Changing Ground Type

Archive: 8 posts

Hey guys,

I'm curious, as I've never been able to figure this one out. Does anyone know how to change the ground type without changing the background? I like the 'no theme' background (don't like all the big stuff off in the distance), but I also don't like the 'no theme' ground (too card-board-y). I'm not a fan of the 'painting' terrain, because they have that huge and obvious, ugly border, and they take too much thermo for something so little.

I would like the ground to be dirt or sand without having a giant fence or huts in the background.

I don't think there is a way round this if you have hills or valleys in your level as each panorama/background has it's own 'set' of terrain paint colours.

However, if you're working with a flat area then you can make the ground anything you like using a piece of material expanded to it's maximum size after creating it. It could also be done to save on thermo if you use the terrain paint to cover the hills for instance then use the material to cover the rest. Trees or other foilage/scenery can mask the joins. Just a thought!

That really is a shame if true. Seems like it would have been a really easy thing to have as an option.... I mean, wasn't it in ModNation?

I fairly sure because if you paint the terrain using the pallette 'set' you have for the 'no theme' background, then change that background in the global settings, all the colours change.

Hi StJimmysadiction,
I haven't played karting in a good while, but, I used to select a blank background theme, and make the ground out of resized material. That way, at least you can have different terrain types. Just have a set camera a little above the players so you don't accidently see into the ground material blocks.

I do similar things when I have flat ground (which seems to be most of my levels these days), but I was thinking about a level of islands, and wanted to have a nice sandy looking beach before transitioning to more inland terrain (made out of grass/dirt/rock materials). While I could make it out of materials, it would end up looking blocky and unnatural.

I'm thinking about simply making a ring out of 'sky' looking material and expanding it really really big to cover the background. Anyone done this? I haven't looked specifically for an appropriate material for this, any suggestions?

Idea! Take a picture of the sky. Stick it on a piece of material, I find the blue wood material is the smoothest for sticking to, then expand to correct size and place vertically at edge of playable area.

When you 'take pictures of the sky' and use it on a piece of 'wall', if you resize the wall you might have distortion issues.
Sticker itself will become a different color is spots (had that happen).
If you dont have distortion issues.
You could do it the long way, make your 'island sand>rock' out of whatever materials (changing the color of each: for sand/more yellowish...) make your ground the way you want it to look, then take pictures of it (top view prefered) then paste sticker 'object created island' onto the blank ground 'hills' (blank level). Like magic your island has sand without objects. On the borders of 'sticker' place other objects like rocks, trees, bushes. If you can make the 'sand look in 1 picture, just hide sticker edges under the water.
Hint for taking detailed pictures and reusing them with same details.
-The picture should match the same size (give or take a little) as what your putting it onto.
If you take a picture (lots of detail) and shrink/enlarge it then place on a 'wall', it has a high possibilty of distortion or not showning up.
There are ways around that too, just paste 'sticker' on 'wall' then shrink wall.

To sum up:
1. create island out of objects, and adjust colors.
2. take pictures of 'created island' (top view)
3. recreate 'island' from actual ground (lifting and lowering level base).
4. place (#2) 'created island' sticker onto (#3) 'recreated island'.

*creating and adjusting island in a different level will save on thermo.
