While they can as shown in the level above, it's not by default.

It involves the Broadcast Microchip and some logic like the Character Animation Tweaker, it's not very easy to make, but there was a level giving it away in the Beta.

Not sure if you are referring to the swimming animation logic that I was giving away... But maybe I an add some info on my tests.

I did recreate (as close as possible) normal swimming with animations and a broadcast microchip that behaved like an impact sensor when you jumped into a block of sticker panel. With X even making you swim faster and changing the animation to a bigger swim stroke.

It worked really well (after working out the animation transitions), and I'm pretty confident that you will see robust multi direction, top down, sectional swimming logic fairly quickly after launch.

The hardest part was setting a transition zone between swimming and treading water but I did get that also working, and even had a dive animation if you jumped into the 'water' from a height.
