Polar Peak - Act 2 [+Pics][+Spotlighted!]

Archive: 11 posts

Finally finished Polar Peak - Act 2! The style is similar to the first act, with the multiple ways and the Polar Bears as your enemies. There's some new things, like enemies, mechanism and a boss in the end! Some pics:

This was a really enjoyable platformer. I loved the style and custom content.

One thing that really stuck out here are the mechanical gameplay elements. For instance, riding on a platform and grabbing to lower yourself in order to pick up points, or grabbing a hold of something to throw you up to the next floor.

Jumping to the end - the final polar bear boss was definately the highlight of your level, and was pretty innovative. I loved dragging that little platform around to jump up and destroy sections of the polar bear.

I usually have some cons when I check out a level, but I didn't really notice anything that stood out as wrong. The only thing (and this is TOTALLY my opinion) I could think of is the legs on the big polar bear moved a little funky. If you spent a little time making the legs double jointed to give the bear more of a natural walk, this could be one of those little details that really make people throw in a heart at the end.

But regardless, I put a heart on it - nice job!

I had a hard time beating the final boss. The spring didn't seem to boost me high enough, and the grabbably floors made it frustrating. At least for the boss fight you should change the floors to a material that is not grabbable. You can always put a thin layer of the snow pattern in front of the floor.2009-02-28 22:29:00

CCubbage - Good to hear you liked the level! I will see if I can make better legs for the polar king, I'm not very good in those things hehe >.< Thanks for the feedback!

DarkDedede - Thanks for the feedback! I changed the material of the floor in the boss part and made the spring with more boost. Maybe can resolve the 3 stars and fustrating tags too hahaha >.<

hey man, i gave you 4 stars for this level, really quite well done. I truly enjoyed the parts where you can move up and down, while Sam moves you left and right. the last one though, you should remove the top portion of the blue smoke at the very end of it, because i died 3 times on it trying to figure it out. it was kinda a pointless feeling death.

other than that, i really enjoyed the whole level. something you could try if you want... for the flying guys. ( i just thought this up...)
the piston, when set to a minimum length of 0 turns invisible... try starting with the firefly and connecting it to (whatever it's connected to) and vice versa, so that the little bit that is visible isn't visible on the bug. then make the maximum length where you want it at.
then, make the piston stiff, and have a strength of 0. that way it wont move up and down, and the bug doesnt look as though it is attached to anything.

let me know if that works, if you try it, i just thought it up while playing your level and if i had time right now i'd totally give it a go.

anyhow, i had no real problems with your level. i enjoyed your custom content, and the level was very well done!

I took off the smoke in the last Sam ride, and made some parts easier. About the piston in the flying enemy, i will try to do that. Hope it's works

Good to know you liked the level, TJapan! Thanks!

Now the insects are "really" flying, but i did in a bit different way. I will test the way TJapan told me =O (i think will work better )

About the articulations in the leg of the Polar King, i have no idea how to do it, because i need differents planes to do each leg, and that could affect the gameplay... Someone has an idea? >.<

Thanks!

Not that the legs are a HUGE thing, it would just be cool. But if you wanted to work on this area you could probably:

Attach the joints with a small piece of rubber which is so thin it becomes invisible attached to the thin layer with a turn-bolt. It would probably not even be noticed during gameplay. Probably be good to play with it in a test level.

I will try do to that CCubbage! Thanks for the idea

I made an upgrade in the flying insects, in the way TJapan told me. (now they're really flying and theres no piston piece hahaha)
Think it's working better now
