Could anyone help me out with this?

Hi guys. I have a launch version PS3 (A fat PS3 with about 40GBs space). I've had it since 2007. Now, the problem here is, that it's been getting real loud lately. When I turn it on and leave it on the XMB menu it doesn't get loud. However, if I play LBP2 or Black Ops 2, after about 10 minutes it starts getting loud. The fans start blowing 3x the normal speed. When I put my hand on my PS3 it's not hot, and I've even opened it up to vacuum all the dust. I can't find any solutions really. Are there any solutions to this but without having to buy something to fix my problem, and not having to pick the PS3 apart to fiddle with wires etc.? It started getting loud after the start of this year. | 2014-10-17 15:43:00 Author: hamorgan ![]() Posts: 145 |

I'm impressed that you've had it that long without it completely dying! My PS3 is the 80gig version, had it since Dec 08, so not quite as long, but still....... bugger me has it really been 6 years??? ![]() | 2014-10-17 16:02:00 Author: Ali_Star ![]() Posts: 4085 |
Read something about lifting the PS3 up from underneath with a couple of cans or whatever you have around, apparently helps with airflow and stops the fans kicking in.....could be worth a try? James | 2014-10-17 16:03:00 Author: James-p ![]() Posts: 286 |
It's old and dying. Back up your saves and maybe put a fan in back of it to help air circulation and cooling, | 2014-10-18 14:47:00 Author: Bremnen ![]() Posts: 1800 |
The reason your PS3 does this is because the thermal compound inbetween the main cpu and the heat sink is old and dried out, therefore it doesn't do its job. What you have to do is disassemble and put new thermal compound on. I've done mine twice now. When it starts running loud again I know it's time... After the fix it runs perfectly quiet again. I know it may sound daunting, but it's really not hard. If you have any mechanical ability at all, you can find a video online to walk you through it. Arctic silver 5 is a great compound to use. It's available at RadioShack. | 2014-11-04 02:32:00 Author: smasher ![]() Posts: 641 |
