Ultra Beginners and Girlfriends (pics added!)

Archive: 28 posts

Ok I started to design a new level. This level is going to be an easy level for beginners or people that just recently started playing videogames.
I wanted to do this because not only my girlfriend is starting to play videogames but more often then not, I see there's alot of easy level but they are crap. My last level also has hard parts and I felt it was easier to make them compelling. I mean, now I want to challenge myself at making some compelling easy level.

What do you guys think about the concept of an easy but good level?

Do you know casual players or beginner that might want to play a level designed for them?

What makes an easy level rewarding for you? (or them?)

Hmmmmm, I like a level to be challenging. But if it is easy, to make up for it a level has to have a fantastic story and fun and clever parts to it. What theme are you basing this level on?2009-03-01 18:58:00

Right now I was toying at some unrealistic look of candies and chocolate.

Ha ha, cool.

Yeah, it should be a fun, happy, Candy land themed level . Make sure you have the valentines day pack, because that has some useful materials and stickers, and the Christmas one as-well.

If you like, i did the same thing with my Hungry, Hungry Capybara level, if you want some inspiration, you are welcome to try it. I made it for my wife for valentines day, because shes not to great at playing, but she thinks the game is cute.2009-03-01 23:24:00

Yeah, i dont mean to shamelessly plug my own level, although it looks that way. If you like what you see, then if you want my help i would totally collaborate with you on the level you are working on. if not, then i'll just pop in from time to time to give you my 2 cents 2009-03-02 10:33:00

TJapans "Hungry, Hungry Capybara" level is a great example of an easy yet fun level. You might want to check out my "Wizard of Odd" level also. I designed that to be an easy fun level catering towards younger or less experienced players. I think colour and quality visuals play an important role. Also a nice non-complicated story is always appreciated.2009-03-02 10:52:00

Visuals are definitely key, but do not forget plot. If you make a level with a compelling plot, the visuals can quickly become forgivable. My friend once made a level about cloud people. The visuals weren't that great, but the plot was hilarious. A level about how the other cloud people kicked him out of the sky because he was a jerk. I'd focus on plot primarily and visuals second. The thing is, new players will have a much more difficult appreciating a pretty looking level than they will a plot. Simply because they don't know the parameters of the engine and the work involved. But it's pretty easy to see the work involved in a plot line. Great idea RangerZero. If you need a hand drop me a line, I'd love to test/give feedback/help out in anyway I can. Maybe even build if CY ever comes out. 2009-03-02 14:58:00

If the level is good looking, I don't really care about the challenge ratio. I often just love running through some of the easier levels in SP just for inspiration and because they look cool.2009-03-02 15:01:00

Look for the levels made by AntonioLadrillo, he has a whole bunch of levels which all have this adorable, a little childish design you may be looking for and the best part is that he has nailed the difficulty on all the levels, they are all extremely fun to play at the same time as they are a little challenging. They are really worth checking out, especially if you plan to make something similar to his levels.2009-03-02 15:18:00

Nice. I should add that the level won't take itself seriously. I made a character with that heart shaped object with hair... lol. The guy really is ugly and he will talk with the player in the level. (gonna be your helper).

Swings are good "obstacles" for easy levels. They tend to not be very difficult but are quite fun. Take a look at the monkeys in the first Savanna level for inspiration.2009-03-02 22:58:00

The level won't be all that long. My girlfriend will be the fool proof tester for it. I'll need to entertain her until the end.

Right now I have a save besides each place it's possible to die and there's not too many places you can die (and they are more toward the end).
I have layer jumps, hanging, moving platforms (easy), slides and i'm going to even try a ceiling hang part. It won't be possible to die in it though. I will put a very fast conveyor belt under it so if ever the player is discouraged he will be able to jump crazy and cross the section by the conveyor belt.

Each part will have "heart boxes" openable by a grabable door in order to reward your success at every section.

I will put some pics and more details here in the coming weeks. I wonder if somebody would like to participate into making some plot for that level at some point? Something really basic simple but interesting. I don't like stories in a platformer game but whatever, I might try.

Lots of switches, even ones placed right infront of a door, to give them a sense of acomplishment?2009-03-07 21:19:00

Actually, i think he might be on to something there. I would say a lot of lights, that light up when something is activated, and sound effects. some simple platforming, ala kirbie's dreamland and simple, but cute enemies. also, some sort of cart ride through a mystical looking tunnel.

anyway, just a few ideas...

This I will definetely do it. You inspired me some cools things right there!

Hmm, what I am aiming at is more than just an easy level. I want a level for a beginner. I want some new gamer that plays LBP to be able to do it. In short, my girlfriend needs to be able to do it and like it. LOL

Also, I meant use switches where ever possible. Have a door? just put a switch in front of it on the back plane, maybe raised a bit. People will be like "OMFG!!11!! I figured it out" where as before they would be bored.

Also, plaster on camera zones. People like those.

I agree when people say visuals will be everything in this case.

I'm not just a casual gamer but i sure do enjoy a highly-polished level.:hero:

This sounds like ZOOL.

If the level is short is there any need for a story? Maybe you could use The Gardens as your prototype in this respect, there wasn't any story, you were being introduced to the different gaming mechanics used in each level.

Well, so far there's not story and I feel good about that fact. I even the casual player is THAT interested in a plot to begin with.

I think SOME sort of objective gives them extra fervor to complete a level, even multiple times. Make something simple, but interesting, like "Destroy the ALIEN STARSHIP before EARTH is ALIEN TOAST" or something like that. No story at all normally limits a level to one play for me.2009-03-09 23:17:00

The level is finished!

I'm gonna launch it in the next couple of days. I'm going to test the thing out a tad more to be sure everything rocks.

It went pretty well and I think the level is nice. It's definetely doable for a LBP beginner and it's also fun. I did put a bunch of secrets for experimented players to find.

I finally uploaded pics. I will have better ones in the Level Showcase thread for the level. Right now I don't have batteries for my camera so in-game pics will do for now.
