It's always extremely difficult for me to pick my top five or ten favorite films, but I guessed I'd probably say:

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
2. Memento
3. Lord of the Rings
4. Raiders of the Lost Ark
5. The Dark Knight

I'm positive
I watch that film back now and still gaze in awe at the graphics.
For a 10 year old film, the graphics are still high up there

So as long as film looks pretty, it doesn't matter about story, acting or direction? =P

Anyway, like mrsupercomputer said, it's hard to pin down a definitive list, but here's a few that spring to mind, in no particular order:

Reservoir Dogs, Shaun of the Dead, Animal Crackers, The Royal Tenenbaums, Terminator 2

Don't bother, watch The Omega Man instead. As much as I like Will Smiths, he's no Charlton Heston.

Yeah putting down an actual list of 5 is hard. Mine would be something like this...

1. Seven Samurai
2. Pulp Fiction
3. The Big Lebowski
4. Dead Man's Shoes
5. Dark Knight

But gyahhh! Where do I put Ikiru, Akira, Requiem for a Dream, The Life of Brian, Magnolia, Citizen Kane, This is England, Momento, Taxi Driver, Rashomon, Bladerunner, Wall-E, Aliens, The Royal Tennenbaums, Clerks, Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies, Waltz with Bashir, Amelie, Snake in June, Fight Club? Gyahhhh!

The more I think the more I remember! Look what you've done!

Gonin
The Third Man
The Incredibles
The Devil's Backbone

In no particular order - but 5 isn't even enough to pick from each genre, so the list would probably change daily according to mood.

I'm not really mainstream.... It was popular back in the mid 80's. It kicked off virtually EVERY Canadian stereotype that exists today. VERY funny. Of course, on the other hand - you could end up watching it and think I'm a moron... Not everyone thinks beer, hockey, toques, and stereotypical Canadian-speak are funny.

I gather this inspired your Jaques level? lol. I personally have not seen the movie but being a Canadian I will now have to check it out

I almost feel weird putting down a top 5 because I feel like a top 5 films is almost a personal question. "What events in your childhood shaped you?" "Who are you REALLY, on the INSIDE?"

That being said, here's a smattering. I can't bear to pick 5 so I have to pick 6, and list some runner-ups.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Brazil
City Lights (Chaplin)
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Fountain
Koyaanisqatsi

Hard to make a list without Alien, Aliens, or T2. Hard to do one without Godfather II. Or Solaris, or Blade Runner, or Blue Velvet, or Dr. Strangelove, or Schindler's List, or Star Wars, or A Clockwork Orange, or Badlands, or Brokeback Mountain, or Half Nelson, or Taxi Driver, or There Will Be Blood. I can't really say why I chose the ones I did, except that maybe they're closer to my own style of filmmaking than many of the others, or maybe because they spoke to me so privately when I saw them. But I can safely and proudly look at those movies and say that they are amongst my absolute all-time favorites.

1.Braveheart*
2.Shawshank Redemption
3.Boondock Saints
4.Lock Stock and Two smoking barrels
5.Casino Royale**

*The Patriot can be subbed here, same movie different country
**This is a tough choice because Return of the Jedi used to be here - and Quantum of Solace might be better, it's the test of time thing - which is why Casino Royale might be too soon still to be here... just like the two batman movies, also amazing.

Hard to whittle down to 5 , but in order of favoritism

1] JAWS - this movie has everything, great script, brilliant acting, suspense, humor ...the works ,the only thing that ages it is the mayors jacket
2] One Flew over the Cuckoos nest - A classic, funny and sad at the same time, the inmates are brilliant [danny de vito as a mental patient LOL] and J.Nickelsons best.
3]LOTR Trilogy - Nothing really need to be said about these, only that I wonder if certain portions will be redone for Blueray release as it's aged technically.
4] Aliens - I've lost count of how many times I've watched this, can't wait for a remastered Blueray release of this.
5] Close Encounters of a third kind - Brilliant special effects from Douglas Trumbell that haven't aged, a classic ,watch the remastered Blueray release of this,it's a special kind of magic .

A few other favorites
O brother where out thou
The life of Brian
Monty Python & the Holy grail
In Bruges
