When RPGs go wrong! episode 1: You de boss!

Archive: 11 posts

Hi folks it's been awhile last i posted a topic for 1 of my level concepts err? well normally that would still be the case as i'm busy with many personal game and art projects nowadays and no longer often feel the need to show off my projects until they are least getting close to done. however today i'm making a exception just because i'm having fun thinking up ideas for this idea of mine and have no idea when i'll have the time to actually make it as i have many other game and level projects i prefer to focus on and complete first.

Also excuse the lack of art for this level concept, my PC is in the shop so i can't easily show any doodle concepts at this time. i'll maybe doodle some later on when i can.

Moving on to the concepts for this level. This level idea is a part of a somewhat old concept of mine i came up with during the early days of LBP2, the idea is a parody/spoof of generic JRPGs and have them twisted and took in new directions that's abnormal and silly and perhaps a bit dark. You see... the idea started from my own personal flusteration with how RPGs... especially most JRPGs were all so copy and pasted in their ideas and concepts and were beyond cliche... it got to the point it felt like it was a bad joke, as if most RPGs were just the exact same game reskined everytime. For a quick example, You often played the role of some random generic hero dude who starts out as a nobody in a little town, you have a childhood friend and a talking pet, afterwards some boring drama happens then you have to leave town and go on adventure to defeat a crazy super powered badguy or evil group who want to destroy the world for the most absurd and facepalm worthy reasons. and along the way you meet and band together with a ragtag group of misfits who all are observed with their own small life problems, and across the story the main dude will become a hero, get rich and find romance... and towards the end with a fight with the final boss the team has to work together and defeat the evil with the power of love and believing in themselves and prove why mankind is limitless or some other kind of BS. Anyways you get the idea if you seen these kinds of stories before...

But yeah, my own disappointment with the lack of difference in story telling and even often the gameplay commonly with these games... inspired me to write 'When RPGs go wrong!' which is a handful of short stories that seem like a generic JRPG at first... but then before very long they all go horribly wrong and turn super twisted... mostly in a fairly light hearted and comical way however, it's not meant to be rude or insulting. just goofy stuff for fun and to give a different outlook on things.

And today i'll talk about 1 of the short stories i plan on turning into a single level sometime. the name of the level... or i should say episode is 'You de boss!'

The idea for this level is simple. You the player will play as... wait for it... The final boss! You will take control of a giant... scary... yet somewhat generic final boss monster and will have to battle against a generic JRPG group of heroes!

Now it's time to explain some of the more juicy details... Since these are short stories, this means stuff like LVs and stats with tons of numbers is extremely uneeded, and as such i won't bother with them... especially since number count logic is super annoying and honestly often pointless even on real RPGs. i will keep it basic and simply separate character stats with a small list of different classes. example is a Mage would have a low HP class where as a Knight would have a high HP class....

As the final boss you will have absolutely no items and can't revive yourself... however you will have a super big wall of HP and can unlock more and more powerful and strange battle skills the lower your HP gets... But that's just the start, who says being a final boss monster is easy? the hard challenge comes from the fact you will have to fight a group of unfairly highly prepared super armed heroes... these heroes have it all! tons of items, including healing and revival items... soon as you think you defeated 1... BOOM! they revive themselves back to life!... these heroes are worse then cockroaches and will be working together with... teamwork! 'Eww' to bring you down, You will have to use strategy and all your wits to bring these egotistical little goody two-shoes heroes down first.

Anyways i hope these ideas amused you folk. feel free to comment. :-)

I am beginning to think a "I Don't Have the Time" section may be needed, what with all these different ideas popping up that creators don't have time for.

May just start putting 'IDHtT: Level Name Here' on any posts I make like this.

Well it actually depands on how often i get in the mood to work on it and how hard it is to make. since it's short stories and very simplified version of a basic JRPG battle system... it may not be hard for me to make, and i often work on multiple projects anyways. but regardless sooner or later i'll get to it. especially since LBP3 made my current projects less difficult. But more then anything i just needed to get talking about the idea out of my system.

Yeah. There have been a few posts about projects that aren't the creator's focus at the moment. A section wouldn't be necessary, but I have noticed some of those popping up some.

That's brilliant! If you pull it off, I will play that so hard! You could have some extra obnoxious things like each hero has an item equipped that will revive and fully heal all party members but it's used up the first time they die, so you have to kill each hero one at a time to burn up those items. You could have a MP removing attack to try to run them out of ethers (or whatever you call them; I think ether is a FF term). An attack you can only use once every 5-10 turns that drops everybody to 1hp but leaves you recharing long enough that they have time to fully recover. Some super over the top summon type attack that looks like it's going to unleash horrific devastation like Sephiroth's supernova attack and it only does like 1k of damage. It would be good times.2014-11-10 23:09:00

I think I am on record being a fan of this idea. Theres so much to make fun off with JRPGs, the list is quite ridiculous. I think it would be funny if the the player(final boss) can cheat against the heros and gain extra turns. Make fun of gameplay flaws, like in FF 9 if a character turns Zombie and dies, you cannot raise them without first removing zombie. Or make fun of Persona for having game over when the party member dies by allowing the final boss to win just by killing that member--oh god so many ideas come to mind.

I agree it doesnt need stats and the get a little deep, I think its good for the community. So many bad staples of JRPGs are embraced by newer rpg developers just so the project can be identified as JRPG, when in reality, a lot of these cliches can really hurt a project.

Episode theme ideas off the top of my head:

Surprise Princess
Burning Village
Hero waking up in rural house after a dream/vision.
Amnesia Protagonist found by a blonde chick
Fighting all elemental guardians of the world/palette swipe dungeons
Super overpowered protagonist with legendary powers
Make fun of Aeris Death in FF 7. (The party clearly has pheonix downs, so we cant use them on Aeris!?)

Tons more, but just a couple things that could easily be made fun of.

You should make the satire a little less blunt, and make it a little more subtle. Rather than calling it, "When RPGs Go Wrong", give it one of the most generic sounding names you can come up with, or an obvious 'off-brand' name, like Final [Insert word that starts with F].

Make the game feel serious, but obviously a joke.

Thanks. And yeah i could pull it off easy enough long as I can get my effort up. :&apos

Yeah a lot of those kinds of things I have planned already. Heroes with obnoxious equipment. burning the heroes MP down with anti magic attacks. Special super powered attacks that take couple turns to use. ETC. It'll be pretty fun imo to play as a Boss monster. *mew

Indeed, *mew ...Honestly I believe there is a big untapped source of story and gameplay ideas for JRPGs that never is really touched upon. I would love to see JRPGs being more inspired with their ideas and try to think outside of the box far more often instead of simply adding more lumber to the fire.

I actually have episode 2 already planned... since technically I wrote EP2 first, I rearranged the stories as I worked on them over time. The story for Ep2 may need little reworking depending on if I want to tie it into the first EP or not.

But the basic idea for EP2 is you follow a down on their luck dull hero group who's save the world job got stolen by a more popular and awesome hero group... After-all who says in a cliche JRPG world there would be only 1 group of heroes willing to save the world and aim for the glory of it all? The now jobless hero group must find new meaning in life and look for new jobs... and deal with their jealously and rage towards the other group of awesome heroes that got everything in life they wanted.

But as time goes on the no-luck hero group lose focus of their goals in life more and more and even their personalities start to turn strange and screwed up.

And here are the titles of all the characters in the no luck hero group. I may even make shorten versions of the titles into their actual names to be funny. *mew

"Generic Bargain-brand Hero"
"Typical Liability White-Mage"
"Your Everyday Useless Thief"
"Stereotypical Cool Gun Guy"
"Everyone Group Has One Beast-Man"
"Pokemon-Reject"

And this last character below I may add into their group at a later point if I tie the 2 episodes together.
"Nonspecific Final-Boss"

PS: I have my PC back so I can start uploading pictures again. So I'll try to do that fairly soon.

Neh. In this case I prefer to be straight forward especially as my aim for it is to be mainly a over the top comedy. Not saying ya idea is bad, it's just not really what i want or plan on doing. But I think you'll understand my aim more once you see the stories.

Also the series isn't pure satire. My goal isn't only to make fun of JRPGs. my goal is more of a case of having fun taking them into new strange silly directions that they would normally never do... Or you could saying it's like taking a mold and then breaking it and then adding your own shapes into it for fun.

This is a really nice idea, and would be rather fun and frustrating playing the boss... Taking massive damage from a group of people! Basically cheating, with spells and items would really get on your nerves... Which would explain the lame taunts they normally come up with when you get them to half energy.2014-11-15 20:53:00

I agree. Besides, the lbp community isn't traditionally all that great at picking up on subtlety in my experience. That's why when people ask how to get their levels played, I advise using an ostentatious title that also gives the audience a very non-subtle idea of what they're going to see in your level. I named a level (and sorry, not trying to plug but trying to make a point) "Star Wars Jedi Arts: Lightsaber Duels" which is a horrible title artistically and the exact opposite of subtle and it's now the second most hearted LBP2 level of all time. Know your audience.

That didn't seem like a level that needed to have a subtle title. Shoooot. Star Wars isn't subtle already. 'Wars in space'. The title for your level actually fits the theme of what it's based on fairly well. Star Wars titles never were really known for being subtle is what I am saying. And it IS a Star Wars game where you could fight with lightsabers. That has to do more with brand recognition though.

ANYWAYS! A mix of subtlety and bluntness in a title was more of what I was referring to; in the middle. After all, there are degrees of subtlety. But he said he wanted to take it in a different direction. I like some subtlety in a title myself, when playing anothers level, but not a riddle for a title. I'd agree that the majority of the community may not pick up on heavy subtlety very well though.

But this is satire, and subtlety is a common tool used with satire, if not one of the main.
