Relative gravity level

Archive: 7 posts

I have the basic system designed to make a character have relative gravity and controls. Essentially, all surfaces are attractors, and the camera rotates to follow the character's perspective.

I hijack the controls and reroute them to reflect the direction you face, since if the camera rotates I need to rotate the controls too.

That works great and I'm pretty happy with that. Anyone know what would be a good theme for a level to make this system make sense in the game? One key to this is the sense of no up. After running up walls and roofs for a bit you quickly lose your sense of where up and down are.

Interesting idea. By theme, do you mean you're wanting to know the story/background behind the mechanic or are you asking which level background theme to use?2014-12-02 23:51:00

Looking for a theme for the level itself, not the background.

IE story idea, what to design it like, I was going with just some standard bendy platforming but I think my level could use some cool flavoring, some kind of story to go with it.

Not asking for you guys to write a script for me, just some ideas to bounce around about a level where you, the main character, have the ability to walk up all the walls and have relative gravity.

Hmm... What kind of settings do you like to do?

This mechanic can work in a lot of themes.

I was thinking maybe something sci fi or abstract, I was messing around with the outline materials and that provided some neat effects, but I have to keep in mind the fact my camera system might make people motion sick if I have too many bright lights.

Maybe a space station or something?

What about something like the Distortion World from Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum? A place just slightly outside of reality where physics starts to fall apart?2014-12-03 08:41:00

Personally, I say use the mechanic in an unexpected scene. Space and sci-fi would be obvious, but then again, people adore familiarity.

You could go underwater, or have some kind of magnetism machine guy, or give some weird reason why he can do what he does; like, he's made of an aura that keeps him alive only if he is touching something else, or a specific something.

Go Crank, and he has to constantly be taking in a steady current of electricity.

Could make it into a puzzle level as well.

If you choose space, have him going around and pressing buttons that change the gravity of a large wrecked ship, or some ship/ancient alien place. Then, after enough button pressing, he finds/gets a device that lets him change his/her gravity.
