How to avoid the Yellow Light of Death

Archive: 10 posts

Ok, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section, I wasn't sure where to put it.

So, I noticed quite a lot of peoples were getting the YLOD and I didn't want this to happen to my PS3 because I was saving up about a year for it. So just decided to google "how to avoid the yellow light of death" and it came up with a post on the Playstation forums.....

That's all I have to say, I hope this helps

When in standby mode turn the system off at the back.
Unplug it.
Box it up.
Put it away.
Yellow light avoided.

That's alarmist bullcrap.

Let's me explain in realistic terms. The Yellow light appear when there's a critical hardware malfunction. The most common thing to happen seems to be overheating.

When the system overheat, something somewhere may melt or the motherboard itself might bind or stuff can snap off, rendering the thing malfunctionning.

Now, the way to avoid overheating isn't necessarily the list of crap they are giving there. Best realistic advices would be more like:

- Have the room with some NORMAL temperature and less humid as possible. A normal house should be between 20 and 25 Celcius degrees.

- Do not smoke and cover the machine when you're done playing (when its in standby mode) in order to limit dust fall.

There's tons of people out there to dumb to realise a console might get too hot if they play 6 hours straight. But suggesting a mandatory break each hour is completely ridiculous. You can play 2-3 even 4 hours without a chance of a problem if you're not in a ridiculously hot room.

The advice about not using the back switch is good for your hardware though. I'd also suggest you don't place the PS3 on it's side. This might help the BD drive wear and tear since it needs to fight will less gravity force in order for the eye to move.

Thank you RangerZero for your advice, though the post isn't all ridiculous because some of it is what you said.2009-02-28 18:38:00

Hmm I'm totally guilty of taxing my machine with long gaming sessions, however, I do have plenty of airflow around my machine and try to vacuum the dust out of the vents once a week. I also dust the machine every few days with a microfiber cloth.

The fans do bump up in speed when the machine gets warm. I used to turn off the PS3 when this happened, but LBP has changed that... oops.

Oh well, it's my way of speaking that is "hyperbole-ish". I didn't mean the guy's post was 100% bull.
