. If you could check out my level (down theeeere) it would be awesome! | 2009-03-07 13:24:00 Author: AwesomePossum Posts: 446 |

That score bubble thing is a good idea, I'll implement it in the next update. I've just started working on a new new project (not the one in my sig) which will take me a lot of time to finish. Sorry for taking a bit of time to get back to you on this, I've been kinda of bust recently. I thought your level was great fun. Played it over and over for at least 10 times, but kept struggling with the large oblong boxes. Getting up on top of them was very tricky. I kept thinking of the saying 'DON'T PANIC' as it kept pushing me towards the drop Great visuals and an excellent example of a great survival challenge. Pros Challenging and Tricky Great Visuals Giggles a plenty Cons Single-Player only (would be great in two player) Keep up the good work m8 Scoob | 2009-03-10 18:24:00 Author: scooby4953 Posts: 43 |
The only way you would be able to make it a 2 player version, is by having the players manually jump into a box. But then again, i don't think it's a big deal that it's 1 player only though... | 2009-03-10 21:23:00 Author: ThommyTheThird Posts: 440 |
