So Top Down Games

Archive: 19 posts

So, I have never really been too into LBP despite my ancient status here. However, I want to at least try with LBP3.

A lot of you would know that I am very into ARR PEE GEEs, or rather RPGs, and would love to make one, particularly one of the stories that have been floating around in my head for eons. However, I also want to make a Zelda style top down game, which goes into my frequent pleas of "ARR PEE GEE".

So anyway, my point: How easy or hard is it, relatively, to make a top down action rpg of sorts in the LBP3 engine for a complete noob? Is it something that I, as a complete noob with no artistic skills, should forget about until I know more than the basics?

Yep pretty much this. I'd personally recommend you build a standard level (say platformer) at least once before you attempt stuff much more complicated that runs on self made logic.

It's easy if you want a basic functioning RPG, but then you add INVENTORY, and UPGRADES, and CURRENCY and the whole lot gets more complicated, but depending on your level of adeptness with creation, you can make it all happen very well, or if you aren't great at creation, it is still very possible to create a good functioning RPG2014-10-08 16:34:00

Hm, true. I guess I don't really have many skills at all anyway, lol. IDK, I just want to finally make my freaking RPG, but I balk at the sheer effort I'd need to go through to make it to the standards I would want to play ;-; Oh well I guess2014-10-08 17:09:00

That is definitely me.

The only problem is my inability to make things look pretty. That would put a damper on anything.

Also, I only want to make things that are too big for my own skill set and don't have the drive to make things smaller and... yeah. My self confidence isn't that much, I know. Oh well, that's me

Oi-oi mayt. A lot here suffer from the lack of aesthetic skills. It does put the damper on the levels they create, BUT, they get better through criticism and self discipline! It's not as if anyone here is expecting you to make the most amazing level ever. Not saying you can't, but you are showing that you are lacking in some categories of level-making, and we all understand and have been there at one point- even the most amazing creators weren't amazing when they first started. They had to fail and try, over and over again, to get where they are now.

Also. "I only want to make things that are too big for my own skill set" means you should either learn the skills yourself, or search for those who have those skills. If you decide to do neither, than that is a paradox in the sense of a perpetual psychological trap you put yourself into.

AND! Self confidence for a skill[s], in this case the things that make up level-making, shouldn't be high if you know those skills are not where you wish they were. When you are a level 1, and see a level 80 enemy, you know that you are not able to take that creature on. Instead, as a player/creator, you try and take out enemies/tasks around your level and gain experience from those 'battles'. Some even try for those higher level creatures, maybe 2-3 levels more, that they believe they can take on. They may die or lose, but they will either try again or realize they aren't at that level yet, so they gain more experience and level up by taking on enemies of their level.

You are a level 1. You will fear the higher levels. That is natural. But unless you start gaining experiences and learning from your mistakes, you will never be able to reach that level 80.

+ There's also the question as to why one would want to reach the level 80. But that is a discussion on one's own morals and reasons.

We all lack in some areas, I myself cannot make music or nice visuals for a KFC. And I love KFC, the nicest fast-food in the world. I've gotten slightly better with visuals as time has passed but when I find myself stuck I settle for a more simple style than I wanted.

Music is something I seem incomprehensive with. I'm just incapable and bound to the basics of placing a drum on a sequencer and having to settle for it. I mostly implement pre-set music into my levels to accommodate for my lacking of abilities.

Ask about for help or someone to give you some logic tutorials. I believe there are some on YouTube.

That quote was taken out of context by the way.

But! I didn't get into something and left a ti-bit at the bottom of my last post since it would have been a bit more to read. Plus, it felt unnecessary to go over since not everyone wants perfection in their levels and it wasn't the point. And anyone that starts saying "Perfection is impossible to reach- yata-yata-yata-" no need to go into that since perfection is not a goal, at least it never should be, and it's merely an idea.

Anywho. No one can do everything, everyone knows this (At least they should), and many try their best to be as good as they can be. But when you or anyone is lacking in an area, they either choose to improve in that category, or seek others' help, which I mentioned.

I am sure if you really wanted to make a good theme and music for KFC, you would try. Whether you succeed is questionable. The point at which someone decides to settle with something other than what they wanted means either they were too lazy, didn't have enough resources (Time, money, whatever), it didn't work well enough, or some sort of mixture or other wall.

And always remember. Just because you can't do something now, does not mean you never will.

Care to explain how it was taken out of context?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I was trying to... expand on some of what you wrote by giving some personal.... thoughts.

I reviewed what I wrote and some of it read pretty much as if I were saying I give up if I cannot do something. I admit that I am lazy, which likely contributes to me publishing 0.5 levels per year. But I will claim that I can't make music. I've tried, again and again and so on. But I can't.

And by stating I settle for something more simple I mean't what is in my ability for me to create that I feel satisfied with. Not, I'll leave it in the state it currently stands or just throw some blocks here and there.

I'm the exact same way as you. I'm trash. I couldn't understand the NOT gate out of all things. The best I've done was a fully working Sonic the Hedgehog bot back in 2012, and even then I've needed some help with it from friends. But I will admit I didn't really try, and I'm more of a player (heh) than a creator, even though I'm really creative. I just never had the motive to try and learn. But once I get LBP3 PS4, I'm gonna actually try and learn, and make my own amazing levels. You should too, If I can do it, you can. I'm trash.

Sorry mate. 'Slightly out of context' would be closer to what I meant. By slicing it from the rest, it makes it look as if that was all I said. With the part I added after that cut section, I was saying that despite the lack of knowledge, there are ways around it- or just learn it if you can.

Your statements seemed to convey that you shouldn't keep going for the gold; trying to be better at that thing one lacks at. And by using the slice of my statement, it is almost as if you're using what I said as a tag-along with what you said. Like you're using my words to convey, "I support what this guy is about to say!"

It's a thing people do in discussions/arguments/debates that urks me is all; when they slice a piece out of something someone says, and then convey a different point using what the other said. Ain't mad at yuh or anything. Just a tick of mine.

Hmm... This may clear some stuff up. "One should seek to impress themselves, rather than to simply go for something they feel comfortable with; go beyond your comfort zone and don't settle for 'OK'."

There's reason as to why I left 'does not mean you never will.' in the quote. I wasn't trying to discourage them. But I was stating about myself that even when I try to do new things and when it doesn't work I revert back to the simpler less developed version, thus I have to settle for a less-than-wanted style though I will still make it to the best of my abilities, not left at a point where because I cannot make it up to the standards I wanted that I just say 'satisfying enough'.

I find myself unable to finish levels because I can't make a suitable music sequence or some of the visuals don't look appealing enough. I use a lot of sticker panel to make objects look nice because it's the best material that I can use to make levels with. I usually make workarounds to complete levels.

You know you could spend an hour or two carefully writing your comments so people cannot take it out of context.

When I read my own posts I occasionally find typos and grammar mistakes like using a instead of an and opposite. Again I find it hard to justify the difference between its and it's. Even entire sentences don't make sense to even me and I use the wrong words in context. I know the difference between its and it's, I just can't figure out when something is its or it is (then the use of it's). It's why I've re-read this 2 times and spent about 15 minutes writing it up. Checking grammar and such. I don't even know why I wrote this paragraph to be honest but I've already done so, so I'll leave it in. Buffing up the textarea with some text!

See. That makes more sense. Although. I am curious as to what you actually tried to do where you told yourself 'It doesn't work'. I've personally never ran into an issue where it was "It doesn't work." More-so, I'd say "I don't know how to do this yet."

New things are tough, but they are new. Of course you won't know how to do them.

I do the music box thing as well. But that's because I rather like the music boxes and messing with the settings. Plus, music boxes have sounds you can't make with the music tools they give you.

That's not really my fault when someone snips out a section though. That's like if I nailed four nails into a block, someone took one out and poked themselves, then told me, "Eeeesh. You should really spend an hour or two to keep people from poking themselves with your nails."

I can help you there. It's is a contraction of it is or it has. A rule of thumb is if it is or it has works, then there you go. "The bear got its meal." It's doesn't work. "The bear got it is meal."

Its is possessive. "The bear has its food now." The food belongs to the bear.

Well, you can try to imagine first what your RPG (or ARR PEE GEE) will look like and how the gameplay will look like. Then you start making the characters for your RPG. If you know how to use logic, or at least the tools in LBP3, you'll learn quickly what logic you're gonna use and how to use it properly. Otherwise you can play other RPG's and ask the creator to show you how the logic for his level looks like. 2014-10-17 14:53:00
