Multi-game in game
Archive: 6 posts
K, What? Has anybody made or played a level that has multiple mini-games inside it? Not talking about multiple levels 1-2-3-4... But lets say 4 seperate areas and styles of controls with one level. For example I will use: In one area pacman, and the second area will have space invaders, third area will have pong, forth will have duck hunt. Im guessing a selector would be used to 'jump between games'. Would modify a select game 'screen' on the hud. That would 'highlight' which game you'd like to jump to when using the selector button. Example D-pad to select game, X to accept. I think this concept would be great to use. I believe that once this idea is built, you would have the abilty to create in game sub-menus (without pausing the game). If you have an adventure style game... guess what, now you have an inventory sub-menus. Lost in a level, why not bring up the map? Cant, no one has built in yet. Let all work together on the idea or concept and logic usage. As a community we should keep improving each others abilities. -I would love to have a custom sub-menu inventory display. Ho-hmm... Oh dont mind me, I'm just placing rails down on a track. "Where are you going?" Where ever you want. | 2014-10-31 15:33:00 Author: valious2corvus Posts: 171 |
It's a good idea in principal, however the HUD is the limiting factor. There are widgets that can't be turned on and off, for instance the timer. Text can only be brought onto the screen once you've started the level. The magic mouth is your other option, but it murders the thermo, even with no 'voice'. I agree, there's possibly a way around this but sub-menu's? I can't think of any way of doing that. Try my level Murder Mystery (https://karting.lbp.me/v/t61a). I spent some time messing about with text and a 'menu' of sorts at the end where you decide whodunnit. That might give you an idea of what I'm talking about. Also the mini movie that I made has a combination lock at the start of the level that stops anyone trying to watch it unless they've completed the Murder Mystery level. | 2014-10-31 17:19:00 Author: Scorpio1357 Posts: 460 |
Maybe if you use different cameras that you can select, and have the sub-menus on those camera views. Example camera 1 would display guy, camera 2 would display map, camera 3 would display inventory.... It would eliminate the Hud limitions and be easy on the logic. | 2014-10-31 17:41:00 Author: valious2corvus Posts: 171 |
Makes sense. That's how the Murder Mystery level works at the end, so it's do-able. The issue you'll then face is on the inventory menu. You'll need to have pictures of the items collected, or power ups active etc. Don't even think about trying to write anything using stickers, in my experience you tend to get halfway through and previous stickers begin to disappear! | 2014-10-31 18:48:00 Author: Scorpio1357 Posts: 460 |
I was thinking in the sub-menu (camera2) you would see the blank inventory screen (when you first start). Then when you collect or unlock items they would show up on the screen. They would always be there, but covered up. Let say the inventory screen has a black backround, I'd use black squares/rectangles with destroyers to 'cover' the items. Once the "item" is collected, it would activate the destroyer and reveal the "item" (kind of like old school 'metroid' suit-upgrade inventory screen). As for the words or writing. I personally dont like using stickers for words, like you said... problems. And yes the magic mouth, eats thermo. I like using building materials to create letters (1 piece per word). I use the 'snap mode on' and the grid. Using the squares on your grid each letter would be on the grid scale of 5 down, and 3 across after words are complete they can grouped, shrunk, or enlarged. | 2014-11-01 11:12:00 Author: valious2corvus Posts: 171 |
Now that's a great idea. Wish I'd thought of that. Suggestion: Limit the material types you use in the 4 different levels. This will help greatly with thermo conservation, my particular favourite is the 'beveled plastic' material, for a number if reasons. 1. It's white initially meaning a simple change of colour makes it look different, even just a change in brightness gives a slightly muted greyed effect. 2. It's relatively smooth so takes stickers without major distortion. 3. Because of the bevelled edge you can get smooth rounded corners if needed. An oval shape for instance, left 'fat' with the middle cut out makes an ideal boat/dinghy for a simple custom kart. We ought to try and put together a definitive list of 'thermo savers', just a thought. | 2014-11-01 17:02:00 Author: Scorpio1357 Posts: 460 |
