To Catch a Cosmic Thief

Archive: 17 posts

I mentioned this on another thread a while ago, but thought I'd give it more attention.

I've been wanting to make a proper sci-fi epic for a while now but never really given it enough attention, and suddenly LBP3 is thrust upon us and this little idea comes into my head. It will be about seven levels long, three of which are cutscenes and four are levels.
I just made this little plot summary of what I've got so far:
A retired private detective by the name of Lawrence Burton invites Sackboy and pals to an old stately home, asking for their help in locating somebody. Burton reveals that he has been trying to catch this somebody for years but has been continuously outwitted and taunted.
This somebody is Artemis Clarke, a time-travelling thief that is renowned as the best thief in the universe. He once managed to steal an entire star system, through expert application of politics and a large space-bending device. He has stolen sixty-three planets in his lifetime, and approximately four hundred billion pounds worth of goods, and recently he has been thieving from Burton again. Burton explains that he fitted some stolen items with trackers, and they have been traced to the Gargantuan, a state-of-the-art starliner in deep space. Sackboy and chums depart for the Gargantuan in the Pod, and the adventure begins...

Two levels will be set on the Gargantuan, one on a distant alien planet and another on a rusty, old ship. I have a terrible attention span when it comes to creating levels, so let's just hope this one pulls through.
Also, any music would be much appreciated, I'd love to have some sequenced music in my levels but I'm not particularly skilled enough to do it.

Couldn't the thief just kill or stop someone if they could time-travel?

Regardless! The idea sounds like a fun story.

o.O You're right.

Said thief does no actual time travelling in the series. Maybe I should rename it.

So he's not a time traveler, just a guy who can bend space and teleport really quickly? Like in Jumper, but able to transport much bigger things?

Probably, he is able to teleport through a gadget on his wrist. I mean, he managed to steal an entire star system! xD2014-10-23 22:55:00

Couldn't he just teleport behind the detective and kill him?

Unless of course the thief is in love with the chase.

That's partially it, but I like the idea that the thief isn't downright evil. He's a bit of a kleptomaniac, addicted to thievery but never quite crossing the Moral Event Horizon enough to kill someone.2014-10-23 23:09:00

What type of time logic will it use? By that I mean, if paradoxes exist for the story and game and stuff like that.2014-10-24 11:53:00

I accidentally chose a stupid name, having just realised no time-travel occurs in the level series, but can't change the thread title xD

If I could it would be something like "To Catch a Cosmic Thief", as it takes place more in space than in time.

Would you like me to change the thread title?

Or you can change the title by clicking Edit, Go Advanced and scroll to the box Title.

Mostly platforming, it's probably my best thingy and I'm not exactly brilliant at other stuff. I might add in perhaps a top-down level at some point if I can get it to work...2014-10-24 19:41:00

I'd recommend finding some way of incorporating a fun game mechanic, (That works with the theme) rather than sticking to the normal LBP platforming of just jumping and grabbing.

Honestly, playing as the thief himself (Or herself) would be more fun than playing as the inspector if it's a platformer. Basically, Sly Cooper.

Or you could go the route of "Old timer uses outdated technology". The thief has his amazing teleporter, and the detective has some other tech that is outdated, and it's a clash between outdated tech VS new tech.

I did some revision on the original concept and have replaced the main character from Sackboy to the enigmatic Edgar Ross...2014-11-15 23:34:00

It sounds pretty cool.

Also, what was the original title?

It was originally called To Catch a Temporal Thief, a name which I thought was pretty snazzy until I realised that there was no time travelling whatsoever and thus the name became somewhat redundant.2014-11-16 21:39:00
