How do you test a multiplayer game by yourself?

Archive: 9 posts

I have an idea for LBP3 but I've never made a multiplayer game before. I personally don't like multiplayer games and I also dislike having the dirty feet of other sack folk trampling all over my nice clean floor ... so, how do you create a multiplayer game by yourself? It's a four player co-op game (I'm not saying what it is!). Working title 'Zoiks!'. Four spaceships/things/not decided yet, floating around a single screen (2v2) until DEATH. There's more to it than that but like I said, I want to keep this close to my chest because I think I have a pretty addictive (NOT 'addicting' < Drives me nuts) idea, I'm slow to create ... and I DON'T TRUST PEOPLE!2014-10-03 12:43:00

Well, make it all work by yourself, then keep retesting it with random people (or just create buddies) until you manage to have a working level

sadly if you want to make a multiplayer by yourself, I don't see some other way to do it without some playtesting (at least I don't see any other way to do it besides releasing it unfinished and seeing the public writhe in anger in the comments then using that to fix your level) so I would just occasionally invite people to play test, and fix bugs after testing, by yourself

The trouble is I'd need four players at all times to test it out and help adjust the settings. The nature of the game is totally dependant on getting a 'certain' balance right. If I get it right people will have lots of fun. If I get it wrong, people will just give up. A simple one screen section could conceivably last anywhere between 5 minutes to 5 hours. It turns the genre on its head and has a risk/reward system. This is why it's going to be extremely difficult to balance without 4 people available at all times.

Surely you have three friends on this site you trust. I can't think of a way to test four player game play without four players.2014-10-03 16:53:00

You can build a AI system to play when not all player slots are filled. Take some logic but results in more groups being able to play with less players.

I'm sure I'll find a way. First I have to get my UFO (or whatever I decide it will be) flying first. I've never made a game like that before and I have a specific way I see it flying. I need it to slow down to a halt as opposed to just stop, and I want it to move slightly when stationary, maybe in a figure of eight? I don't know.

Me ... build an AI system? Me?

Not too good with logic huh? I could help you build one or just join you and test the level with two other happy sackboys! Here to offer my helping hand, light a white knight is stitched cotton. Or what material Sackboy is made from.

Thanks, I might just take you up on that! I'm going to wait for LBP3 to come out first but I'm just working on my craft logic at the moment. I can use the broadcast logic instead of having logic on each craft I'm assuming?

I believe so. I don't know much about the new logic within LBP3.
