LBP3 RPG, Side-scroller or Top-down?

Just out of curiosity, if I were to make an RPG, would you prefer top-down style (think Diablo, and other dungeon crawler style) or a sidescrolling platformer (such as Smash brothers meets crash bandicoot)

Self-made sidescroller example (LBP2)

If you don't mind, a vote would be useful. I want to create something people would enjoy.
(Expect single player modes as well as player versus player, so consider both)

You could just use both.

Although my question as someone who would be interested in trying someone's level is not which they use, but how they use it.

What you're asking is something we can't really answer. That's a developer's decision based on what you will have in the game and how the game will play.

What you're asking is something we can't really answer. That's a developer's decision based on what you will have in the game and how the game will play.

The reason I ask is because I plan on making a game that I can expand on and let people come back and build upon their characters with, etc. I wanted to get an idea of how people like to play so I can make something that people will want to come back and play. Quality is very important to be, but I know what I can do. I've been just trying to gather information on what will draw people in and ultimately get them to come back for any extensions I do to my game/levels.

I can create pretty solid side-scrolling, but my specialty is certainly top-down, so I am leaning that way. But I don't wnat to spend tons and tons of hours on it if its just not something people are into, you know?

Of course, its seeming like I don't have much to worry about. Seems like people are wanting some top-down action. Another reason for my concern was that LBP is primarily a side-scroller type of game, so people tend to expect those.

Side scrollers are common; a lot of them just aren't...polished. That said, something side scroll would be cool. Dragons Crown or Tales of style rpgs come to mind. It doesnt need to be top down to play like diablo and I actually encourage mixing usually.

I would suggest creating what you want to create. As long as you are having fun making it, its more likely to turn out great. Everyone has their own preference in gaming, but as a creator, its our job to bring the players into our imagination and ultimately persuade them to enjoy it. Go with what you want to develop in your gut. Rpgs are the tougher style of levels to create, so developing what you want will help you stick with it during the difficult portions.

Bottom line is. Whichever you choose, if you do it well, then people will play it. And if your specialty is top-downs, go for top-downs. Personally, I would certainly say there is a TON of room for top-downs since I have yet to see a single top-down that reeeeaaallly stood out. (To me that is. Just me) Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of good ones, but I have yet to see one that has made me really want to play it.

BUUUUT!

IF you want to go about this as a popular venture, 'what gets the most attention for the level' kind of thing, and with LBP3 coming around and the ability to make better 3D levels, then that would be the 'in' thing to do. The trend, as it were. If you can stick out in the soon-to-come rush of 3D levels, and be the shining example of 'how high the bar is', then you will astonish. I'm not talking about just aesthetics either. I'm talking THE level/game in its entirety. If you are able to make something that will keep players coming back, I say go for it! HAZAH! 8U

Although if you're just trying to make a level to the best of your current abilities, and want it to have some decent traffic, then I guess that's cool too. There's really nothing wrong with that, and I say woot-woot for you! :hero:

Call me crazy but I would love to see a side scroller from you.

While I do enjoy top-downs, side scrollers are usually very fun to play for me and I don't see very many of them. And besides, a side scroller inside of a side scroller sounds pretty cool, y'know?

Here's a fan-made side scroller beat-em-up called Grief Syndrome. It's based off of a show which I utterly adore.
