How EXACTLY does one create swinging doors, rolling dice, etc. with decorations?

Archive: 30 posts

I've seen a couple threads on this, but I just want to know what tools to use and how. Basically, I want to implement rolling decorations as well as other similar things in my levels. Thanks in advance!2014-11-24 20:07:00

I wanted to ask this same thing, but I think that in the end there's not a tool that can actually rotate objects around the x-axis or the y-axis (only the z-axis, which is what the usual rotators and bolts do). I noticed that all the itens that rotate in the new way in the story mode are actually decorations. So I supose they used invisible materials alongside decoration rotators. Which is a pretty cheap thing to do, if you ask me. It got me pretty annoyed.2014-11-25 05:04:00

Uh, that's actually my problem, but I didn't ask about it in the main thread. As I desperately search through my tools bag, a 'decoration rotator' is nowhere to be found! Unless you mean rotating disks, but how do those help create swinging doors?2014-11-25 10:50:00

Basically, you put the decoration on the disk and then change its speed. It will either go in only one direction, or with logic, you can make it change directions.

If you want it to swivel, you need to mess with the timing, and use a directional splitter to tell it to spin in one direction for a certain amount of time, then the other direction for a set amount of time; alternating between the directions.

This. It seems limited but all you have to do is play the story levels to see just how powerful it can be. EVERY z-axis rotating object in the game was a decoration and most of us never knew it until we tried to replicate the effect in our levels.

So let me understand, the levels where the floor flips up toward the screen, launching the character forward......those were decorations on a rotator, turned sideways, coupled with a hidden bounce pad?2014-11-25 16:33:00

If you place an Object Animation Tweaker onto a Decoration Spinner you will have much more control over the rotation. You can set the range of rotation and move it with positional control. It may take a bit of practice, but you can achieve some really cool effects with this combination of tools.2014-11-25 21:24:00

Don't forget about combining them with the rails. If you make them ride on rails while spinning, it can make it look like the decoration is spinning with the rail ride. Although you can do this by stickering the Rail Hook, it doesn't work well for bigger designs with the decorations.

This is also a major reason as to why we need to be able to make our own decorations. Not every decoration has the 'point of connection' in a spot that makes it as useful as the shutters and gates. It can be a little annoying if you wanted to make a door using something like a bottle cap decoration.

Can't you just use sticker panel or invisible material to the decoration and use that as the point of connection?
One thing I'm slightly disappointed with is the 'general white shapes' are actually 'decorations' and not 'objects'. I was rather hoping we could make things we could physically interact with.

Once you connect it to that sticker panel or invisible material, you can't rotate it anymore using the Disk. At least, rotate the decoration in the way the Disk spins them.

And there are actually objects that are like the decorations, but are physical. They're in the Objects section under 'Basic Shapes'.

I get it on Friday. I had the beta for a short period of time though. It didn't have the shapes and I didn't play with the disc.

Tis why I don't blame yuh for not knowing.

BUT! Back on topic-

Speaking of the Decoration Basic Shapes I do wonder if they can be stickered. Since I am on the PS3 version and with all these bugs flying around, I can't be for certain whether you can. But IF you can, then some of the basic shapes would be more useful and help in using that Disk.

AND: Regarding the physical basic shapes, I wonder if you are able to use the material changer on them, because at this point, I don't know what is a bug, or what just isn't a feature. lol

I don't think you would be able to. A bug wouldn't completely negate something like that, it would just make it ... well, glitchy.

I mostly say that since I can't sticker anything at the moment on the PS3 version. I mean... If I COULD use stickers at the moment, I'd just take a picture of a material and sticker the basic shapes. But being able to change them into the material would make it quicker and less of a hassle.

The dice are a combination of putting them on decoration spinners but then also gluing the decoration spinner to some sticker panel and having that rotate too, this gives the illusion it is rotating in all directions : )2014-11-26 13:22:00

Decorations can not be stickered and you can not use the material changer on them. If they are hooked to a spinner, then you can change their color if they are a deco that allows that (like the basic shapes)

The basic shape objects CAN be stickered, though it's not very good. No material changer here either, something I hope they consider changing in DLC.

My basic problem with the decorations on the spinner is connecting the decoration. It's very limited. If I could place decoration, and then connect the spinner to IT, then I could precisely align it. At this point, getting the deco's in the right place is a combination of trial and error and luck.

Being able to move and lock the camera helps immensely with this though. The decoration mount is looking pretty interesting as it actually seems to size the decorations without distortion... Well... Unless you WANT distortion.2014-11-26 20:30:00

I was mostly talking about those decorations specifically. Just the basic shapes. It would be nice if those could be stickered. Otherwise, they just seem a little useless. They're just one solid color; no designs or textures on them. They'd work well in a silhouette level though.

I made kind of a demo of this for myself. Maybe I'll publish it, both to show others what I did and to get advice on how to improve it.2014-11-27 15:16:00

You can't use stickers ... at all? Is that PS3 only because I'm sure ! watched someone sticker those shapes on LWP. If it isn't a bug then what the heck were they thinking?

It's a bug. It's been showing up in mainly PS3 versions.

Yeah. It's a bug for mostly PS3 users, a bad one, but I'll live. Just gotta wait for that patch. Heh. Call me Seymour. Such a sad episode.

I CAN sticker in story mode though. But that won't help me much for Create mode.

So I published my demonstration level. It's nothing much, but it demonstrates the concept. I also made it copyable. Let me know if you see better ways to do what I did.

Just an example of making a decoration appear to be a practical object. You can copy this level if you want to play with it...or show me how to do it right.

This does not explain the clown tonge bounce in the lbp3 intro level because that surface had wooden textures... As for the rest like dice and chips can easily be done... Fun to mess around with 2014-12-18 01:13:00

That tongue is a decoration piece. So it would be a few movers and a rotator, with some invisiable material that switches to intangible at the right moment, you could have an invisiable slide as well.2014-12-18 07:56:00
