Animal Zoo! - adventure/platformer (gots photos)

Archive: 49 posts

This is my first attempt at an adventure level, but I've made lots of experimental levels as I was learning the ins and outs of create mode.

This took me about a month on and off to make. Its short but sweet with lots to discover!

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h230/Wiggles2000/LBP%20Central/APhoto_6.jpg

My idea behind this was that its up to the player to explore and discover the Zoo. You can chat with all the animals, and helping them out will earn you points etc.

Its packed full of twisted animals, all of which aren't the slightest bit happy with the state of the Zoo....

Take the to the drain pipes by emptying the penguin tank

This Polar Bear is stressed out and its up to you to give him a Nicotine Patch sticker to solve his problems^^
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h230/Wiggles2000/LBP%20Central/APhoto_30.jpg

Anywho, lots more mental animals, so I don't wanna spoil it for ye.

I'll do some F4F's, whoevers interested!

Gotta say that the amount of time you put into the level is quite evident in it's amount of polish. There's really not much of anything that I have complaints about.

- When you walk into the zoo the gate spins the opposite way that it should if you were pushing it while walking under it like you are.

- Other then that I really like all of the characters that you created. The sloth was probably my favorite, but they were all pretty neat.

- Extra little details that you added into the level really bring it 'to life'. For instance, the top of the cage where the monkeys broke out was really well done and looked like a convincing tearing through of the cage.

- The transitions between the sections of the zoo, like into the forest area seemed to work well too.

- Like I said it seems like a pretty polished level to me, wish that there was more I could suggest for improvements but it seemed pretty solid on my run through.

- Oh yeah, I thought the ending of the level was an interesting 'twist' that was something that you don't see too often so I really liked it as well.

also you might wanna make a arrow or something because when you get to the pool, theres a rare chance you would know to climb the hill to the switch.
well for me anyways.

Wow much thanks! Glad you like the Sloth, sloths are the best animals ever.

Ye I thought it was a bit short, and wanted to make an impact with the end^^. Took a fair load of tweaking to get that Zipline monkey to work, plus the failsafe checkpoint incase you fall off and cant finish the level

I'm considering making a part 2 and 3, I have lots of ideas planned out on paper. I'm thinkin a bat cave, under the floorboards of the bat house. Maybe lots of explosives and paintguns for triggering them me thinks. A bit like the mines in story mode!

I think that turnstile thing is based on a real one where you wouldn't be so short as to go under it.... maybe shoulda designed one for sackboys >_>

Oh Corey I'll check yur level out @_@

Wow, a really good level created very well. The amount of time you spent on it has really paid off, I could see all the detail you've put into this level (such as the monkeys cage).

Pros:
-Looks brilliant, lovely use of stickers aswell

-Attention to detail is astounding

-Well, it's actually fun to play too!

-Clever ending

Cons:

- A little too short, but the ending made up for it

Oh thanks for feedback, I'm just wondering if everyone went up to visit dracula?? cause theirs a shortcut lift in the well that by passes this I dunno if it really should be their or not but I made it so you'd most likely go back.2009-02-28 23:04:00

i never took the shortcut, besides that time with you when we went to test everything out.
also
i think you should maybe extend or maybe make like a "safari"
that your in a jeep and you get of at surtain points to do something for an animal like give it food or something, then you get some points for doing that.

because its kinda short if you think about it.

You're right its waay short. But I've actually got a full thermometer, probably cause of the amount of complicated shapes and such. So sometime when I'm not busy I might make Part 22009-02-28 23:29:00

Now time for an official review league review!

Animal Zoo
Author:[b]Pitcard
[b]PSNitcard

Is this level a crafty penguin or a stupid monkey?

Pitcard has spent months creating this zoo themed level, and boy does it show! An excellent example of the polish this level has received would have to be the cage that some monkeys have escaped out of. Has a small chunk just been removed in a square? No, Pitcard has gone the full mile and made it look like the monkeys have broken out. Everything has an extra touch to it in this zoo created by Pitcard , and it really is a pleasure to play.
The humour that is found in this level may not be shared by everyone, but there are some speech bubbles that actually made me laugh out loud. When you combine the witty brilliance with some excellent challenges you can't go wrong. There is very little to complain about in this level.
I won't write much more, because it may well spoil it for you but sufficice to say that it is an amazing level and there is an interesting, hilarious twist at the end. Few problems with a level as fun to play as this one.

Suggestions: The gate at the begining spins the wrong way, should be easy to change though.

Visuals: Beautiful and very well polished. Everything looks great.
Gameplay: Nice, if slightly limited. Not quite enough here to warrant 5 smiles.
Story: Not seemlessly blended, but every animal told a story nonetheless and they were all hilarious.
Smoking Bears Cleverest sticker switch EVER!

Overall:A great level by Pitcard which I beg you all to play, shame it was so short.

Also you should add some point bubbles in the trees or some hard to get places,
adds more of a challenge to try to get that number 1 spot
oh and add some prize bubbles. its kinda plain cuz you can just run through it. but if theres something that catches your eye your gona probably go after it

If you make part 2
I WANT number 1

Just played through it. Very fun level.

One problem I ran into was after i brought the hotdog to the penguin it was pretty difficult to figure out what to do next, and even when i figure out i needed to jump on the penguins back it was hard to do.

The smoking polar bear was genius and the entrance into his cage was even better!
I dont know if alot of people will figure out how to get out of there though. Also, I happened to go left first into the polar bears cage before dracula, so i didnt have the patch he refers to, and you cant go back through the toilet so I ended up jumping out of the cage, falling down the well and then going to dracula and doing it the right way,

The monkeys were great too. I think the level got better the more you got into it.

4/5 stars. Would be 5, I think if it were a little more clear as to what to do. Great job though!

First of all thanks Coxy for the review, if enough people heart it I'd definitely make a Part 2, cause I'm surprised people enjoyed it so much

Good idea Philip, if I put a good few bubbles in it'll give the player some direction and incentive to explore everything.

Apelles, what you said is really helpful. I'll see if I can make a few changes, but I suppose the Well has more of a purpose if they don't see Dracula but hear the Polar Bear talkin about him. Maybe i'll just change his dialog a bit so he's askin IF you have a sticker.

Ok, I just played this... This was actually a VERY enjoyable level with fantastic and beautiful content.

If I could throw in my 2 cents (I played the level before reading ANY of the reviews)... my PERSONAL opinion about the sticker, the vampire, and the polar bear... do you REALLY need to make it so obvious to have the bear ask if you have a sticker? I think it's absolutely perfect the was it is. Why? You are crawling through the sewer and come across 3 paths.... who wouldn't want to explore? I first took the bear path, then I said "hey, I wonder where those others lead"... and so on. If people explore a little, why not give them the extra points? When you start making things too obvious, I think it takes away a little.

Back to the game:

You obviously put a lot of time into this. I know you hear people compare levels all the time to MM's levels. Now, I'm not super particuler to MM's levels - I like to see people putting their own style into games. However - I gotta say this is one level that could ACTUALLY be from MM. The animal creations are fantastic, your ability to not make platforming difficult (even in tight jumping quarters, jumping and landing on floors acted as expected), and the content - all great stuff.

Keep up the good work - I hope this level gets a lot of attention.

By the way, I would love if you checked out Splat Invaders II: The Caverns of Splat (PSN CuzFeeshe) if you get a chance.

Yeah, or maybe somehow discretely force the player to go dracula's way first. maybe a dissolve blocking the left way until you enter dracula's lair...

Make sure it's done in a way that the player doesnt notice though.

(BTW add me on psn and give my levels a try if you can)

Thanks a million CCubbage. You've made some good points. My original idea was to have lots to explore and you're right, people should get awarded for exploring. My original dialog for Mr polar bear was probably funnier, something about getting a sink installed to go with the toilet that he had, so he didn't mention the sticker at all, but i was worried players might not get to see that part or not pay attention to dracula.... who likes him anyway >_>

also I intended it to be longer but considering the amount of custom shapes and stuff i ran out of thermometer space.. ouch. I'll probably make another one though!

I'm pretty sure I've played some of your splat saga games. I'll give the caverns one another go and tellz ye whatz i thinkz

KK Appeles, I'll add ye when I'm on. You can try out my other experiments too

Just played through your level. This has to have been one of the few levels I have played that was not difficult, but highly enjoyable.

The only point I would have to make would be with finding dracula and the sticker (I also went to the bear, droped down the well and came back around) and with the gate at the beggining.

Other than these two points, I have no other critique.

My roomate also played your level at my behest.

He grabbed the hot dog first, and dragged it to the penguins. He had not seen me play, but just the way he is, he did so. As such the diolage was a bit out of order for him. Not sure on how to fix this, perhaps a proximity switch that does not allow you to go up to the hot dog to grab it untill you have been requested to do so.

He also had trouble with figuring out where to go after the penguins. He flounded a bit, and I had to tell him what to do, or he never would have fiqured it out. Wierd, but for some reason his mind works that way. My other roomate and myself had no problem, but this seemed to throw him for a bit of a loop.

He also missed dracula, but went around and got the sticker. I believe this part is fine since the points down the well are incentive enough to go that way, and if people are curious, they will naturaly find him.

The monkey switch with the apples was a wonderful idea and quite enjoyable.

And the sudden ending was also very enjoyable. Not to mention to objects floating around with you.

I would say that this level is one of the best i have seen. Keep up the great work

Writing on ps3 browser so keepin it breif

Glad you enjoyed it, I always thought it was too short but I guess if you guys are all up for exploring everything, it'll do grand

That hotdog thing I've actually thought through, if you dont grab it, the penguin tells u to get one... but if you grab it straight away, te magic mouth (stuck to a bit of hidden disolve) dissapears

Ye thanks also for tellin me all the different ways yur friends played it. Gives me lots of ideas on how I should adjust it, i'll probably change the bears dialog first though. maybe some kinda hint to jump on the penguin too...

If anyone wants feedback on their levels just ask, cause the feedback i've got so far is really quality and feedback between creators is the best way to raise the standard.

Thanked your post for making such an awesome level.

Cheers Olit, I've thoroughly enjoyed making the level, and its all the sweeter when other people can enjoy it too

I've updated a fair few of the issues you lot have suggested on this thread.

-made polar bear's dialog more fresh, he doesn't ask you to use the sticker, he just wishes he could quit the smokes >_>

-put in a sign at the penguin place that gives a hint about actually climbin the mountain

-put in new score bubbles all along the monkey swings

-added a few prizes, made to put in your own levels if you want, you guys will have to find them.

My husband and I played this last night, and i thought it was very cute. ^_^ This is the best Zoo themed level I've seen so far (not like I've seen many, but I did see some really scary ones back in november when I first got the game)

my husband hearted it. Good work!

Ahhh Kappa, I'm sure i've played all your levels at some point! Cause they're probably some of the funnest levels going. Crystal Cave I'd say is the best level I've played, ever...
I was just really long but full of fresh humour, clever ideas and perfectly pitched pacing.

Glad you liked my level though, I really wanted to do a level full of daft animals, so I checked if people had made zoo ones, and I can see where you're coming from.... scary suff >_>

Also I saw you do comics. I'm big into manga and stuff, and I'm definitely doing something art related after school. Check my artwork album!

I'll check out your work as soon as I'm able to (probably after work!), but my lunch break is over now and I must get back to work!! (i said work a lot in that sentence. WORK!)

Thanks for the kind words on our levels. Crystal Cave was really a lot of work, and I'm very happy that people are enjoying it!

Just played this level and it's very fun.

Pros:
Quite funny
Looks great
Very original
Has a fantastic ending

Cons:
Too short
Sometimes it's difficult to know what to do
Not much platforming

Suggestions:
Add some explanation where needed
If possible, extend the level and add a challenging platforming section

5 stars and a heart for you.

I'm trying your level, and i will write feedback while i'm playing.
Oh, i'm entering the Zooooo... The guard is sleeping...And...
Lol, the Hot Dogs Seller! "Get'em while they're dogs!..I mean Hot" xDD :hero:

I'm in the Penguin Area! Very cool! Nice the pool Mmm...They want an hot dog...I must find it!
Ahah, i stole the hot dog! Fine, now i helped the penguins with their pool! But i hear the glass sound when the pieces fall
I go underground...There is a double way! Mmm... I want the Scenic Route!
What? Dracula not here? xD
Aaargh! Is Dracula!! But i can take all the prizes! A nicotine thing? Lol xD

great, i'm entered in the cage of a bear from the WC. And he thinks i'm his breakfast xDD Hey! You're smoking! ?__? Don't smoke my friend!
Yeah! I saved him! Wow! How many bubbles! All form the WC!
This level is very funny!
Now i'm entering in the Jungle Zone! The grapich is wellmade, in the Zoo you pass trough many "ambientations".
Yeee, Monkey!! Ohh, a tree with lots of fruit!
Ahah, grabbing the fruit, they fall little fruits with points bubbles! Yee, i won Smoking Bear and penguin! I found many funny and coll ideas in this level, and it's the begginning!
Oh, a cage full of slots! The space is to little! They need my help! Oh no, the other slots are escaped! Pursuit Time! "No Swimming. And certainly no swinging" XDD Gojng up the tree... Ah! The slots! I must grab to something!
...OMG XD :hero: The slots are screaming freedom They're poses are very funny XD
Oh! A mokeny helps me to run away fromt he zoo!
I hang to a red animal!! FREEEDOOOM! Wait, the crocodile! Wait! WAIIT!
... too late

Level ended: i helped an hungry penguin, a smoking bear, i found Dracula ( ) , i feed a mokey and tryied to save the slots! Then, i was ate by a crocodile
Overall: the gameplay of the level was simple but very funny, lot of funny texts, the last part with the swing with the mokey was very cool, but maybe the bolts are too "soft", try to switch normal bolts with the "waving" boltas (i have the italian game, so i don't know the real name of that type of bolts).
Anyway, i had a lot of fun playing this level, maybe it's a little short.
5/5 stars and hearted

Hey man. I played this last night, here are some thoughts:

I have to begin by saying I love the Zoo. When I was a kid we a Season's Pass to the Toronto Zoo (the biggest in the world FYI) and my mom and dad took me there throughout the year, winter and summer. In other words, I was already inclined to like your level lol.

I am immediately grabbed by the vibrancy and color of the level. Everything seems to be popping off the screen. I am a custom content zealot and you have so many wonderful creations here. The penguins are stout and plump and colored perfectly. The monkey's are big lanky boys like look kind of goofy. Your polar bear is the funniest creature I have seen in LBP. He looks haggard and lazy and his speech bubbles kept me entertained. All of your characters have such great personality so props on the writing side of things.

I really enjoyed the set pieces you had. The penguins pool looks fantastic and I thought the material selection was perfect. Your trees in the jungle section were very original and the decision to go with that pixel sticker was definitely something different.

I really liked the way you implemented the platforming into the environments. Climbing the rocks in the pool, travelling through the sewers, swinging from monkey's etc, all of it made sense in the context of your story and environment so good job.

Suggestions:

- You have so much wonderful custom content and I think it would be great if you gave the same treatment to your lettering. Not critical by any means but I personally feel things like tha add to the overall polish.

- When swinging from the monkey's I thought the cam angle made it a bit tricky but if no one else had any problems here then leave it as is.

- The monkey that tellys you to grab his hand, I had a lot of trouble grabbing it lol. I kept trying to jump on it and I kept falling into the gas below. What was I doing wrong?

Overall a really great level that I had a lot of fun with. 5 stars and hearted. Please check out my new level Pulse if you get a chance and leave some thoughts on my thread. Thanks and I look forward to your next creation.

also this is just a bug when your playing online.
you know when you get to the monkey part then you slide down.

could you like make it so that everyone is able to climb aboard because when you play online one guys grabs on and we all die

Sorry I'm only getting back to this now... I was on ps3 browser but couldn't be arsed replying on ps3...

Cheers for the feedback OCK, I've played a couple of your levels and will give you some feedback in return soon.

I have to begin by saying I love the Zoo. When I was a kid we a Season's Pass to the Toronto Zoo (the biggest in the world FYI) and my mom and dad took me there throughout the year, winter and summer. In other words, I was already inclined to like your level lol.

I've had some really cool memories and some really horrible memories from visiting different Zoos. So I wanted to create a Zoo where the animals and their personality is what really shines through... whereas the actual zoo is the really run down and depressing.

Also I appreciate all the comments on the design and everything, I enjoyed creating the different animals and making each of them unique.

Well I didn't think the level was a challenge at all up until that point... cause there weren't any threats. It was just about exploration, so I wanted to create a bit of action at the end. Also the camera is at that angle really to show the canopy rocking back and forth, tried to give the jungle a bit more life. ^^

The thing about the Hand grab monkey though... I really should fix this because its right before the next checkpoint and having to swing through the monkeys again would be frustrating. The easiest way to catch his hand is to jump into it and grab. This way you're cupped inside his hand and grabbing on. I'll probably just make his entire hand out of grabable stuff.

also this is just a bug when your playing online.
you know when you get to the monkey part then you slide down.

could you like make it so that everyone is able to climb aboard because when you play online one guys grabs on and we all die
Hehe bros over pros Philip

Ye I kinda wish everyone could grab on before it went but I don't see an easy way of doing this... The thing I did do was, I had a Include all proximity sensor next to the branch, so it tilts over when everyones near, only then can they make the jump to the monkey.

I think its still kinda funny though the way one gets greedy and grabs it, and everyone else dies!!

I've just read through the thread, and after seeing recommendations from OCK and Kappa, who's level I love, I thought I'd give it a try

+ Excellent look, its filled with little details. All the materials fit perfectly.
+ Brilliant characters, all made by yourself, they look great
+ Nice little tasks to perform for all the animals, both for reward and progress in the game.
+ Lol at the smoking polar bear
+ Excellent mechanics, I love the way everything works
+ The dialogue is great
+ It has loads and loads of character. Swinging on the baboons backsides made me smile. In fact, all of the level brought a smile to my face
+ Loved the ending, excellent work.
+ I had a replay and found dracula

I could find anything to fault, other than the length, but I read above you're at bursting point with the thermo, I can see why with the detail and shapes you used

***** and hearted.

Cheers for feedback Grantos! I'll give your levels a shot, plus feedback if I get around to it.

Just yesterday, my level climbed up to page 1 of cool levels.... so I couldn't really ask for more

I also noticed about 1/4 of the comments are people saying that they couldn't get past the penguins or the polar bear.... but they all said that they really wanted to play it. I've already put a sign in which says "don't climb the rocks OR the penguins" as a really sarcastic hint... But i dunno if its enough, or maybe its just all the kids who are commenting cause they've got a 3 second attention span ">_>

Its really great when a level finally pulls through, I'll definitely make another:arg:

If anyones interested in my new Project "Custom Music Generator" (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=9443) just throwing it out there cause its still fresh

hip fresh and happening

also if you have the msg level pack with the paintator you could make like monkeys hidden through the level and you have to shoot them, so if you miss some they dont let you progress
i got this idea from a level called "the farm" which made go through a farm like envirorment then you shoot the sheep and if you miss one at the end it tells you what number it is and a picture of where it is hidden then you have to go back and find it.

i thought it was a cool idea instead of just running through the level.

I thought it was really really great. This level just made my day.
(out of 5) ...keywords in CAPS

Visuals = + + + + +
Everything was POLISHED to PERFECTION. Absolutely LOVED this level. It was realistic, PRETTY, NO FLAWS. And the subtle clever humerous little HINTS it gives you like DRACULA is definately not this way, and No Climbing on the PENGUINS.

Gameplay = + + + +
GOOD, if a little unclear. But im just picky. ... And the NICOTINE PATCH on the POLAR BEAR.

Story = + + + +
EXCELLENT. Liked the way each character had their own view and all. And the clever TWIST at the end.

Pros:

Nice Visuals, very pretty
Polished
Nice Twist
Awesome Gameplay

Cons:

Bit Short
Not a lot of points (except in Dracula's lair)
And thats it.

I loved your level, 5 stars and a heart. Keep it up. Made. My. Day. =]

And also, could you play my level Solid Sack? Please. If you dont mind. Thanks.

That was a totally awesome level!!

The good stuff:
- Great level design, ingenious use of "ordinary zoo things" in extraordinary puzzles, really fun platforming sections, and some surprising turn of events.
- Loved the humor! "No! Don't grab it!" HAHAHAHAHA
- Awesome, quality custom content. Loved the penguins, the bear, the monkeys. Really top-notch work.
- Visually, it was beautiful. I wouldn't mind playing it again just to see your beautiful and colorful designs!
- Branching paths are always cool!
- Secret bubbles!

Don't really have many complaints here. Except that maybe it was too short. But I know that's not your fault. There was a lot of detailed stuff in this level, I'm pretty sure your temp's way up there already.

A level I really enjoyed. 5 stars, a heart for the level, and a heart for you as the creator.

If you have time, I would appreciate F4F of any of my two levels: Omaha, or Little Big Tower of Babel. Their links can be found with my sig. Thanks!!

Thank You Milo. I'll play your levels and give some feedback as soon as I can. I actually played your Belly of the Beast level recently! Was excellent. The boss was a huge surprise and actually played really nicely as a boss Plus I loved all the moving organs and innards of the great whale, very organic and realistic.2009-03-10 22:06:00

Sorry I tooks so long to play it! I won't give loads of feedback, just a lil.

Hilarious! The Hotdog Salesman with Underpants on his head! Ha! (Make the Hotdog talk lol!)

Nice visual style. Everything is simple, clean, almost like MM.

I love the humor! "The dracula is not this way" and the nicotine bear were my favourites.

The sloth looks the best also, imo.

5 stars, hearted

Thanks dk. Hehe you're the first person to notice what the chef's wearing for a hat!

It'll be a long time from now for Part 2... Not untill the summer really. If I started now I'd be failing all my exams O_o

I really liked this level... Got my hearts...

The only thing I would change for it would be to loosen up the camera a bit in the cage where the sloth busted out of maybe, so you could see a direction.. The first time I went into the cage, it was so congested in there that I wasn't sure that I could go up...

Really enjoyed this one... Jealous you have gotten so many plays and hearts - haha

Ye I was worried some people wouldn't see a lot of the little hints in this level. But I wanted to create a level in which the player was free to explore and in which they'd be awarded for their curiosity.

I'm really amazed that I got to page 1 with this, I thought it was too short and the humor was too bizarre.. I hope your dark and stormy night level makes it big on cool levels. It deserves some attention!

I am going to make a run for it soon... When I have an evening to devote to try...

If you don't mind, I will PM you to see if you will help

Great level, although I had a problem with it. At the part where I was swinging across the baboons and monkeys, I accidentally missed one, fell down into the gas, and died. For some reason, I respawned at the end of the level! Any reason for this, or is it a bug?

+ Funny characters
+ Humorous
+ Overall has a feeling of fun to it
+ Druggie sloth was funny
+ I could actually grab the hot dog!

- Like I said earlier, level ended early for me

Overall, a fun level that anyone will enjoy!

Thats a really strange bug :S

I have absolutely no idea as to how that could have happened. I'll have to check it out myself so. Thanks for the headsup, and cheers for feedback!

I'll try my best to play your level.

I loved this level, especially that hotdog guy was funny.

'GET THEM WHILE THEYRE DOGS! I MEAN HOT!'

I laughed really hard at that.

Thanks Recurracy

It puts a smile on my face when people notice things like that! Do you have any levels published that I could play? I probably won't have time for much feedback but I still enjoy the odd level

Okay this is like 2 months later but I played your level and I'm really glad I did. Your animals looked AWESOME and the level was super funny. I especially loved the stressed polar bear and the baboon . The only thing I could say to fix is now that you can, make the bolts invisible (Like the one on the Sloth). Anyways, Good job! 4 starred, hearted, and tagged funny.2009-05-24 16:11:00
