Let's Get Ready To RUMBLE!!!

Archive: 12 posts

I was surprised that they didn't have a "Rumble" tool that allows creators to manipulate the vibration of the DualShock controller.

Since I don't use any of the trademark characters, I can't manipulate vibration by placing them next to hazards, achieving the effect of a rumble. Since you're in no danger when you're in a controlinator through the game, in my projects at least.

The tool should be tweekable scaled by strength, whether it affects only the right side, the left side or both sides of the controller. Scaled from 0%-100%, on/off, speed scale, strength scale, length of vibration etc.

I can see this being applied to a shmup game where you defeat a boss, causing a huge explosion and shockwave, your controller would vibrate from the effect.

in the game FEZ you have to solve many riddles some of them are button combinations you need to press at certain places, one of them had the controller vibrate on the right and on the left side in a certain pattern. so you knew in what order you had to press the R1 and L1 buttons for the code. i guess what would be cool to use in LBP too. agreed.2014-11-30 04:37:00

This would be a great feature since rumble is a neat way to communicate feeling from the game. Like smellovision!2014-11-30 11:24:00

I suggest for the addition of a rumble tweaker. It's function would be to make the controller vibrate when activated, and would have digital input to control vibration intensity. It would have an affected range, where if sackboy is inside the range then that player's controller will vibrate. This will help add depth to our levels by adding another element to engage our players. I could imagine using it for a level where you are trapped in a falling building and you can use the rumble tweaker to vibrate the controller to warn players that the floor is about it give in.

One more suggestion while I'm at it: add a lifetime option for fall-apart destroyers, that way you can have an object fall apart and still have its rubble present for a while until it goes away. Add the option to make the pieces de physicalised like the shardinator.

Let's try and get these suggestions implemented!

The first suggestion is actually pretty neat, but I wonder how much vibration a controller can handle without it destroying itself, because people could set it to infinite 2014-12-07 20:20:00

I don't know what you mean by setting it to infinite but thanks .2014-12-08 01:57:00

What I mean by infinite is that you could set the duration of the vibration to maybe five hours and then have it go around like a loop. And there you have it, an infinite vibration on your controller, that never stops unless you turn off the game.2014-12-08 13:46:00

Yep, this would be handy. Only drawback being there would be times when you would feel the rumble and start jumping to avoid some non-existant hazard, but no big deal.2014-12-08 14:26:00

That would be AWESOME! Someone at Sumo Digital should be ashamed they didn't come up with the idea.
