Yeah , definitely. It would be so much easier and quicker if we had the same ones that MM used in the main story with the option not only to put much more text but to highlight particular important words or phrases in different colours. Feels like a crucial fix to me... Annoying to have to resort to having a hundred mouths when you want to convey some important information. | 2009-02-25 12:14:00 Author: Morrinn3 Posts: 493 |
having a better mouth would be awesome | 2009-02-25 13:35:00 Author: RickTheRipper Posts: 345 |
I would definitely like to see a large number of changes to the magic mouth tool. It's actually extremely limiting when you get into the details. In addition to the extremely short text string, the cut scene is also a mess. If the magic mouth is outside the cut screen it immediately cuts out. Likewise, if you use a queue of magic mouths, if any of the cut scenes are viewing areas where a magic mouth is off screen, that magic mouth is removed from the queue. There's also an arbitrary 8 magic mouth limit in the queue. On top of all that, sometimes (I haven't figured out the cause yet) magic mouth texts pop up as all "********************" I'm a big fan of Maraz_Matari's talking tools, which will let you do the full 8 allowed in a queue. Recently, I've been building my own devices to control magic mouths which use a wheel cart similar to the ones Media Molecule uses in survival challenges. There's two huge disadvantages to this. 1) A user can cut the text box too early, before the next one is activated. 2) The text box will close automatically after a set time, which means some users will find they didn't have a chance to read the whole thing. The advantages to doing it this way are that you no longer need to deal with the 8 queue limit. Also, You can basically script a cutscene by having visuals and sounds timed to occur with the correct text. Finally, because each mouth is activated individually, you don't need to worry about the cut scene option closing off other mouths that are off screen. I have a thread in this suggestion forum on "interactivity switches." Rather than changing the magic mouth, I'm suggesting that they make a two new tools. Both would be far more versatile than what magic mouth currently allows. One would be a conversation tool, which would give sackboy different response options and could easily be used to make a conversation tree. The second is a cutscene tool that allows you basically create scripted scenes without the limitations of the magic mouth. Both tools are fairly similar and could be used in conjunction with each other. cutscene tool (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=9144) interactivity switches (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=9133) | 2009-02-25 14:27:00 Author: dcf Posts: 468 |

dcf i like your idea of a conversation tool that lets player choose a response to a conversation (ala RPG style eh?) and your interactivity switches, i was just thinking of a way to make people turn their sackperson into a sad one in one part of my current project. having a proximity switch and change these sackboy emotions automaticaly is a pretty neat thing. lol, i had another idea regardiing the text bubble issue... and as soon as finished responding to dcf's suggestions, ive completely forgotten about it, how annoying. argh! | 2009-02-25 18:45:00 Author: graygoose Posts: 371 |
You should read this thread : https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=6932 Thanks for the link. I read through those the other day and I didn't use any of them. For a while I thought it was "pod" which was causing the censoring, but that's not it. dcf i like your idea of a conversation tool that lets player choose a response to a conversation (ala RPG style eh?) and your interactivity switches, i was just thinking of a way to make people turn their sackperson into a sad one in one part of my current project. having a proximity switch and change these sackboy emotions automaticaly is a pretty neat thing. lol, i had another idea regardiing the text bubble issue... and as soon as finished responding to dcf's suggestions, ive completely forgotten about it, how annoying. argh! The emotion proximity switch idea is actually just the opposite. The player changes the emotion and the proximity switch reads it. What you are suggesting is pretty neat as well. And yes, I think it would be extremely appropriate when a ps3 exclusive RPG comes out for media molecule to release a new level pack (not a rpg game, but a LBP take on the rpg, just like the MGS level pack was the LBP take on MGS) that in addition to some fun levels contains new tools, including new text options for levels with story. (Story or plot might be a good tag word they could add as well.) | 2009-02-25 19:11:00 Author: dcf Posts: 468 |
Thanks for the link. I read through those the other day and I didn't use any of them. For a while I thought it was "pod" which was causing the censoring, but that's not it. If you send me the content of your speech bubble by PM I can probably work out why it's being filtered. I've gotten to be kind of an expert with the censor system, I even have a level on my moon called LBP Dumb Censor Test which I use explicitly to figure out why a benign word is being censored. | 2009-02-25 19:38:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
okay.. while trying to regain that particular idea that i had in my thoughts which i forgotten. i suddenly encountered the issue (my issue) of not having enough voice effects in your conversations.... i would sure like to see a: commanding sergeant/captain of a ship a girl (princess) yearning for help unfortunately theres only 2 i can think of and im heading for work, but ill improve on this list later on. | 2009-02-25 20:35:00 Author: graygoose Posts: 371 |
What about that bit in (I think) the Canyons, and I'm sure loads of other levels, when an event happens when the magical mouth is closed. Ie, character leaves on closing the magic mouth. | 2009-02-25 21:26:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
i agree there needs to be more text space. UNLIMITED text space. i hate having to use a bunch of mouths to say something. i wish i had to use just one mouth. this would be helpful on story based levels or on dialog heavy levels. | 2009-02-26 00:04:00 Author: superBlast Posts: 267 |
Want to add my vote to this as YES in case MM gets to see this thread. | 2009-02-26 00:44:00 Author: mrjoeyman Posts: 217 |

Unfortunately, I deleted some of them, but I think I've still got a couple. I'll private message them to you next time I get a chance to look it up. | 2009-02-26 01:15:00 Author: dcf Posts: 468 |
ALRIGHT!!! I REMEMBER!!! (Caps LOL!!!) that idea i had so forgotten... then it suddenly came back while at work today. the idea would then be... arent you people just tired of pressing that x button so much that it frustrates sometimes just to get a single word out? its that cellphone keypad ISSUE... yes ive finally said it, we should have that feature that our XMB has a fully laid out digital keypad.... say aye captain!! if you agree.:arg::arg::arg: | 2009-02-26 06:44:00 Author: graygoose Posts: 371 |
so far here's what everybody in this thread had come up with longer text limit at least as long as by how much you can post in the comments section in a level. highlighted words/phrases in different colors a better looking mouth (? thats sort of maybe but ill add it) better censorship word recognition dcf's cut scene tool https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=9144 dcf's interactive switches https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=9133 emotion changer proximity switch conversation response choosing option (ala RPG style) +++ and the added voice effects (will be updated, and any suggestions is welcome to this) -commanding sergeant/captain of a ship -a girl (princess) yearning for help -(lost in space movie) Robot voice (KILL THE ROBINSONS!!) (also it doesnt have to be that particular phrase but something else that would make it a villain) | 2009-02-26 07:01:00 Author: graygoose Posts: 371 |
I tried using stickers on my mouth, but for some reason it wouldn't work. I don't know why. It really does annoy me though... I pretty much agree with everyone here. Magic Mouth needs MORE. | 2009-02-26 13:03:00 Author: Unknown User |

There's a new add-on from sony for the ps3 controller that has a full keyboard on it. I got it and it's excellent. It clips directly onto the controller and has really made my LBP text experience a lot better. | 2009-02-26 13:05:00 Author: dcf Posts: 468 |
I agree with everything said so far. Also, we need more voices (again). Perhaps we can tweak voices like we tweak sound objects, i.e. changing their pitch? | 2009-02-26 17:36:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |

Another option would be to have a voice and an expression. Right now, the only repeat voice we have is the king. Otherwise if you want angry and sad the voice is clearly two different individuals. It would be nice to have lots of different options with the same voice. | 2009-02-26 17:39:00 Author: dcf Posts: 468 |
^^ darn it, i forgot about that add on keypad for your controller, that would really help bigtime, no matter what game your playing, so thats out already huh? but still not everybody in LBP or anyone that owns a PS3 would be able to buy one, so that keypad in the XMB featured in LBP would still be great. | 2009-02-26 18:51:00 Author: graygoose Posts: 371 |

I definitely agree. The add on keypad is amazing though. It's easily one of the best peripheral devices I have ever used. It took me a little bit to get used to typing with my thumbs (I don't have a full keyboard on my phone) but once I did its been great. The thing basically has an on/off switch. While on, if it isn't used in a while it goes into standby. Hit any button and it quickly wakes up. When you are in the text screen you just start typing and the text appears exactly where it should. There's no extra interface or screens to navigate, etc. You can even rapidly transition back and forth between using the ps3 controller (for example using square to delete a character out of force of habit) and the add-on keypad. The thing fits perfectly over the ps3 controller. It doesn't block the usb recharge port. Also, it has a PS button that fits right over the controllers PS button, which mechanically activates both (I guess this is how it syncs up). It also doesn't interfere with hitting any of the ps3 buttons. The only time I take it off is to recharge (it also recharges by usb, no batteries) and when I tried (and failed) to get quickfire artiste. | 2009-02-26 19:02:00 Author: dcf Posts: 468 |
Out of curiosity, does anyone know off the top of their head what the current character limit is on the magic mouth tool? | 2009-02-27 16:29:00 Author: dcf Posts: 468 |
barely three lines is allowed... am not sure exactly how many characters is that tho. | 2009-02-27 18:31:00 Author: graygoose Posts: 371 |
Okay, I decided to count. The answer is a measly 96 characters. | 2009-02-27 21:14:00 Author: dcf Posts: 468 |
Up the limit to 1500 characters minimum. Also, for the robot voice you mentioned, Doctor Who's Dharlek is perfect "Exterminate...." | 2009-02-28 02:24:00 Author: dkjestrup Posts: 672 |
