Not sure how to start?

Archive: 7 posts

Hi,
I want to make a level like a classic arcade game of the early 80's.

I'm just staring at create mode and I don't have a single clue how to begin. I have been doing the tutorials and I'm now onto the video ones but I've seen nothing that will get me started on making an arcade game.

I'm talking about something like asteroids, space invaders or the like.

I really have no idea how to even begin such a task. ..if it's even possible?

It's possible to do those kind of games, but to pull it off you need to be pretty skilled at logic and the rest of the tools lbp has to offer. As a beginner you might be biting off more than you can chew with this. I'd begin by playing around with the tools by building small things. Also go to the tutorial section and start watching those.. best of luck to ya!

Thanks, I am going through the tutorials but I've seen nothing yet that will allow me to make something like that.2014-12-01 15:04:00

As Smasher said, doing smaller easier objects and logic at first will help quite a bit in getting your skills up to speed. Attempting something much more complicated now is just asking for problems.2014-12-01 16:14:00

I'm actually sitting down to draw out a level for a game I am working on now, so I will try to describe my process a little.

With any level like this, there's likely going to be a lot of logic that needs to work together, so first thing to do is grab a piece of paper and write out a plan. Start by writing what you want the game to do. Then break everything down into smaller tasks. Even doing some quick sketches of things helps. They don't have to be good sketches; something as simple as a few circles with arrows to indicate movement can be enough.

Take Space Invaders for example:

You would need a scoring system of some sort, lives, the player ship, projectiles, enemies, and several levels.

Then you take those parts and break them down into what you would need.

For your enemies, you will need some movement. You'll need a way for them to detect being hit so they can explode. Do you want to make them 3D or flat 8 bit? If flat, will you use Holo, Neon, or sticker panel? How will you handle the death/movement animations?

Now you just pick one of those much smaller tasks and start there. Maybe you would start by building the enemies and animations, or maybe you start with making a way to detect hits. Whatever you choose, start simple and build on it.

It sounds complicated, but if you start with a plan and several small tasks, it gets a lot easier. Once you start breaking it all down it goes pretty quickly because now you're dealing with one thing at a time rather than trying to tackle the whole idea at once. With levels containing a lot of logic this is really important because it can be overwhelming.

Hope that helped.
