Bunkum Lagoon was a bit of a mish-mash?

Archive: 7 posts

So I was playing some levels from Bunkum Lagoon yesterday and it occured to me, the design is very inconsistent and feels to me like they had a few extra themes they wanted to put in the game but didn't have time to expand on; what was the beast we went into in Belly of the Beast? Who was this Masque Maker? Why were we in a Lagoon at the centre of the planet? The themes just seemed mishmashed to me, more so than the other differences in theme from Manglewood and the Ziggurat. The design was beautiful, though, and Belly of the Beast reminded me of the T-Rex's stomach level from Sackboy's Prehistoric Moves.2014-12-04 20:03:00

I honestly get the feeling that the game was rushed to a conclusion. While the levels were good, indeed the thematic seemed relatively missmatched, and it's also, perhaps significant that there were only two levels here, as opposed to three in other hubs. Indeed it seems as if Bunkem lagoon wasn't given quite the care and attention as the other two books.

It makes me wonder if they originally had a longer story-mode planned. Even the beta suggests that may have been so, with the 8 slot pocket. Perhaps there were to be more levels with more themes, but in the end they just put together what they had completed into the final world.

Purely speculation though, we'll probably never know.

They were movie references, I think. Since Manglewood is supposed to be Hollywood, get it....2014-12-05 01:17:00

I think the theme was fishing village meets marionettes with a touch of cloud city to suit the introduction of Swoop. The way Manglewood was swamp meets Hollywood. I think juxtaposing things not normally found together is a great way to come up with new theme flavors and fits well with the eclectic style of LBP. I myself really liked it. Bunkum Lagoon did seem a bit thin on content compared to the prior worlds, but what was there was all top notch IMO. And we had the final boss battle level there to sort of balance things out.

What i especially appreciate about LBP3 story was that every level felt like it had something very unique to offer in terms of game play, to a greater degree than I recall from prior LBP titles, and most levels had a unique theme unto themselves. A lot of those sub themes didn't wholly connect to the rest of the story, but that's a whimsical freedom that's been the LBP norm from the beginning.

I do wonder why Newton had the King and Queen and other prior cast members enslaved in his fortressy thing. Perhaps the story originally took place on craft world again? Or maybe they just needed easy touch points to convey his evil plan coming together. Either way that evil hat factory in the fortress background was amazing!

I loved that they mashed themes together. It's basically a crossover with themes. And who doesn't like crossovers?! Ok, some crossover ideas are silly, but still.

I don't recall him having captured them, just that he made the robots that looked like the King, Queen, and Bunny.

Manglewood is inspired by holliwood
Ziggurat is inspired by Russia
And Bunkum lagoon? The lagoon is inspired by the fantastic Italian city, Venice! Everything points to Venice (buildings, bell towers, sea, etc...) and his Carnival (masks, fireworks, feathers, and a myriad of colors)

But i'm not sure if this festival is celebrated all over the world, so here's some Venice Carnival pics:

the same Pinky is a porcelain puppet dressed with typical clothes of the carnival

Regarding the level "belly of the beast" I think that is inspierd by the typical Italian tale of Pinocchio (the walt disney's movie is based on the book of thr Italian writer Carlo Collodi), I think it is clear, the whale, puppets, etc...
Furthermore this sticker "il teatro delle marionette" is in Italian, and translated means "the puppet theater"

I honestly think that "bunkum laggon" is the best of the proposed theme of LBP3

Belly of the Beast and Masque Maker's Tower both had puppetry themes. There were characters in the background of each level that were attached by strings or moved in a marionette sort of way. Masque Maker's Tower is my favorite level in the game because I love the look of Venetian masks. I think Art-in-Heart explained it well.2014-12-15 04:58:00
