Top-Down Head Twitching

Archive: 16 posts

Hey guys,

Right now I'm having some issues with my top-down sackbot player's head twitching oddly when stopping or changing directions. I turned off controller head tilt, so it's not that. I've turned off all look-ats, so it's not that. I've tried messing with animation blending, and it doesn't seem to be that either.

I've seen the same twitching in some LBP3 top-down or 3d movement levels.

Anyone have any ideas on a solution for this?

Either it's a glitch, or there may be something wrong with the animations. Have you turned off the animations to see if the head still twitched?2014-11-27 10:20:00

Yeah, it still does. I've tried multiple methods of rotation as well, and it twitches the same.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bug. Baaah.

This could be happening because the controlinator you have on the sackbot has the "Override Sackbot" option set to "Yes", which in turn allows you to move your controller and turn the sackbots head (As you know, the sixaxis tilts the player's head, this happens with sackbots too) and since your sackbot is at an odd rotation for the top down effect, this head turning just looks really bad. So what you could do is just simply turn that option of "Off"2014-11-27 16:16:00

Same issue, showed with video. I know what you're talking about. No override Sackbot is not turned on, that's a bit of a beginners mistake. We're talking about global sackbot orientation. The sackbot keeps it's notion of up regardless of rotation, we're curious if there is a way to work around it.

The closest I've gotten to fixing it, is actually using the head animations, I believe it's the third on the list under that.
Sackboy animations > Head animations > Whatever the third one is.
Set two angle sensors, for when the player is facing either left or right (By global orientation) Wire those into whatever that third animation is.
Set the timing on it so it isn't a range like 42-45 but rather more like 53-53. So both start and end are the same. Then really just set both sides.
Yeah it looks a little weird :/ I imagine with some tweaking it can look right however. :star:

There's a top down story level that runs like a dream so clearly it's possible. I wonder, what animation type have you got it set too? If you set it to Dr. Herbert Higginbotham and put in on REC, it stops the head wobbling. Perhaps with a more stable head, the problem will go? Using this method also leads to smoother animations too.2014-11-27 20:29:00

It's not possible to fix it with logic. It still ocuurs in the top down story level when the character rotates on certain angles.2014-11-27 20:40:00

I never noticed. Is it being worked on or is it likely to be a permanent problem? Obviously you have more pressing things to be working on at the moment but it would be nice for this to look as intended (at some point in the not too busy future).

Nope not a bug as I said Global Sackbot Orientation, the sackbot's head will always tilt in the direction of global up. As for the story mode, I assume since they used big toggle, and possibly used funny head size, it was hardly noticeable.

A nice feature would be a sackbot option labelled (Top Down) which negated this.

Thanks all for the thoughts. I'll try your suggestions Gribble. Like someone else said, I believe the story top-down twitching is much less noticeable because it's toggle.

I really do hope they look into this. Really hurts the level ideas I've been mulling over for a long time.

Completely know how you feel. I'm avoiding creating actually, as much as I want to start creating, there seems to be a million things stopping me with their new tools and the bugs. I'd map out my levels, and design them before working on my characters. :/ It sucks, but it's probably your best bet.

Hey guys,

I finally found a solution to this issue. I'll probably post a tutorial on it soon if nobody else has.
