Filming noob.. youtube HQ?

Archive: 6 posts

Ok so I'm all happy and prancing around with my new camcorder thinking how glad I am that I can upload my own LBP videos, but there's one thing I can't figure out... and that's how to get HQ youtube videos.

Before anyone posts the obvious, let me say a few things first.

I already know that cameras that film in 720p or higher will automatically generate HQ feeds when uploaded. I bought a Kodak Zi6 pocketcam that did this, but returned it because the image quality was crap.

I exchanged it for a Samsung flash camcorder that records in standard 480p quality, at the benefit of MUCH better image quality despite its lower resolution. But, now all the youtube videos I upload aren't showing up as "watch in HQ".

Now, I could assume that simply means that 480p video can't be watched as high quality, except for the fact that 480p videos when watched off my hard drive look far better than even the HQ videos on youtube. In other words, the compression of 720p video through youtube's compression algorithm appears to drop the quality below that of true 480p video. So, I see no reason why 480p video couldn't be compressed to a lesser extent to offer the same HQ video.

On top of that, I find it hard to believe that everybody who uploads to youtube these days is outfitted with a HD camcorder; they're too new and expensive to be as common as the number of HQ vids available, which leads me to believe I'm missing something here...

So, what can I do to my 480p videos to get them to show up in high quality on youtube?

Sorry, I'm not knowledgeable about these things. But you can try a few videos in youtube that will teach you.

YouTube - How to make your YouTube video 720p HD widescreen (and keeping it that way!)

I'm not sure if that helps, but here's his description in the video:
" Want to have your video HD and widescreen? Make sure your output is 720p, i.e. 1280x720. You're also going to want to compress it so you aren't uploading a huge file - use h.264 at 1500-2500 kbps.

For more detailed instructions, click here: http://www.facerocker.com/2008/12/31/...

After you upload, be patient - YouTube needs time to process it before it throws up the "Watch in HD" link.

I use Final Cut Pro and a smattering of After Effects when necessary. Music/Sound is Logic. But remember! The program doesn't make your movie for you - if you've got the fundamentals down, you could use iMovie on an old iMac and still rock faces.

Stupid YouTube wanting to revert to 4:3 resolution. Sometimes you gotta use some FORCE. "

Ok, there seems to be some distinction between HQ videos on youtube and HD videos on youtube, as per this nifty link I found.

http://housegeekatheart.blogspot.com/2008/07/how-to-make-high-quality-youtube-video.html

Sorry, but the link you posted above 404'd me.

This sums it up perfectly: "Size: it must be 480x360 or above."

Which means, my regular old SD-quality videos should be displayable as high quality. Note, as of late, youtube is also supporting true HD video, and some of their 720p videos are stunning.

Anyways, I'll keep reading that link and see if I can demystify my problems.

Even by regular standards, 480p isn't "HD".

720p or more is considered "HD" and 1080p is considered "full HD".

If someone somewhere would sell or give me 480p as HD i'd be ******.

No, 480p is not HD. The issue at hand, was whether uploaded video had to be HD to be rendered as HQ.

The answer is NO. Youtube "high quality videos" need only be "360p" or better. However, just because you upload a 480p video does not mean it will be offered in high quality without some post-production work. It may be as simple as forcing the bitrate over 1000kbps and encoded using h.264.

I don't think I said anywhere that 480p was HD... the standard is 720p, as you indicated.

My camera is already recording h.264, so I'll have to check the bitrate settings.
