Hello guys and gals! Ive been playing lbp2 since it came out and I was always dissapointed that a 3d or top down rpg was pretty impossible. I was wondering if anyone knows about any new features that help with rpg level building know that the nda has been lifted. Play, Create, Share!2014-10-16 00:08:00

ARR PEE GEE ARR PEE GEE ARR PEE GEE?!?!?!?!

/ahem

Sorry, if you knew me, you'd know that that was a required response.

ANYWAY, I hear that it's easier to share data between levels and group levels together as a "Game". Also, 16 layers will make top down levels much better visually and potentially gameplay wise as well.

I know ARR PEE GEE is not impossible to create, however what I am aiming to create is a system like the elder scrools or fallout. Im suggesting a fully immersive, beautiful creation.2014-10-16 01:03:00

Well u have to be specific. Theres alot of different elements to games like those and you should plan out exactly what you want to implement first and figure out how to make that with the tools provided. Lets say u want to make a top down version of skyrim. The new camera and layers will make it more aesthetically pleasing. Sackbot animations can be used for animating combat i assume. You just gotta play around with it when the hames released. Sorry if this doesnt help2014-10-16 01:15:00

No problem man! I just want to be able to have no limits to my imagination. Lbp2 was amazing however creating immersive experiences was hard considering you never truly had 3d. I just want to make a great thing for the community!2014-10-16 02:09:00

We'll to start out, 16 layers makes way more depth for a top down RPG. Also, you can move things smoothly in and out between layers with advanced in/out movers and bendy rails. Good for boss battles and stuff like that. New force chips to repel players or enemies away with attacks.

You can now even rotate the player so that his head is towards the screen in a literal top down view. You can use animation tweaker to adjust his animations for movement and attacks. Character tweakers for changing characters and gear.
Also, there are now quests you can assign in the levels and choose to complete and assign them. There's also custom power ups to make your own Weapons and sack pockets to equip and Unequip weapons.

New logic like broadcast chip makes it way easier to make logic for things. The infinite level allows for creation and deletion of certain areas of the level to reduce lag and save space and thermo.

So, in conclusion, there are LOTS of new stuff to help make something like a top down RPG lol. Can't wait to see all the creations when the game releases

There are plenty of top down RPGs in LBP2, in fact, I tend to stay away from the term "impossible". I think just about any game genre can already be created in LBP2 outside of MMO's. A lot of the new tools being introduced, are just streamlined and more accessible version of logic that was already created to me. The infinite level is easily the best addition. I will do some testing to see if anything freezes now( since its technically still in the limits of the ps3 hardware). Not to mention it was pretty hard to make an RPG underwater when sackbots die in water. Aethetically the RPG potential is much greater in LBP3. I am really excited for the character animations as well. We should see some interesting stories coming from the community.

However, lets not forget logic has not changed. While there are a lot of new features, the question being eluded is are RPGs easier to create now? Particularly for new creators, the answer is no, in fact, there will be a slightly greater learning curve in my opinion. More tools means more possibilities. And that means more new things you have to learn and more things you will ultimately have to troubleshoot and master. You will still need a basic understanding of how logic functions to really benefit from the new things being brought to the table. LBP2 vets should feel right at home though.

That being said, I do love the new additions and I hope it brings more Arr PEE GEErs around. They can be 10x better from the sounds of it. One tool being ignored here is the object saver. The most important aspect( well one of them anyway) of RPGs in LBP2 will be saving and this sounds like it will be very useful. Since it saves everything attached to an object, you could theoretically put all the game content on the object and save the entire game easily. I dont know how exactly it works though. I have grown a bit used to the Memorizer.

I disagree, creating an RPG is definitely easier in LBP3. It's still not easy, but the premade quest system and currency/shop system take a lot of work out of your hands, and a custom powerup weapon is probably easier than making your own combat system. The basic RPG vibe is pretty much there, it all depends on how complicated you want to get.2014-10-16 11:41:00
