We landed on a comet!

Archive: 7 posts

A few days ago, a European spacecraft called Philae landed on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Though landing on a comet as opposed to another planet may not seem like a great success, I think it is still quite a big deal. What are your thoughts/reactions to this event?

Here's some basic information about the event (http://www.space.com/27761-philae-comet-landing-bounces-first-photos.html)

People already made stupid conspiracy theories with no reasonable points.

It's a cool event, honestly.

Its so amazing what scientists out of many different disciplines can do, if they work together! And its nearly unbelievable, that they could send this little lab on its journey through space to meet this comet with its unbelievable high speed on exactly the place where scientists had calculated it to be! And then to manage that he could land on this orb! Fantastic! Its a pity that it seemed to have landed in a shadowy place so that it couldn't charge its batteries per sunlight. These are the moments, that I'm feeling proud to be a homo sapiens! Its a pity that our species seems to be more a homo stupidus, considering all the actual wars, the still increasing pollution, the extermination of animals, the predatory exploitation of nature,... oh yes! Sometimes we need to visit a comet to know that we are the pride of creation!

Many greetings, Jürgen^^

Well. If we ever run into a Deep Impact scenario, maybe with this we can fend off such a threat!

In all seriousness though, I wonder if it would be possible to ride comets, and possibly use them to travel. A strange thought, but I do wonder.

And a HAZZAH for progress!

Amazing scientific achievement and truly a testament to mankind's potential.

Sadly, it won't be remembered, because it happened the same week when a vanity-celebrity and a photoshop team of 1000 people published a picture of the said celebrity without clothes on.

Is this really the world we want to live in? I should move to a comet.

Although that comet would probably be named after one of those celebrities.

On one side, it's an amazing achievement. Everything they had to plan for ten years in the future, and it all went perfectly.
On the other hand... I'm not totally sure. Yet another piece of junk somewhere in space. Less metal on earth, extra CO2 in the ozon layer, etc.
Yeah, I know, maybe I just shouldn't think so sad...
Still, I'm fascinated by space. I love to make my brain crash by thinking of it. Most of the time I think of infinity. It's something my mind can't comprehend.
