Mirror & Grappling hook

Archive: 6 posts

Hi guys.
I have recently published a new 2 player only level for the MM contest that Wexfordian posted about earlier. It includes a Grappling hook and a working mirrorpart way through which I'd like you to take a look at and see what you think. It isn't a perfect mirror of course as it doesn't show the reverse view, i.e. when you stand in front of it facing forwards it shows your reflection the same way rather than the view of your back, but until MM give us some true mirror material that's the best I can come up with. Having said that I think it works kinda ok but then i would say that wouldn't I.

I would appreciate some honest feedback on the entire level itself aswell please. The first tag I received after publishing said rubbish. That is very harsh and was probably left by someone who didn't read the description and title properly and tried to play alone but not very nice to see when you've put a lot of effort into the level. It is shorter than I intended but I ran out of time and had to publish before the deadline so the thermo is only half full and lots of things I wanted to put in I just didn't have time for. It took me over 60 hours as it is anyway.I had the most trouble with a simple elevator which i originally wanted to whisk you up automatically and then disappear and emit a floor under you but i just couldn't get it to work. The switches and emitters worked fine sometimes and then for some reason which is a bug since the edam update they just stopped working. I changed them all several times with the same result, sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. I've even had several emitters throughout the level emitting stuff at random even though they have a grab switch attached ( really annoying as you can't do a thing about it ). I ended up scrapping that idea after spending 2 days on it and just having a normal elevator to get it finished in time

Anyway guys the level is called : LBPF:Be My Valentine ( Let's have a Sweet Affair)2 Player
Please give it a go and let me know your thoughts. Thanks everyone.

Wow, this sounds very interesting. I'm going to have to check this out. I'm very intrigued as to how you implemented the working mirror and the grappling hook for that matter. I'll try get the missus to sit down with me for a bit tonight and check it out.2009-02-24 11:47:00

Have you had chance to try out my level yet mate ? I played your PINBALL WIZARD tonight but strangely it was showing up in the new releases with no plays at all. I thought it was great. I could never devise anything like that, very clever stuff. How do you make the player appear as the ball ? I got a score of around 570000 but it failed to upload. Mind you that's justice I suppose because I inadvertently 'cheated' it. At the top left there are ( I think ) 3 round bumpers and a heart shape or something like that and I landed on top of the round one next to the heart and just kept collecting points. I tried to move but couldn't so in the end I had to hit try again which of course took me to the scoreboard. Just wondered if you had encountered this before ?2009-02-28 03:03:00

Hi there, well I have to thank you for reminding me about your level, to be honest I had forgot as when I got home that day my fiancee had to work late and we never got around to playing it.

Had you not reminded me we may not have got around to playing this fantastic level!

You have really made a level that not only incorporates some ingenious 2 player puzzles but the writing is fun, light hearted and suits the theme perfectly.

Each puzzle has an emphasise on how you interact with your partner which is great. The difficulty level is perfect which is a really hard thing to achieve. You realised that this is not a level for the hardcore gamer but one that couples can enjoy and have fun with so the difficulty is not in the "can I time this perfectly or can i make that jump" its more about "OK so how do we get out of this room, ok you do this and I'll do that" Basically the fun is from figuring out the puzzles together and not being the best aim or the fastest reflexes.

On the visual side I thought could use a little polish but the gameplay more than made up for this.

This is a definite play if you want to introduce your girlfriend/boyfriend to LBP.
I'd suggest anyone with a second player go play this now, you don't have to be a couple to enjoy the puzzles involved, although it does make for a lot of fun if it is your partner!

I'd suggest you add some pics to this thread and give a little more detail about the level as this is a seriously underplayed and underrated level!

I'll finish this post by quoting what my beautiful fiancee said straight after playing........

"5 Stars! 5 Stars!......... and a heart!".... what the lady wants, the lady gets

Thanks very much for that Wexfordian. I'm glad you liked it. As you say the emphasis I was trying to achieve was for couples to work out the solution and work together so i'm glad it came across that way. I agree it could have done with a bit more polish but I ended up rushing it to get it published for the contest deadline. I'll have to add some more to it later but i have 2 more levels in production at the moment which will take a while. I would like to add some pictures as you say on this thread but I don't know how. I still haven't figured out how to make a sig. I tried altering some photos on the PC in paint but it wouldn't let me make them small enough. I set the pixel size to 100 x100 but it didn't do the part of the picture I wanted , it did the top left corner which was just sky !! As you can see i'm not very up on PC stuff. Thanks for the feedback anyway.2009-03-05 14:17:00
