So how is LBP3?

Archive: 13 posts

Seeing as LBP3 is now out in North America and the rest of the world has to wait an extra week or so, how are you finding the game? Is it good, bad, strange, [insert meaningful adjective here]? Do tell, I'd like to hear some outside opinions beforehand.2014-11-18 07:32:00

Been playing for about two and a half hours.

It has crashed on me once, and stuttered a little bit in the introduction before I installed the day one patch.

Other than that it has been great.

What I wanted to know is if it still "feels" like a LittleBigPlanet game. MM games had this unique "feel" to them, but I'm worried Sumo Digital could have changed it up a bit too much.2014-11-18 07:55:00

Played five levels. It's absolutely fantastic. It feels like LBP on steroids.

The levels are amazing, at least compared to the previous LBPs. But even then, they are beautiful. I only played for a little while though, but most of what I saw was already enough to make me want to play more.

The first boss reminded me of Bongo Bongo from LoZ and the details in its body movements and hands gave it life.

The create feels like usual, except for a few added changes with some tools that make some things easier. I DID however try the popit academy stuff, some of it anyways, and the corner editor was a little annoying using it with the Popit Power-up. I didn't try the corner editor in actual create, but the cursor doesn't stop at the edges anymore, which was a little bittersweet; it annoyed me and made some things a little easier.

It feels like an MM game, although...... better than that. I would be curious how MM would have made the levels if they had access to the tools, but how it is now is rather nice.

Oh yeah. Floaty jumps have been tweaked a bit. It feels nice going up, but when Sackboy comes down, it still has a small bit of that floaty physics in his jump. And he does still slide just a TIIIIIINY bit when he lands.

The create feels overwhelming though. I don't even know what project to start on. If it wasn't for my previous LBP experience, I'd imagine that going into the create mode would be very..... daunting. The Popit Academy feels tedious though, due to previous experience, but they are like levels themselves and you get prizes when playing them, and completing them, so I do them.

It's got some launch bugs that it'll shake off before long.

As for the core design of the game, it's the best LittleBigPlanet yet by a good margin. I actually feel a little invested in what's going on in the story. The new animation usage adds a whole lot to the entertainment value of the cutscenes; they feel less taped together. I like most of the characters more than the curators of LBP2 (though that old lady's design haunts the deepest corners of my mind), the level design is the best it's ever been, and the overall structure is new and refreshing, as opposed to the differences between LBP1 and 2 (the addition of cutscenes and level links and that's about it).

I won't be touching create mode for a while yet, but taking that into account on top of everything else, I think this will be the best LBP yet, easily.

Costume design seems pretty good too. Much better than the numerous strange bits and bobs in LBP2 that were uh... interesting artistically, but rarely something you'd actually want to have your sackperson wear. Stuff like that wolf head you can get in the manglewood store is really interesting in how it kind of overrides Sackboy's normal head design, but still functions properly with his animations.

I'll play some more tomorrow.

This is actually a feature... or at least enables a feature. You can drag select multiple vertices at once and move them together.

This is going to sound insane, and I know I have been hyped up, but is it really worth it?

I've seen countless reviewers say it is just bad and glitch filled, so what would you guys say?

Buy it for definite. The reviewers didn't think these glitches to the LBP franchise warranted reducing the score with LBP1/LBP2 so why suddenly think they are now? And most of the reviewers that complained hadn't downloaded the patch. Add to that the complete lack of understanding of what LBP is all about and you have the prefect reason to ignore them. Plus I've watched hours of create and gameplay and it's fantastic. Glitches are always there, always have been there and always will be there. Glitches gave us 50 layers, 3D cameras and Theck and Thack. Just buy, enjoy it and complain in the annual 'patch b messed up patch a' threads that inevitably pop up on this site. It's part of the LBP culture.2014-11-19 23:10:00

If you like LBP, I'd say it's easily worth it.

- The new create tools are insane and game changing.

- The story is a lot of fun and some of the levels are actually very well designed.

If anything, I would suggest you get it at launch just to support Sumo and LBP as a whole.

There are some issues right now, but the kind that are just a bit annoying and that will be stomped out once the dust settles.

Huh. I figured using R2 to multi-select corners did that. Sucks that you can't use this new feature to select the corners of two different shapes though.2014-11-19 23:39:00

Once the store updates and the bugs are fixed it will be amazing. But it will probably be fixed by the 26th (when you get it) so waiting wasn't all that bad.2014-11-19 23:44:00
