"Saving Private Ryan" by CloudStrife_ca
Unlockables: Troop Carrier Boat, Willys Jeep, Kettlekrad, Tiger Tank, Panzer Tank, Sherman Tank, Pvt. Ryan, Capt Miller and the 38. CAL Anti-Aircraft Gun.

There used to be a time when the build metre in a blank level seemed endless and filling one seemed impossible, but like Starwars - The Battle Of Hoth, "Saving Private Ryan" has completely and easily filled this blank canvas.

This level took about a month altogether, although I didn't rush the creative process as I was implementing my own new ideas, mainly to draw in all the buildings you'll see throughout the level by hand. The process consisted of capturing my drawings with the Eyetoy which I studied from the internet (mainly the Saving Private Ryan Online Encyclopedia which I luckily stumbled across while building this level) and then cutting my drawings to shape to produce some high detail background images at a fairly low cost in build space.

Not only did these turn out well but by adding cameras to each building I was able to play to the strengths of the angles I drew the buildings at which made these towns stand out when you're playing but it also allowed me to add as many vehicles as there are in the level because of how little building space this technique used.

"Saving Private Ryan" tops the scales vehicle wise beating out even my own Starwars - The Battle Of Hoth with 10 vehicles including a fully functional/controllable Sherman Tank, a fully functional/controllable Willys Jeep, 2 Tiger Tanks, 1 Panzer Tank, a Kettlekrad (aka Rabbit), The Troop Carrier Boat, the 38. CAL Anti-Aircraft Gun, 2 P-51 Mustangs and as always I've used my eye for detail to build all of these vehicles to scale. I borrowed a technique for the vehicle battles from a fellow 1up'er/Little Big Planet Central member "Duz_Z/NinjaMicWZ capturing a paintball and shooting it out of an emitter which worked all too well for destroying vehicles without destroying everything else.

All eight members of the cast were painstakingly captured with the Eyetoy and stamped onto a material and cut around as used for the main cast in Starwars, besides the vehicles this was a large "eater" of building space as some cast members were done twice for different scenes. The music was a really toned down version of the Metal Gear Solid track and toned down as much as it was sounded somewhat like the Call Of Duty: World At War title screen which was my inspiration... because how do you add music to Saving Private Ryan?!

You'll find I pick certain lines directly from the movie and other points of my level are made up to adapt for an entertaining level experience, either way I tried to research all the details I could from a Saving Private Ryan/ WWII aspect, either way I just hope you all enjoy it... below are pics from my level and all the drawings used to create the buildings in the level. Comments and feedback are always welcome!!

looks great man but one thing judging by the pictures that will take away from your atmosphere is being able to see the default ground....making your ground high enough so you can't see the default one. other than that looks awesome and ill check it out

your custom art work w/ the ps eye looks great though and all of your custom vehicles etc. you can really tell your an artist

Thanks man, actually I wish I had thought about raising the level off the default ground, you're totally right it would add so much to the atmosphere and is such an obvious thing, I may do that in a future update although it could take some serious planning. But thanks alot, thats probably one of the most helpful comments I think I've received.

Will raising a level like that eat up much building space tho? I have literally none to spare... I got a message my level was overheating a few times, and to try using less complicated shapes, my metre was at the very top basically.

I understand that this is all a part of the atmosphere and everything but I recomend that, in the published version, you replace some of the text as there is a chace that your level will be moderated (removed from the LBP server). By the way, I'm not saying this because I think it's bad but I'm saying it just so you know (and because MM think it's bad).

Awesome looking level though.

Yeah, if they catch it then it'll get modded and all the work will go down the drain :S

Actually, it might not. That's what used to happen but now, if it isn't over the top, you'll have a chance to fix the problems pointed out by a mod in an in-game message.

Best to change it before that happens though.

Thanks guys, already fixed it right after I published it this morning, it censored itself out and basically bleeped out all speech bubbles with any swearing. It even bleeped out one speech bubble because the name "Adolf Hitler" was used when Jackson was talking to Captain Miller as everyone was walking through the grass.

I basically changed everything to comic book swearing "son of a *****" became "son of a b#$ch!" and I always keep copys of my levels on my "save moon" thanks again though, this really is an awesome community!

With all the etching around your character and building cut outs, you've got thousands of points and vertices... so it's no wonder your therm is full.

This is one of the most detailed, and aesthetically amazing levels I've seen despite having so few objects and sequences... the sketchwork is like walking through an art gallery and forces. It's mostly a calm walk, but there is so much mechanical finesse and meticulous craft in every inch that you can't help but force yourself to stop and admire it.

My favorite little detail, that's easy to overlook, is the instruction manuals for each vehicle... they're individual books, almost unnoticable placed on or next to each one, and feel like a record, a diary that someone might have left behind. Someone that's probably since passed on, or has their own story to tell. That really adds alot to what this kind of project is and should feel like.

Never has any NPC I've seen felt so alive and human... alot of that is because of the visual captures, but really is enhanced by everything around it and the care taken in etching them into perfect shaping and placing, and choosing the perfect still and pose to apply to each sequence.

I've never seen a level quite like this, and it really has much of the same style as your Hoth piece, but feels much more personal and profound than a simple high quality homage. All the time you've spent on this has certainly been worth it, and I'm glad you can have a medium for your artistic talents in general. I've only scanned in one drawing, my own hand, and it's been collecting dust on my moon for awhile lol

Wow thanks so much Dub, its cool you're on these boards sharing the praise, especially as you're flying high with your recent acknowledgements on the Contra series.

My "instruction manuals" were a last minute add, because I knew I needed something to explain the controls of all the vehicles. Originally I had a clipboard with instructions, but I liked the idea of a full on manual instead and thats how it came to be... the things we think of at 3:30am!

With Starwars the vehicles really stole the show, I had backgrounds and an atmosphere built there as well, in particular the Echo Base, but with this level I was really trying to set a mood and make the background, jump into the players foreground using my own artwork to do so... it was a gamble and I had my own doubts in the beginning. As you can see the Eyetoy doesn't capture all the detail or transfer the original into the game as well, but hopefully MM will revisit the idea of JPEG support.

Its alot of fun but its so much work, I don't think people realize but I put about 2-3hrs into drawing each of those buildings, inking them and then another 40 mins cutting them out. I even re-drew 2 of the buildings after I wasn't satisfied with the way the ink looked, so I went shopping for a specific pen and did them over again.

I also found you have to be really careful drawing and stamping in straight lines, rulers are a must!! because if your lines arent symmetrical you're object will turn into the shape of an trapezoid in game. I think after a bit of a break I'd be interested in doing a collaboration project like you did... not so much building the level, but offering to build the vehicles, doing custom backgrounds (buildings ect with my artwork to mix with ideas like yours, so as in your gameplay with my visual edge... it'd have to be the right idea though.
