So...........how do online levels work?

Archive: 15 posts

I heard somewhere that if you want to play a level that someone has uploaded to the LBP network you need to download it first onto your PS3 hard drive. But every one on this forum seems to believe that you can just click on any level and be immediately (with some loading of course) taken into the level and be able to exit at any time.

Has there been any confirmation on this topic? It would be very annoying if you had to download the levels from the network.

Excuse me if this has been talked about before.

the levels are only a couple of megabytes so the download is so short it is like a loading screen ( i think)2008-08-21 11:18:00

I was under the impression the levels were smaller than a meg. More like, half a meg or so. If this is the case, the downloads would be super fast. Something like downloading a super hi-rez image.2008-08-21 11:38:00

You have to download it, but when you download it, I believe it takes you right to the load screen. It downloads, then loads up during the load screen. After you play if you can either keep it on your HDD or delete it.2008-08-21 12:11:00

being able to keep a level or toss it would be so awesome as i don't expect all the levels on the community to be a keeper. i thought it would be a load to play but you couldn't keep their level unless they can give the level template as a prize. but if what you are saying is true than I am a happy man at this moment.2008-08-21 12:29:00

Since they're not allowing HDD image uploads, other peoples levels should be really quick to download. It'll just be data telling your Playstation where to get the stuff off the disc and where to put it. The only reason a level should take longer to DL would be because, the user abused the PSEye.

I've decided that I'm gonna try to only use the disc based stuff. No custom stickers using the eye toy or anything like that.

You can immediately play it, but you're actually playing it on your hard drive. When you immediately play it, you actually do download it to your HDD. I'd imagine that'd put less strain on the servers. I'm 90% sure here, but maybe Sam knows more.

I think you're right. I think while it's "loading" it's actually downloading to your HDD, and maybe when you go onto your "My Moon" space, you have the option to access any of those levels from your HDD.
